departments and prominent programmes.

Auckland is the economic and cultural hub of New Zealand and the University of
Auckland is the country’s largest university with over 40,000 students. Established in
1883, the university conducts teaching and learning within eight faculties, two large-scale
research institutes - The Auckland Bioengineering Institute which pioneers computer
modelling of the human body and The Liggins Institute, which is engaged in biomedical
and clinical research.
The eight faculties are - Faculty of Arts, Business School, National Institute of Creative
Arts and Industries, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Law, Faculty
of Medical and Health Sciences, Faculty of Science, School of Theology.
2. University of Otago
The University of Otago established in 1869 is New Zealand’s oldest higher education
institution. Situated in Dunedin, the university hosts over 20,000 students and is known for
its innovative research initiatives in various fields and the maximum number of PhD
students. The various faculties of the University of Otago are School of Business
Departments, Division of Health Science Departments, Division of Humanities
Department and Division of Science Departments.

Massey University started as an agriculture college in 1927 but with time it grew up to
become one of the most popular educational institutions of New Zealand. Today, Massey
University hosts over 35,000 students in varying educational departments. Massey
University is also the largest residential university of New Zealand and has 3 campuses
spread over three 3 cities. The important departments here are – Health & Social Services,
People, Environment and planning, Language Studies & English, and Media Studies.

4. Lincoln University
Renowned for its courses in Agriculture and Agribusiness, Lincoln University is the third
oldest university in New Zealand. The important departments of the university are
Agriculture & Life Sciences, Commerce, Environment, society & design, Foundation
Studies & English Language Centre. Lincoln University is also home to - The
Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit (AERU), The Tourism, Recreation Research,
and Education Centre (TRREC), The Centre for Advanced Computational Solutions
(CfACS), and The Centre for Soil and Environmental Quality. It is based in Christchurch
and received a 5-star rating for internationalization and inclusiveness in the QS Stars
Rating System 2018.

Founded in 1873, the University of Canterbury is the second-oldest higher education
institution in New Zealand. It is located in South Island, in islands largest city of
Christchurch. With more than 15,000 students, the university offers an array of educational
programmes in subjects including arts, commerce, engineering, fine arts, forestry, health
sciences, law, music, social work, speech and language pathology, science, sports
coaching and teaching. The important faculties of Universities are -Chemical and Process
Engineering, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science and Software
Engineering, Accounting and Information Systems, Civil and Natural Resources
Engineering, Communication Disorders, Economics and Finance, Law, Languages,

Victoria University of Wellington was founded in 1897 and is ranked number one for
research quality in New Zealand. There are over 21000 students enrolled in 9 faculties of
the university. It is also highly regarded for its programmes in law, the humanities, and
science. The University has three campuses spread across Wellington. The important
departments in Victoria University are – Faculty of Architecture & Design, Faculty of
Engineering, Faculty of Commerce and Administration, Faculty Education, Faculty of
Graduate Research, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of
Science.
7. University of Waikato
The University of Waikato is based in Hamilton and Tauranga on the North Island. It
offers hundreds of educational programmes and hosts over 12000 students. The university
was established in 1964 and has been awarded QS five stars for facilities, social sciences
and management, employability, internationalization, teaching, and inclusiveness. The
important faculties in the University of Waikato are – Accounting, Computer science,

Started as Auckland Technical College, today Auckland University of Technology offers
over 250 courses in an array of subjects. AUT is ranked in the top 50 universities under 50
years old. The important faculties in the university are – Engineering, Art & Design,
Communication, Business, Computing and Mathematical Sciences, Creative Technologies,
Law, Science & Health Sciences.
