New to Cub Scout Camping? An overview of
the upcoming Cub Scout Camping Programs!
This document has been created for Pack 142 in Iron Horse District within Circle10
Camping takes you on exciting adventures into the natural
world. You’ll learn to live with others in the out-of-doors.
You’ll learn to be a good citizen of the outdoors.
Camping is fun, and it’s good for your mind, body, and spirit. It helps you learn to rely on yourself—on your
own skills and knowledge.
When you go camping as a Cub Scout, you get skills you will learn and use more, later, as a Boy Scout.
Cub Scout camping often starts with a pack overnighter at a local park or at one of our council camps.

What is camping?
Camping is spending the night at a group event. For first time families, it can be
intimidating, but it shouldn’t be. Camping is not hard!
A few things to keep in mind:
• Official scout camp outings may be organized by Circle 10 (our N. Texas regional group), Iron Horse (our district within Circle 10), our pack
(142) and for Webelos only – your Den. Tigers, Bears, Wolves may not organize a Den overnight camping trip per Scout rules.
• Some Circle 10 and Iron Horse camp-outs are only for the scout and trained volunteers and administers, while others invite (or require) a
parent or the family to join the group
• Iron Horse weekend camp out called the Cub-o-ree invite the whole family
• Iron Horse weekend camp called the Pal-n-me require a parent/guardian (or both parents) but not siblings
• Iron Horse event called the Camporee (only Webelos are eligible for this Boy Scout event) require a parent/guardian; siblings not welcome
• Circle 10 summer resident camp in July is only for the scout and trained volunteer adults
• Your rank is not your rank after June 1st!! What what?! Keep in mind that scouts rank up on June 1st. So on June 2nd, there are no
Tigers. Assuming that requirements are met, Tigers become Wolves. Wolves become Bears. Bears become Webelos. And Webelos
who complete the Webelos Badge may become Arrow of Light!
• Pets, guns, fireworks are always prohibited from camp outs
• Ask before bringing axes, saws, sheath knives, candy, or gum
• Packing lists will vary among events – you usually will be required to bring a tent, mattress/cot/pad and bedding. You always will need to
pack clothing and toiletries, and most of the time a mess kit, backpack, water bottle, flashlight, first aid kit, watch, boy scout hand book,
compass, notebook/pencil, food and water. More about this later!
Where do we camp?
Your scouts and our pack almost always
camps in one of 5 places:
• Myers Park – a city park in McKinney
• One of the four Circle10 owned DFW
local Boy Scout camps
1. Clements / Trevor Rees-Jones Scout
Camp (located 2 hours southeast of
Frisco in Athens, TX)
2. Camp Constantin / Jack D. Furst
Acquatic Base Camp (located 2 hours
west off of Possum Kingdom Lake)
3. Camp Wisdom (located an hour south
of us in Dallas)
4. Camp James Ray (located off Lake
Texoma)

Reserving Space for camping opportunities
For pack organized events such as our Pack 142 Spring Camp Out, you only need to reserve online at Scout Book or on a physical sign-up sheet.
For the District Day/Twilight Camp; Parent N Pal; and Cub-O-Ree (next one is fall of 2018 and not reviewed here), there are generally two steps:
1. Register and pay online at the Boy Scout online website called “Camp Master”
2. Reserve with our pack on Scout Book so that we know how many Scouts – and if applicable the number of parents/siblings – are attending. This is important
because our Pack has to provide volunteer Adult Leaders for many District and Council organized events – camping or otherwise.

Parent Training
Boy Scouts of America highly recommends that all parents go through the 1.5 hour Youth
Protection Training (YPT) course.
The Youth Protection Training (YPT) is a mandatory requirement for all Adult Leaders,
including parents signing up as Adult Leaders of the upcoming Twilight Camp.
• Adult Leaders:
• Several camping events throughout the year require that at least two attending parents from the Den or Pack
volunteer as “Adult Leaders. If there are no Adult Leaders, then Scouts may not be able to attend an event.
• In general, a ratio must be maintained with 1 Adult Leader per 5 attending Scouts.
• 1 to 10 scouts: 2 Adult Leaders required
• 11 to 15 scouts: 3 Adult Leaders required
• And so forth…
• Please see this web page for more information about what it means to be a volunteer Adult Leader:
https://www.scouting.org/programs/cub-scouts/leaders/.
Two YPT Training options: “face-to-face” and online
• The State of Texas requires any adult attending a BSA long-term camp to take an
instructor-led, “face-to-face” YPT training (“F2F YPT”)
• For Circle Ten Council, the long-term camps include summer camp, Webelos
resident camp, day/twilight camp, winter camp, and NYLT.
• Circle Ten Council offers multiple sessions of “F2F YPT” during spring and fall
months as well as at each camp session. The training is also available through
your district.
• F2F YPT is also valid for two years and can substitute for the online training
described below (but not vice versa). For this reason, our pack strongly
encourages parents to enroll in F2F YPT if possible.
• For other Scout camping events that are not considered long-term camps, Adult Leaders
only have to take the online YPT training course at my.scouting.org. You must register for
and take YPT training online through my.scouting.org. Please note that it is program
specific (Venturing leaders need Venturing specific YPT), and is required to be refreshed
every two years.

