1. Spike Jonze
Spike Jonze is a music video
director with his own unique
style of videos. He works with
large budgets as he is also a film
director and he often uses the
cinematic scenes in his music
videos to create a very
professional effect. He is
possibly the most famous video
music director ever. He has
worked with artists from Fatboy
Slim to Kanye West.
2. The Pharcyde - Drop
One of the more popular music videos Spike Jonze directed was “Drop” by The
Pharcyde. This music video contains what appears to be the four groups members
walking down alleyways and dancing towards the camera when actually the
whole music video is being played in reverse and they are actually moving away
from the camera. This allowed Spike to create an almost zero gravity effect as in
one part of the video the members of the group jump onto a van which is
impossible, however due to it being played in reverse all that was filmed was
them jumping off of the van.
3. The Beastie Boys - Sabotage
Another famous example of a music video directed by Spike Jonze would be
“Sabotage” by The Beastie Boys. In this music video Spike went for a comedy
feel to it by creating 3 police characters who have fake moustaches and wigs
who have a rather extreme way of fighting crime with their aggressive and
comical police chases. This music video has movie references from old police
movies such as police academy. It uses the freeze-frame effect when showing
the characters names which is also common with police films from the 70’s.
