A Platform for Commercialization of
Scientific Achievements

3. Basic difference between Discovery,
Invention, Innovation and Research
⢠Discovery :Discovery is finding out or figuring out something that
preexists.
Example: Discovery of the America by Christopher Columbus
⢠Invention :Invention is the creation of something new (that is first
of its kind)using preexisting object. Invention can be defined as the
creation of a product or introduction of a process for the first time.
Example: Alexander Graham Bell invented Telephone
⢠Innovation: Someone makes a significant contribution or improve
an existing product, process or service.
Example: There is new innovation in mobile every year( New features
are being added, Size is getting reduced etc.)
⢠Research: Any creative systematic activity undertaken in order to
increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of man,
culture and society, and the use of this knowledge to devise new
applications.
4. What is commercialization?
⢠Commercialization is the process through
which Revenue/income is generated using
new idea, process or product.
⢠Ex : The knowledge/idea âThermophilic
Bacteria have heat stable enzymesâ have no
commercial value till we isolate/purify the
industrially important enzyme/s and ready to
sell.
5. Idea to commercialization pathway
Basic Science
Pre-clinical
Development
Phase 1
human trials
Final product Marketing
Discovery Product development Delivery
University,
research
institutions,
Small
biotech
company,
industry, etc.
Expertise,
experience,
infrastructure,
resources.
Pharma, industry,
governments,
international
agencies
6. Contributor of Successful Commercialization of
Innovation
The innovator
Distributors
Complementaries
Suppliers:
manufacturers
University
Expert
organizations
Policy makers and
regulators
Inventors
media
Lead users
Communities
Boundary
spanners
Opinion leaders
The mass of users and customers
Public
organization
Advance
diffusion
Make the
innovation
available to users
Complement
offerings and
knowledge
support market
creation
Increase use
e.g. Through
licensing
Provide
funding
Shape
standard
and
finance
Increase learning on
commercialization
Provide information
and prompt
collaboration
Add scientific
knowledge, trust
and creditability
Build awerness and
convey information
7. How to start a start-up
Live in future,
ahead of your time
What is missing
in the world
Look for funding and building
versions one at the same time
Find a co-founder
Write it down
and bounce
ideas around
Register your C-corp,
split equityIterate on the
prototype until
it makes sense
Show the prototype
to 100 people
Make a
prototype
Launch â let everyone know you
have made something
Get to 1,000 users
Follow up with users.
Are they coming
back?
Grow 5% a week (hard, but
proven possible)
Keep growing for
another 4 years and
at that rate you will
reach 25 million
users
Launch again (after iterating) launch until
users stay (AirBnB launched 3 times)
Yes,
they are
coming
back
No , they
come and left
8. Why communication in English
Language?
1. It is global language: Major world population
knows and apply.
2. Most of the tools/apps are available in English
only.
3. Most of the research journals/books are
available in English only.
9. Platform for propagation and
commercialization of Scientific
knowledge/Technology.
⢠Social sites
⢠YouTube
⢠Research gate
⢠Linked In
⢠Personal website
⢠Book, Journal, Magazine
⢠Institutes/Universities
⢠New age platform of collaborative work
⢠Biotech Zone
⢠Science Exchange
⢠Scientist.com
⢠Innocentive
⢠Incubation Centre
10. Why commercialization of Scientific
achievements?
ďCommercialization of research provides new
products and services that can be used to solve
life's problems, as well as making improvements
to the quality of life of users
ďSocietal Benefit
ďEconomic Growth
ďPartnerships with investor and industry:
ďCreates social impact and enhance reputation of
Scientists and Scientific activities
11. Basic tools which help in
propagation/effective dissemination of
knowledge and Technology

4. Photoshop
5. Corel draw
6. Animation
7. Subject and topic wise tools( bioinformatics).

12. Q. You are very good teacher of science at Darbhanga.
You have tuition class and you are teaching in Maithily/
Hindi/English(mix language).
How can you increase your income applying technology and
communication?
Q. One of my villager knows how to make basket using bamboo
stick which is unique. How can he increase his income? What
he should do?
Q. What is the hurdle of commercialization of Genetically
modified mustard?
Q. Suppose You know the protein which is responsible for
increasing height of human. Can you commercialize this
knowledge?
13. Opportunities for Scientist/Researcher
1. College/University teacher
2. Scientist in research laboratories
3. Editor of Science journal
4. Editor of news media
5. Patent attorney
6. Freelancer consultant of company
7. Working in companies
8. Book author/reviewer/editor
9. Freelance tutor
10.Technology Transfer officer
14. PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is the "wrongful appropriation" and
"stealing and publicationâ of another author's
"language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions" and the
representation of them as one's own original work.
