Overwhelming Support For Grenada U17 Women’s Team
Thursday 10th
March, 2016-St. George’s-
“We have exited but will be back soon. Our journey continues.” GFA President
Cheney Joseph was asserting his confidence in the talent and passion he saw
exhibited by Grenada’s U17 women’s team and his desire to keep the squad
together.
Team Grenada did not make it past the group stage after losses to Haiti (13-0),
Canada (7-0) and Guatemala (7-0) respectively.
However, the support for the team’s effort has been overwhelming. Citizens and
well wishers have taken to radio and social media sending messages of
congratulations and hope for the future of the team.
Local attorney Claudette Joseph wrote on Facebook, “Incremental strides on the
road to greatness. A few years ago, women’s football was virtually nonexistent.
Got to start somewhere.Congrats to our girls.”
Barry Close of Edmonton Canada remarked that the “the future is bright” while
another well wisher posted, “Congratulations on a job well done!! Continue on this
path.”
Portuguese Coach Vitor Salvado witnessed the team’s performance and was
excited about the future. “The road is long, but victory is certain. Enter the game,
get involved. If you were perfect, you would not be on this journey.”
Kim Fullerton, the father of the youngest player on the team, Melania Fullerton, is
already looking at ways to assist with the Spice Princesses development.
“I think the future for women’s soccer in Grenada is in good hands. I have already
made contact with a few teams in Dallas to do a possible summer tour in Grenada.
Also, we want to sponsor a team in the Grenville area if and when a woman's
league is created.” He said.
The Grenada Football Association is already planning a development programme
which will seek to further develop the team and increase their skill and tactical
ability. This will be done through a number of partnerships with the business
community and the Ministry of Sports.
