- 1. Word Classes – What are Adjectives?
Notes for Parents:
• Children need to know that an adjective can describe a noun
• Adjectives are words that are used to give more information about a noun. The words can describe many things
including colour, size and texture.
• Children should also be introduced to the term expanded noun phrase to refer to a noun which has been modified by
one or more adjectives. Please note that other types of words can be used in an expanded noun phrase but this step
focuses mainly on using adjectives.
Later in the week, we will be using these adjectives in our extended writing.
Task: Children are to work through the different activities. The answers are on the following pages in red.
Year 3 Challenges: Children are to complete the activities but use these to demonstrate your knowledge of adjectives into
expanded noun phrases. Please remember the comma that separates the adjectives.
Fun Challenge for ALL: Create your own tongue twister.
Think of a vegetable, then think of a 2 adjectives to describe the vegetable that start with the same letter as the vegetable
