Quantitative Policies at 36 of Clark
University’s peer institutions
This document describes the policies concerning quantitative education at 36 universities in the
Liberal Arts Career Network. The number of students in each university is around 2000, meaning
similar in size to Clark University. Haley Smith (hasmith@clarku.edu) compiled the information
during January 2015 at the request of Dean Mary-Ellen Boyle and Professor Gil Pontius. Smith
wrote most of this document, which Pontius subsequently edited. Smith also compiled a
spreadsheet that shows information for the 36 universities concerning 7 variables plus contact
information for the relevant person at the university. Among the 7 variables, 5 take on the
possible values of: Yes, No, Not Applicable. These five variables relate to the following 5
questions:
1. Does this University have a mathematics entrance or placement exam that is taken prior to
registration?
2. Are all students required to take the mathematics placement exam prior to registration?
3. Does this University have quantitative requirement(s)?
4. Does this University have a university-wide, intro to statistics course in place?
5. Are all students required to take a statistics course?
A summary of the results shows that:
Sixty one percent of our peer institutions have a university-wide placement exam for quantitative
skills. However, among institutions that have a placement exam, only 41% of those institutions
require all students to take the exam. Student are required to take the exam usually only if they
plan to take quantitative courses and/or do not have other forms of evidence concerning
quantitative skills, such as a SAT math score. Clark has a formal analysis requirement that is not
necessarily quantitative, while 94% of our peer institutions have some sort of quantitative course
requirement that can be fulfilled by a variety of courses in Math or Sciences. Ninety-Four
percent of our peer institutions have university-wide statistics course, however none of those
universities require students to take the course. The university-wide statistics course is usually
offered in the Math department. Other universities typically offer additional statistics courses at
the departmental level, while those departmental statistics courses do not require the university
level statistics course as a prerequisite.

ANALYSIS BY HALEY SMITH
Placement Exam
 Of the 36 schools in the Liberal Arts Career Network, 22 of them have a mathematics
placement exam (Chart A). However, of those 22 school that have a placement exam,
only 9 of them require all students to take the exam (Chart B). The other 13 schools only
require some students to take the exam – usually if they are planning on taking a
mathematics course in their first semester, or are planning on majoring in mathematics.
Chart A Chart B
Quantitative Requirements
 Of the 36 schools in the Liberal Arts Career Network, 34 schools require students to
fulfill a Quantitative requirement. Only two schools (Amherst College and Grinnell
College) do not require students to fulfill such a requirement. Among the schools with a
Quantitative requirement, courses in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science
almost always fulfilled this requirement. Many of these schools have courses in a variety
of subjects that fulfill the requirement – in other words, students do not necessarily have
to take a mathematics course in order to fulfill the requirement.
Statistics Courses
 Of the 36 schools in the Liberal Arts Career Network, 34 schools have a university-wide
statistics course, meaning that they offer a statistics course that is not affiliated with a
department other than mathematics or statistics, and is an introductory level course.
However, none of the 36 schools in the Liberal Arts Career Network require all students
to take those university-wide statistics courses. Students were only required to take a

statistics course if their majors required it. The majority of the time, if a major required a
statistics course, it was a departmental statistics course, such as Biostats, Econ Statistics,
or Stats for Psych; none of these departmental statistics courses required students to have
previously taken the university-wide statistics course.

  • 1. Quantitative Policies at 36 of Clark University’s peer institutions This document describes the policies concerning quantitative education at 36 universities in the Liberal Arts Career Network. The number of students in each university is around 2000, meaning similar in size to Clark University. Haley Smith (hasmith@clarku.edu) compiled the information during January 2015 at the request of Dean Mary-Ellen Boyle and Professor Gil Pontius. Smith wrote most of this document, which Pontius subsequently edited. Smith also compiled a spreadsheet that shows information for the 36 universities concerning 7 variables plus contact information for the relevant person at the university. Among the 7 variables, 5 take on the possible values of: Yes, No, Not Applicable. These five variables relate to the following 5 questions: 1. Does this University have a mathematics entrance or placement exam that is taken prior to registration? 2. Are all students required to take the mathematics placement exam prior to registration? 3. Does this University have quantitative requirement(s)? 4. Does this University have a university-wide, intro to statistics course in place? 5. Are all students required to take a statistics course? A summary of the results shows that: Sixty one percent of our peer institutions have a university-wide placement exam for quantitative skills. However, among institutions that have a placement exam, only 41% of those institutions require all students to take the exam. Student are required to take the exam usually only if they plan to take quantitative courses and/or do not have other forms of evidence concerning quantitative skills, such as a SAT math score. Clark has a formal analysis requirement that is not necessarily quantitative, while 94% of our peer institutions have some sort of quantitative course requirement that can be fulfilled by a variety of courses in Math or Sciences. Ninety-Four percent of our peer institutions have university-wide statistics course, however none of those universities require students to take the course. The university-wide statistics course is usually offered in the Math department. Other universities typically offer additional statistics courses at the departmental level, while those departmental statistics courses do not require the university level statistics course as a prerequisite.
  • 2. 1 ANALYSIS BY HALEY SMITH Placement Exam  Of the 36 schools in the Liberal Arts Career Network, 22 of them have a mathematics placement exam (Chart A). However, of those 22 school that have a placement exam, only 9 of them require all students to take the exam (Chart B). The other 13 schools only require some students to take the exam – usually if they are planning on taking a mathematics course in their first semester, or are planning on majoring in mathematics. Chart A Chart B Quantitative Requirements  Of the 36 schools in the Liberal Arts Career Network, 34 schools require students to fulfill a Quantitative requirement. Only two schools (Amherst College and Grinnell College) do not require students to fulfill such a requirement. Among the schools with a Quantitative requirement, courses in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science almost always fulfilled this requirement. Many of these schools have courses in a variety of subjects that fulfill the requirement – in other words, students do not necessarily have to take a mathematics course in order to fulfill the requirement. Statistics Courses  Of the 36 schools in the Liberal Arts Career Network, 34 schools have a university-wide statistics course, meaning that they offer a statistics course that is not affiliated with a department other than mathematics or statistics, and is an introductory level course. However, none of the 36 schools in the Liberal Arts Career Network require all students to take those university-wide statistics courses. Students were only required to take a 14 22 MathematicsPlacement Exam No Yes 9 13 14 MathematicsPlacement ExamREQUIREDbyAll Students Yes No N/A
  • 3. 2 statistics course if their majors required it.
