1. Name: Hanelen V. Dada Professor: Doc. Reynaldo Caturza
Course: ELT 4007- Expository Writing
Instruction: Write a short essay to differentiate "Weathered Moss" from "The Hazards
of Moviegoing" in terms of: 1. content, 2. style, 3. organization, and 4. purpose.
Hazards of Moviegoing and Weathered Moss are two different texts that make
sense in the field of writing. The former is an exposition and the latter is a memoir that
considers creative nonfiction or literary essay. Based on the given texts, we can easily
spot the differences of the two, especially in terms of content, style, organization and
purpose being used. In Hazards of Moviegoing, the contents presented are based on
factual events, situations and circumstances that the main character has been
experienced when he was on the theatre. He was able to describe the scenarios in
detailed and present difficulties starting on his way to the theatre until he went home from
such event.
In addition, the author presented a narrative style and systematic flow of events on
his write ups. It is evidently stated from the introduction until the conclusion the organized
pattern of the scenarios. It was narrated clearly on the essay the purpose of narrating,
describing and informing to the general audience the drawbacks of movie going. This
exposition is designed to communicate the readers to understand the differences in
getting to the theatre or not as per experience of the main character on the essay. It tends
to inform the hassle and obstacle that everyone may encounter in moviegoing or as a
moviegoer. The solely purpose of this text is to open the minds of the readers to
understand the core of the Hazards of Moviegoing because sometimes, readers donโt
have prior knowledge or understanding of the topic and probably writers cannot assume
that all readers have already an idea about the topic. Itโs one way of informing them the
main lesson of the topic by narrating it clearly and thoroughly.
However, Weathered Moss is not an ordinary essay. We tend to think and imagine
a lot of thoughts while reading because of its imaginative content. It has full of literacy
devices and symbols embedded on the text and required us deeper and creative
understanding. Since it is a memoir (creative nonfiction), its style and organization of
writing is being artistic. It is manifestly stated how the character conveyed his childhood
stories creatively where the readers have to keep their full interest and attention in reading
from the very beginning until the end. We could perceive that the whole text entertained
the readers by telling the character his childhood past including childhood games,
religious rituals, myths/heroes, songs, poetry, cultural beliefs and practices. He even
included storytelling and tales with fictional devices on the text such as; โWhen Garcia
died, Coke bottle of story existed about the tales of the big butterfly or kaba-kaba that
2. came out of his belly when he was embalmed and that was the source of his amulet or
anting-anting, which would explain why he could hide himself in a Coke bottle and could
sit on top of a tree to write his poetry in his younger daysโ. (From the piece of text,
Weathered Moss). This essay is fascinating to the point that readers did not understand
the text on its literal level instead they used their creative minds in comprehending the
text completely.
To top it all, Weathered Moss captivated the readerโs mind about its moral values
that the text has been presented. Through this, the character wanted to share and create
a remarkable memories that restores the past, turning Bohol an extraordinary and
enchanting place where lot of inspiring stories are still existing.
