The state of California should address big meat corporations to fight water drought. "Save our water" campaign only raises awareness for people's water consumption, which accounts for a ridiculously small percentage of water usage.
2. Today’s Outline
Needs Analysis
Save Our Water and Analysis
Lack of Global Awareness
Lessons learned
3. Needs Analysis
1.
• Mediterranean style climate: little or no rain
• Less precipitation over the years
2.
• Higher temperatures (2014 and 2015)
• Severe dry periods of droughts (worst 2015)
3.
• Longer, drier droughts and decreased groundwater levels
• Water conservation is crucial in California
4. “Save Our Water”- State of California
April 1st, 2015
Goal 1: Reduce potable water usage in urban areas by 25%
statewide
Goal 2: Save 1.24 million acre-feet of water
Goal 3: Change the ways we use water, both indoors and
outdoors
5. Campaign’s Results…
Goals (Set April 2015) Results (June 2015 – Feb 2016)
- Reduce potable water usage by
25%
- Save 1.24M acre-feet of water
- Statewide cumulative savings
24%
- 1.19M acre-feet of water saved
- Water saved is enough to supply 5.19M Californians for 1 year
(15% of pop)
- Campaign seems relatively successful
6. … Lead to Relative Success…
Reasons for Success:
Campaign was driven by its local state “California”
Thorough research by local community
SMART goals
Easy website (charts, graphics, simple explanations)
Social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
Promotion of active participation (e.g. Selfie)
8. … But, Lack of Global Awareness…
An average person uses 90 gallons / 340 liters of water per day
Eating consumes more water than showering, cleaning and drinking
The food industry is the one that consumes most water
120 average showers (2 months) = 1 hamburger
9.
10. … Leads to Failure
20% of water consumption in California is by households
80% of water consumption is by industries (mostly food industry)
Lack of awareness
11.
12. Political and economic implications
California is the largest food producing state of the USA
Food producers and meat associations have a very strong political power
13.
14. Conclusion
Why does the state of California not reveal and promote awareness on the
water consumption for food and meat production?
“Californians rose to the occasion, reducing irrigation, fixing leaks, taking shorter showers, and saving our precious water resources in all sorts of ways”
The first goal was almost met so we can say that the campaign has been relatively successful. But, they used “Remember, every drop of water is important. Use water wisely” while there is a large part of the population that lacks awareness of what requires more water. Lack of awareness: the campaign does not mention how meat consumption is the main cause of water consumption
