INTRODUCTION
The term "narcissist" has gained popularity and has
given rise to a flurry of memes, blog posts, online
tests, and publications. Likewise, a flurry of
reproaches. Almost everyone believes they have a
good one. There are the pompous boss who brags
about their own ideas, the image-obsessed friend
who is in love with their own reflection, and the
cheating ex. But do you actually know a narcissist,
or are you just using the term to describe someone
who exhibits some of these traits?
Extreme narcissism, a spectrum personality
disorder, features a web of deceit that goes beyond
regular self-absorption. A narcissist will turn into
an energy vampire if you approach them too
closely, turning your life into a circus that makes
you feel miserable to entertain them by doing
acrobatics.
The most frequent characteristics shared by
narcissists are dismissiveness, entitlement, and
grandiosity. These characteristics include flagrant
disregard for your boundaries, jealousy and
resentment when someone else receives attention,

and irrational expectations for how their needs
should be met. Of course, they also desperately
seek out people who can validate them.
Read on if you think you might be in a one-sided
relationship with a narcissist or if you think you
might, whether or not the situation feels poisonous.
To understand what narcissism truly is—the allure,
the gas lighting, the seduction, the hurt, and the
twisted truth—as well as how to handle a
narcissistic individual, we spokewith experts.

CHAPTER ONE
Managing a Narcissist
You can be unsure if your spouse, a coworker, or
member of your family is narcissistic. While many
people exhibit what medical professionals refer to
as narcissistic tendencies, such as arrogance and
the belief that they are entitled to something,
dealing with those who have narcissistic
personality disorder can be more difficult.
Living with a narcissist necessitates the
development of new or more sophisticated
emotional skills, according to Kimberly Perlin, a
clinical social worker with a license in Towson,
Maryland. She treats narcissists and specializes in
assisting women in relationships with them.
It can be frustrating and emotionally taxing to be
around narcissists. Your connection can be
centered on them. They may make you feel judged
and worn out.

Carla Marie Manly, PhD, a clinical psychologist in
Santa Rosa, California, didn't know her older
sibling was a narcissist when she was a child.
"Having this as a child it was really difficult to
deal with a highly controlling person, she says. “I
didn't realize this sister was a seriously
problematic narcissist until I was in my adult
years."
The ideal example is one of Perlin's customers.
When he viewed my new website and was
offended that it didn't mention him, a client with
whom I had been working for years ended therapy,
according to her.
Narcissists typically:
Have a great feeling of grandiosity (they
frequently feel superior to others and have high
degrees of self-worth, self-importance, and self-
confidence)
Are haughty
Take advantage of others to further one's own
interests
They think they're special or distinctive.

CHAPTER TWO
Relationships and Narcissists
Manly gained a lot of knowledge about narcissists
from dealing with her older sibling and from her
own experiences. "I've discovered that narcissists
live for themselves. They frequently think they are
faultless and assign blame to others for problems
that occurat work, at home, or in social settings,
she claims.
Narcissists will go to any lengths to achieve their
goals. They generally don’tfeel compassionand
can’t connect personally with others, even the
people who are closestto them.
A narcissist may crave adulation at work, even if it
harms other people. They might mistreat
coworkers, take credit for other people's work, or
alter their behavior to win the approval of
superiors. They might appear although they are
affable and diligent, there is frequently more to
them than meets the eye.
An egotist can affect the whole family at home. A

narcissist who is in an intimate relationship with
you could be very critical of you, distant from you,
and contemptuous of you. You might feel alone,
disrespected, and invisible. If your parent is a
narcissist, you might have experienced neglect or
abuse as a youngster.
A narcissist should occasionally be avoided,
especially if they are abusive.
I've decided to take a step back from investing in a
close relationship with my sibling for the sake of
my own mental health, says Manly. She
acknowledges that her sister doesn'tview their
behavior as an issue and that a continued
relationship with her brother would simply result
in more of the same as her sibling has no interest
in self-improvement.
Frustration.

CHAPTER THREE
How to Handle a Narcissist
Follow these guidelines to deal with narcissists:
Educate yourself. Get more familiar with the
condition. You can learn how to deal with the
narcissist's strengths and shortcomings by better
understanding them. Knowing who they are could
also help you have realistic expectations and
acceptthe situation for what it is.
Set constraints. Be frank about your limitations.
It's okay if it annoys or disappoints the narcissist.
Keep in mind that you are not in charge of that
person's feelings, advises Perlin.
Be a voice for yourself. Always be succinct and
straightforward when stating your needs. Perlin
advises, "Make sure they comprehend your desire.
Watch your language. Manly asserts that
narcissists have trouble accepting constructive
criticism. Aim to offer thoughtful, constructive
19. 19 | P a g e
remarks.
Be composed. If they try to argue with you or
gaslight you, try not to respond (making you doubt
your own reality). If they lash out, Talley advises
seeing them as a 3-year-old who feels abandoned
because their parent has set a bedtime.
Build a network of support. Living with a
narcissist can make you feel uncertain, confused,
and self-conscious. Make sure you have a core
group of people who can assist you in your life,
advises Talley.
Bring a therapist in. Although therapy won't make
your partner less narcissistic, it might help you
resolve some issues. You can learn how to
approachproblem-solving with the narcissist from
a counselor.
How to Deal with a Narcissist Wrong
Problems with a narcissist can arise from specific
20. 20 | P a g e
circumstances, it’s bestto stay away from them.
Abstain from belligerence or standing up to. Manly
believes it's bestto avoid direct confrontation with
narcissists. Even if it would be challenging to
avoid them at all costs, it might be preferable to
accommodatetheir demand to be in charge.
Try not to endeavor to direct them. Egomaniacs
appreciate being in controland every now and
again stress over losing it. Manly asserts that
attempts to mentor or train a narcissist "will
frequently fail."
Don't count on them to agree with you on
everything. Making egomaniacs see things your
way probably won’t work since they would rather
not admit when they’re off-base or that they’re
detestable.
Don't anticipate significant, in-depth
21. 21 | P a g e
communication.
Since narcissists lack empathy, genuine, heartfelt
communication frequently fails and can even lead
to an argument.
A fit of rage or a shutdown reaction," Manly
claims.
Don't revisit old problems. Don't try to convince
them that their actions have a long history or that,
for instance, they are eerily similar to their father,
advises Perlin. When you convey wishes or injured
feelings, stay in the moment.
Keep in mind that people with narcissistic
personality disorder typically don'tchange. Your
relationship probably won't ever be healthy, even if
you learn to manage it better.
