2. INTRODUCTION
• Childhood obesity and overweight are increasing in prevalence and a
growing health concern.
• Majority of obesity in adulthood has its origin in childhood which makes
obesity a paediatric concern and it is the period when interventions should be
done.
• Environmental factors, lifestyle preference and cultural environment play a
role in the rising prevalence of childhood obesity.
3. JUSTIFICATION
• Childhood obesity is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in
adult life and several adverse consequences in childhood like insulin
resistance, dyslipidemia, pulmonary, orthopedic and psychological
problems.
• Preventive strategies and promotive measures to reduce the burden of
obesity must be insisted.
• School based lifestyle and behavioural change measures, health education of
parents and increased physical activity must be encouraged and promoted.
4. OBJECTIVES
• To study the socio-demographic profile of overweight and obese school
children of age group 5-12 years in schools of Chidambaram town.
• To study the associated risk factors of childhood overweight and obesity.
• To analyse the prevention strategies.
5. METHODOLOGY
• STUDY DESIGN - Cross sectional study design
• PERIOD OF STUDY - April 2023 to April 2024
• STUDY CENTRE - Schools of Chidambaram town
• STUDY POPULATION - School children of age group 5-12 years
• SAMPLE SIZE : Prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity was found to be 13.8 % in
a study conducted by Dr. Dhole Subhash Shahaji, Mundada V. D, 2013, The Study Of Prevalance
Of Childhood Obesity And Associated Risk Factors In School Going Children Of Aurangabad
Munciple Corporation Area, INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING RESEARCH &
TECHNOLOGY (IJERT) Volume 02, Issue 08 (August 2013) and using the formula n = Z
^2pq/d^2, the sample size is calculated to be 174.
6. • SELECTION OF SCHOOL :
The list of schools and number of students are obtained from the Block education
office, chidambaram. First, the schools were stratified into government, private aided
and private schools. For each stratified group, schools were selected using simple
random sampling.
• SELECTION OF SUBJECTS :
List of children roll number wise prepared from the selected school. From the list
of children by systematic random sampling method, we selected 10 % children. First
we selected 10th roll number and then every 10th roll number children was included in
the study. Those children who were absent on the day of survey were not included.
7. • INCLUSION CRITERIA:
All school children of age group 5-12 years of both sexes in Chidambaram
town are included All school children of age group < 5 years.
• EXCLUSION CRITERIA:
All school children of age group > 12 years.
Syndromic obesity like Prader willi syndrome.
Endocrinal disorders like hypothyroidism, hypopituitarism, cushing’s are
excluded.

9. INFORMED CONSENT
Dr.O.S.Hajeena, Post graduate student, Department of Paediatrics,
Government Medical College and Hospital, Cuddalore District is conducting
a study on ‘’socio-demographic profile and risk factors of overweight and
obese school children of age group 5-12 years in Chidambaram town and
its preventive strategies“. I hereby give my consent for my child to
participate in the study. The data obtained herein may be used for research
and publication.
10. STUDY PROCEDURE
Informed written consent from the parents and teachers from the concerned
school obtained
A predesigned, semi structured questionnaire are given to each pupil
Information on socio-demographic profile, anthropometric measurements are
collected and recorded
Height and weight measured and BMI calculated
BMI is plotted in CDC BMI for age growth chart (either for girls or boys)
Statistical analysis done using SPSS software
11. EXPECTED OUTCOME
• Risk factors associated with overweight and obesity in school children will
be analysed in detail with the results of the study.
• There are numerous factors that contribute to childhood obesity, some of
which are more important than others.
• Preventing obesity or overweight is more successful with a community-
based, school-based combined nutrition and physical activity strategy.
• Children's home-based instruction in nutrition, exercise, and good eating
will eventually translate to other facets of their lives.
