2. 1.1 INTRODUCTION
The Philippines is the last country in Asia and one of
the only 3 countries (with Angola and Djibouti) in the
world with 10-year pre-university program.
K12 program in education are products of years of
research , planning, and consultation that take into
account the child, community, content, competencies,
culture, career and choice. The learners are at the
heart of K12 curriculum. It recognizes the needs, and
values of learners personal choices.

5. WHY THE NAME K TO 12
CURRICULUM?
Is an educational system under Department of
Education that aims to enhance learners’ basic
skills, produce more competent citizens, and
prepare graduates for lifelong learning and
employment.
Mandatory Kindergarten + 6 years
elementary + 4 years junior high school
+ 2 years Senior high school . = K-12

6. R.A No. 10533 “ENHANCED BASIC
EDUCATION CURRICULUM”
President Benigno Simeon Aquino III signs R.A.
No. 10533 , also known as the “Enhanced Basic
Education Act of 2013 into law on May 15, 2013,
An act enhancing the Philippine basic Education
system by strengthening its curriculum and
increasing the number of years for basic
education, realizing the vision “to establish a
system of education that truly imbues our youth
with the skills they need to pursue their dreams.

competencies by decongesting the
curriculum.

basic education base on international
standards for graduates.

3. To ensure that every Grade 12 graduate
is work ready and college ready.
4. To respond to a recommendation of
educational researches to expand the
years of basic education which is long

pre-requisite for
admission to
Grade 1.
• Kindergarten ( a
strong foundation for

optional and not a
pre-requisite for
admission to Grade 1.

chance to choose
among three tracks:
Academic, Technical-
Vocational Livelihood,
Sports and Arts &
Designs and undergo
immersion, which
provides relevant
exposure & actual
experience in their
chosen track.
• Old system offers a
broad curriculum that
does not include
enough practical
applications.
