THE WOODLANDS, Texas - Graduating from
The Woodlands High School in 2012, and
following his baseball dream to Rice University,
Kevin McCanna, pitcher, was picked in the 13th
round of the draft to the Houston Astros.
McCanna has lived in The Woodlands since he
was two years old, and began playing baseball
when he was four. When asked, McCanna said
growing up and playing baseball with his best
friends from age four until high school was his
favorite memory of baseball as a kid. His hitting
coach, Vinny Sinisi, and his father have been
the most influential people throughout his
baseball career.
“I knew I always wanted to be a baseball player,” McCanna said.
As a player at Rice University for the past three years, McCanna has also focused on his studies as a
Kinesiology major. Throughout his time playing with Rice, his favorite memory is beating the University of
Houston after 20 innings in this year’s regional.
In addition to baseball at Rice, McCanna has spent two summers playing in the Cape Cod League with the
Falmouth Commodores, where he was awarded the 2014 Cape Cod All-League Team.
“I look forward to learning as much as I can from my coaches and teammates to make myself a better
baseball player and ultimately one day play for the Houston Astros,” McCanna said when asked what he
was most excited about with this MLB team.
As advice to anyone aspiring to play college or professional sports, McCanna says: “do everything you
possibly can to make yourself the best player you can be. Also enjoy the time you have with your teammates
and coaches, because before you know it, your high school or college career is over and you’re moving onto
the next stage of your career or life.”