Camp
TBD – depends on food plan, likely $5 to $10
per person
Our spring campout will be held in April at the Clements / Trevor Rees-Jones Scout Camp in Athens, TX. There are wildlife, trails, fishing, rowboats, canoes, bb guns, archery, climbing wall, camp fires, and
tons of fun. We may be able to consider a group horse trail ride with enough interest.
There is no better option for you to bond with your kids / scouts than at our family campout, held at a first rate facility with more amenities than nearly any state or national park. There is no better option
for you to trial camping for the first time than with our experienced and trained pack/den leaders.
The pack will be providing Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner on Saturday and Breakfast on Sunday. You should bring a water bottle, snacks, and provide for your own dinner Friday night.
FAQ
Who is this good for? Families!
When should I reserve by? Please, please, please reserve early. If we know our camp count we can better make decisions about providing food, water, and kitchen supplies.
How do I reserve? Please use Scoutbook – please find this campout on the event calendar. There will also be $10 collected per attending person and a physical sign up sheet at our April pack meeting.
How can I help the leaders? Do you need volunteers? It’s a ton of work to provide food, kitchen, firewood, etc. Yes – please see us if you would be willing to help us with anything – even if it’s just extra
chairs for the camp!
What do I bring? See packing list on a following slide. Also for this outing, bring fishing gear if you want to go fishing.
When I arrive, how do I find you? We have reserved the Armadillo campsite, please see the Clements/Trevor Rees-Jones Campground map later in this material for the location. Or just call/text us when
you arrive.
How do I get all of my camping gear to the reserved campsite You drive. All campgrounds are vehicle accessible. You will later park in the main lot after dropping off your gear though.
What are the activities? We are still finalizing. Archery and BB guns for sure.
Is it safe? Yes, it’s a great camp and… there will be first aid/CPR trained staff on site
What if the weather is terrible? We will cancel at worse case. Each campout has a leader trained in emergency weather procedures. That said, your car will be close by and permanent buildings are on
premise if required. And please bring rain gear / ponchos. See packing list on following slide.
Do I need to go through training first? No! We have that covered in the pack leadership.
So our little pack will have this entire camp to ourselves? No, actually our District is holding its annual Parent-N-Pal at the camp at the same time (when we booked our spring camp out last May there was
no conflict – but bad luck, the district rescheduled and it is what it is). So long story short, we won’t alone there, and it will likely be somewhat crowded.
Can I drop off my scout for the weekend? No! We need one parent to be present for any scouts in attendance. This is not a “drop off” function.
Um, yeah, so I’ve never camped and still not sure I want to try it. My wife hates bugs too! No worries, let the pack leaders know and we will get one of our experienced campers to arrange a 1:1 session
either at their house or yours to take a look at camping supplies and put your mind at ease. Or if we get enough interest, we will hold a local intro to camping session on a weeknight or weekend including

Medical forms – Parts A & B are required for
the Spring Pack Campout
A FEW NOTES AND RULES ABOUT THE CAMPOUT:
• As a Cub Scout Pack we fall under the BSA (Boy Scouts of America) rules. The pack leaders will enforce the BSA rules to the
best of their ability.
• Cub Scouts are not allowed to play in the camp fire or with fire.
• Alcoholic beverages are not allowed on the campout.
• Tobacco products are not allowed on the campout.
• Profanity is not allowed in the camp grounds.
• Each person attending the campout, whether camping or just coming for the day must complete both Medical Form A & B
and turn it in. We will be collecting these at the pack meeting on 4/26/18. This is a BSA requirement for medical
emergencies and we are required to collect one for each person. We understand that this is a medical form and will
contain some personal information. The forms will be stored in a secure locked location. At the end of the cub scouting
year the forms will be properly disposed of.
• Medical Forms A, B, & C can be found at this link:

