The GFA 2016 Premier League is set to resume on Sunday 10th
July, 2016. The
decision was taken at an Extraordinary General Council Meeting on Thursday 7th
July, 2016. The GFA Executive and affiliates spent the evening discussing and
coming to agreement on a number of issues related to the format of the Premier
League and the 2016 Competition Regulations.
Among the agreements are two (2) automatic demotions (9th and 10th
place) from
the Premier League into the Conference League and two playoffs. 7th
place in the
Premier League will enter a home and away playoff with the 4th
place team in the
Conference League. At the same time, the 8th
place team in the Premier League will
enter a home and away playoff with the 3rd
place team in the Conference League.
Another change to note is that 8 teams will now enter the Conference League
quarterfinals instead of four (4).
In the top flight league, at the end of two (2) rounds of competition, teams placing
1st
to 6th
based on points will be awarded cash prizes, then the top 4 teams will
move on to play a grand planned semi-final and final which will determine the
overall Premier League Champion. Matches will continue to be played in enclosed
venues where possible. These changes have been made to sustain interest and
excitement in GFA football.
