STAYING SAFE WHILE STUDYING ABROAD
1. STAYING SAFE WHILE STUDYING ABROAD
Staying in a new place usually invites new sorts of challenges and inconveniences.
The challenges can at times feel quite intimidating and may even force us to limit
ourselves in terms of reaping full benefits and privileges owing to lack of control.
We earnestly believe that with proper checks and measures we can safely navigate
and enjoy the twin objectives of learning and fun during the times of staying
abroad.
1. Study the Area, Major Landmarks, and Connectivity: Being new to the
city, it is good to study the area in advance, know about city’s major
landmarks and routes of connectivity. As an alternative, keep a city map
handy and also download the map on your phone with details of metro
routes, helpline numbers, restaurants and hospitals.
2. Keep the Emergency Helpline Number on Speed Dial: To stay safe, one
must be in control of situations. Keeping the helpline number on speed dial
may save us from many awkward situations.
2. 3. Navigate and Travel Using Google Map: Travel the city during daytime
with or without a friend and cross-verify the routes using Google map. Also
download the route maps of buses, metros, and cars.
4. Keep The Address Of Your Accommodation Both In English And
Native Language: Even if you get lost somewhere, it’s always better to ask
for the direction. Keeping the accommodation address in both English and
native language is an added advantage.
5. Avoid Dark and Non-Tourist Spots: Avoid short-cut routes, which are not
usually taken by most people, to save on time. It’s better to be late than to
land up in trouble. With technology and preparedness, there is seldom any
reason to panic about.
6. Be Skeptical: Say no to offers for dinner and hanging out from any
acquaintance during the initial months of stay. Until and unless you are very
sure of the person you are associating with, it’s better to stay in your world.
After all, you are there for some serious study. Participate in group events
for networking and socializing.
7. Learn the Language: If learning the language doesn’t seem feasible, learn
15 to 20 most common sentences/ideas at the least. It shall provide a lot of
confidence to safely walk around the city and be of great help just in case
one gets lost in the city travelling alone. Remember the rule of 80/20, these
15-20 sentences will cover the first 10 minutes of any kind of conversation.
8. Don’t Share In Details of Your Stay to Everyone: With social networking
platforms also has come to a trend to interact and mingle with friends and
acquaintances on Facebook, twitter, and WhatsApp. First, these are serious
time wasters and second, it may invite unwarranted requests and
conversations that may even come in the way of your career. Keep social
networks at bay. Use the college time to your maximum benefit. Once you
are home, it’s better to just study and relax.
9. Always Keep Your Phone Charged: Always, always, always keep your
mobile phone charged and internet-enabled no matter what. Though mobile
phones can be serious distractions it also has its share of advantages. This
single device will keep track of locations, set reminders, organize activities,
keep interactions active and work as used to make payments. Carrying a
power bank is also advisable.
