The Mars rover InSight carries a seismometer that can detect seismic waves. If S-waves are always detected with no shadow zone, it would imply Mars has no liquid outer core. However, if shadow zones are detected but at smaller angles than Earth, it would mean Mars' core is smaller than Earth's.
