Experimental probability is the probability that is obtained from an
experiment.
EXAMPLE:
Flip the coin 25 times and Note down whether it is head or tail.
Ratio ‘frequency of appearance towards number of flips’ that is
obtained from flipping the coin is the experimental probability for an
event
Experiment is a
procedure to observe
possible outcome
The outcome is the
possible result of an
experiment.
3
When a fair dice is thrown, the number that is shown is either
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Although the number shown is repeated, it is
still in the range of 1 to 6.
The outcome list for the thrown fair dice consists of numbers
1,2,3,4,5,6.
The sample space for the thrown fair dice is S =
{1,2,3,4,5,6}.
Sample space is all the
possible outcomes of an
experiment.
4
Using a tree diagram to denote outcomes.
The possible outcomes of the activity is known as sample
space, S = {(2,3), (2,5), (2,7)}
5
The number of elements in the sample
space, n(S) = 8
6
7
sample space, S = {(P,R), (P,G), (P,B), (P,Y)}
n(S) = 4
8
Solution:
Sample space , S = {1, 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9}
(i) May occur
(ii) May not occur
(iii) May occur

Questions
Halimah puts a black pen (R), a green pen (G), and two blue pens (B) into
a bag. She chooses two pens randomly one by one from the bag without
replacement. Write the sample space. State the number of sample space
“
12
A coin is flipped two times consecutively. The tree
diagram below shows the possible end result.
Complete the tree diagram below, then state the
number of sample space
13
14
A marble is picked at random from box Y and a marble is picked at
random from box Z. List the sample space, then state the number of
sample space.
