2. Introduction and definition

The term “filter bubble” came into existence in 2011 when
Eli Pariser published his “The Filter Bubble: What The
Internet Is Hiding From You”. In his book, Pariser described
the filter bubble as being a situation in which a website
algorithm decides what information to show a user based
on the information they have interacted with previously.

In other words, instead of being presented with
information which may or may not be relevant, the
website’s algorithm determines which information is most
relevant and presents that information to the user whilst
filtering out all other information.
