Technology Transfer and Innovation
What is it about?
Movement of an idea, practice, object, tacit knowledge,
know-how, technical knowledge, intellectual property,
discovery or invention resulting from research conducted at
universities into a non-academic environment where it can
lead to social and commercial benefits at local, regional,
national or global levels. Transfer of knowledge is integrated
as highly important aspect.

Continuing Education
What is it about?

an academical degree or those persons having a higher
education entrance qualification or artistic ability and
professional experiences.

Social engagement
What is it about?
Voluntariness! Partnership of university knowledge and
resources with those of the public and private sectors. A
way of coding for the idea, deeply embedded in the notion
of a social purpose for universities, of two-way processes,
of dialogue, of co-creation and mutual learning.

Transdimensional aspects
What is it about?
Aspects which could not become allocated clearly to one of
the three dimensions. These aspects lie across at least two
of the other dimensions.

How do the universities perform?
The example „Coverage of TTI“
TTI is covered well in the official documents: 30 concepts were
mentioned in total
Every university could indicate activities out of the dimension
Apart from the universities of music and arts all universities cover
about 50 percent of all concepts
37th Annual EAIR Forum Krems 2015
Activity
30% of the universities are very active in dimension
50% refer to a good activity level in dimension
20% perform only in few activities and have their strengths in other
dimensions

Are there different types of universities?
37th Annual EAIR Forum Krems 2015
No differences between University Types with regard to TTI
Differences in dimension TTI are only at the level of single activities,
not at the level of the university types
Two groups of Universities with regard to Continuing education
There are two groups: One with already existing strong characteristics
in social engagement, another one with a focus on development
potential. Women’s advancement very strong at universities of music
and arts.
Social engagement everywhere
For one group continuing education is most important. The other group
does not focus on continuing education, but they are also offering at
least some activities.

Solutions to improve Third Mission
37th Annual EAIR Forum Krems 2015
Changes in the performance agreements
University-business cooperation should be strengthened
Inclusion of LLL in the stragey of the whole university not only in few chapters
Awarness of social responsibility
Become aware of performances
What does the university do in the four dimensions?
How successful is the university already each dimension?
Does the university already tap its full potential in each dimension?
Are the dimensions already interconnected to each other?
Strategy of university
Embedding of Third Mission in strategy of the whole university
