Video game culture final
1. Video Games VS Mainstream Media
Video Game Culture is a new media subculture that has been influenced by video and computer
games. As these games have increased greatly in popularity they have had a huge influence over
popular culture. The video game culture has evolved over time and these days the impact of these
games can be seen in politics, TV, music and films. (Slide 1)
There has been a lot of debate among media theorists over whether or not gaming is a social or anti-
social activity. Terry flew (who is a professor of media and communications in the creative industries
faculty at QUT) argues that digital gamers are “increasingly social”, a point that goes against the
mainstream medias portrayal of players as isolated, usually adolescent boys hidden away in
darkened bedrooms, failing to engage with the social world. He pushes that games these days are
being played in very social, public places and often in domestic gatherings. A good example is that
computers and game consoles are being played in living areas of homes, where everybody can
participate. A popular occasion for this to be accomplished is a LAN (local area network) party, which
can be hosted at a home involving friends or family or held on a larger scale as an event held in
public places and are attended by a huge amount of people who don’t normally socialise. (Slide 2)
People have been blaming video games for real- world violence ever since the very first pixelated
gun appeared on a screen. You would think that after all this time that everyone would get past that
but due to social media and its obsession with the violence of games it has spawned a whole new
era of game blaming. The biggest and most outrageous connection between a real-world act of
violence and video game violence happened in 2012. It was the horrific mass shooting at the Sandy
Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, with the shooter being a man named Adam
Lanza. After the shooting it was Adams Brother, Ryan, who was blamed due to his id being on Adams
body when it was found, but even though the media eventually realised their mistake it was too late
for social media who essentially turned into a virtual lynch mob calling for poor Ryan’s head. The
internet not only ruined the life of an innocent man but after digging through his Facebook profile
they found that he had “liked” Mass effect, a game they were sure had guns in it. They didn’t care
that said game had laser guns that were aimed at aliens while based in outer space or that everyone
clicks “like” on a whole number of things. Due to this being an angry mob they were out for blood
and diverted the blame from the shooter to Mass Effects Facebook page where it was overrun with a
crazy number of angry and threatening messages that repeatedly accused its creators of aiding and
abetting a child murderer. (Slide 3)
During a news story about another shooting involving a man who played video games, Fox News
(after mentioning other mass killers who played video games) used quotes from Bruce Bartholow,
(an associate professor of psychology at the University of Missouri), who said “From a psychological
perspective, video games are excellent teaching tools because they reward players for engaging in
certain types of behaviour. Unfortunately, in many popular video games these behaviours are
violence”. This is all good and all but rewarding players does not automatically mean the player will
then do said behaviour in the real-world. If I climb a tower in assassins creed without falling doesn’t
mean I’ll go out and attempt to climb a tower or if I win in a fighting game against an opponent that
2. is bigger than me doesn’t mean I will go out and initiate a fight with someone. But even though
video games do reward players for doing violent things it is also within parents and teachers abilities
to reward these players for their good behaviour and these figure heads are also better teaching
tools then video games. Using video games as a scapegoat for poor parenting combined with some
country’s growing lack of mental health care is not fair for the whole video game industry. (Slide 3)
Even though aspects of the video game culture is becoming more accepted by mainstream culture
there is still the discrimination that at some point gamers of violent games will go on a killing spree,
or the assumptions that all gamers are anti-social little boys. This is all crap and until the mainstream
can get over these facts then the video game culture can never be accepted or respected fully.
