The Sagarmala project is an initiative launched by the Indian government in 2015 to enhance infrastructure development around ports and coastlines. It aims to optimize transportation costs through multimodal transport networks, lower logistics costs for industries near coastal areas, and improve export competitiveness. The project involves over 577 projects totaling approximately Rs. 8.5 lakh crore, including developing new ports and ports near 10 planned smart cities.

3. WHEN WAS SARAGMALA PROJECT LAUNCHED
IN INDIA?
• On 25 March 2015, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, gave the final nod to proceed with the Sagarmala
Project.
• It was a significant development in India's growth story.

5. OBJECTIVES OF SAGARMALA PROJECT
• Reducing cost of transporting domestic cargo through optimizing
modal mix.

industrial capacities near the coast.
• Improving export competitiveness by developing port proximate
discrete manufacturing clusters.

• Sagarmala project aims at holistic port infrastructure development
along the 7,500-km-long coastline through modernisation,
mechanisation and computerisation. Under this port-led
development framework government hopes to increase its cargo
traffic three-fold in next 5 years.