The Iron Horse District Day/Twilight camp is held at Myers Park in McKinney. This is a 4.5 hour camp held in late afternoon / early evenings and involves some great activities including archery, BB guns,
wood crafts, handicrafts, leather work, nature study, sports, swimming, among others. Parents are welcome to join their scouts for this camp. This is really a neat opportunity for parents to experience day
camp and bond in a special way with their kids. In fact, Scouts may offer the only opportunity like this in the entire metroplex. Prior participants use words like “awesome” and “best ever” to describe it.
The Iron Horse District does most of the work with this camp. They hold activity areas and do all of the set up and tear down of things. That said, each Den is responsible for providing two parents (aka
Adult Leaders in Scout speak) who in turn are responsible for chaperoning the cub scouts in the den from one activity to the next. Dens parents are welcome to rotate in and out of the daily Adult Leader
rotation. For example, two parents can volunteer as Adult Leaders on Monday and two different parents can volunteer as Adult Leaders on Tuesday, and so forth.
Each Adult Leader MUST go through in-person facilitated Youth Protection Training. It’s a 90 minute course held nearly weekly at a rotating schedule of local Frisco Churches. See training schedule on the
following slide. Once trained, the training is good for some time.
FAQ
Who is this good for? Scouts! Drop off is OK but parents are welcome to stay.
When should I reserve by? March 31 for early bird $70 pricing. May 15 for late $80 pricing.
How do I reserve? Must register / pay online through “Camp Master.” Please also RSVP on Scoutbook so that we have a head count for the purpose of assigning Adult Leaders. See next page for links.
How can I help the leaders? Do you need volunteers? Yes! Each Den MUST line up two Adult Leaders for each day of camp. Please volunteer to make this a success.
What do I bring? Exact packing list to be confirmed, but a snack/dinner and bottled water are a must.
When I arrive, how do I find you? TBD
What are the activities? Archery, BB guns, wood crafts, handicrafts, leather work, nature study, sports, swimming, among others.
What if the weather is terrible? Please bring rain gear / ponchos if the forecast calls for rain. If severe weather calls for cancellation, you will be notified.

up on June 1st and you should enroll at the rank your Scout will be at the time of the camp.
Adult Leader Training: Each Den is to provide 2 chaperones called Adult Leaders for each day of camp. These Adult Leaders are typically volunteer parents from our Dens. Dens are welcome to
have different volunteers on different days, and in fact are welcome to have different parents for each of the 4 (or 5 for Webelos) days of the camp. However, all Adult Leaders must go through in-
person facilitator 90 minute Youth Protection Training (YPT). This training is held locally at various churches in Frisco. The training schedule for this is below.

Start your overnight camp experience at Camp James Ray, on beautiful Lake Texoma, for your
summer camp adventure! Thousands of Scouts enjoy swimming, outdoor skills, sports,
canoeing and boating, shooting sports, and much, much more!
Each campsite is equipped with a tent platform and a BSA wall tent (sleeps 2), items to bring: a
ground cloth, cot, bedding, toiletries, change of clothes, swimming trunks, water bottle, camp
chair, bug spray and sunscreen. 3 meals a day will be served in our air-conditioned dining hall.
Packs are camped together, two-deep leadership is required. A minimum of two adults, we do
require a ratio of 1:5 (one adult for every five Scouts). All adults and youth will be required to
take the swim test if you plan to swim at the pool.
FAQ
Can we swap out Adult Leaders during the camp duration? Yes!
Who is this good for? Scouts! Drop off ONLY unless you are one of the adults who are staying with your pack.
How/when should I reserve? Discuss with Pack Leadership if Pack 142 plans on having official presence at these camps. If our pack is not, you will need to arrange your reservation with Circle10 directly.
See this link for forms and information: http://circleten.org/resident-camp
Should Scouts bring money? The camp does have a trading post and we do suggest that Scouts bring $20 to $25 of spending money. This is completely optional and up to the Scout to keep safe.
What role does parents have in this camp? Every group of Cub Scouts must have at least two Adult Leaders, and must maintain a ratio of 1 Adult for every 5 Scouts attending the camp. So 2 Adults for
up to 10 Scouts, 3 adults for 11 to 15 Scouts, 4 adults for 16 to 20 Scouts, and so forth. In addition, parents and guests are more then welcome to visit the camp and dine with their scouts during the day.
What are the Training Requirements for the parents who volunteer as Adult Leaders???
What do attending Scouts and Adults bring? See the following slide with complete suggested packing list. This packing list was taken from page 8 of the Adult Leader Guide and can be found at this link.

Pack 142 Cub Scouts Camping Guide 2018 - North Texas and Frisco

  • 1. New to Cub Scout Camping? An overview of the upcoming Cub Scout Camping Programs! This document has been created for Pack 142 in Iron Horse District within Circle10 Camping takes you on exciting adventures into the natural world. You’ll learn to live with others in the out-of-doors. You’ll learn to be a good citizen of the outdoors. Camping is fun, and it’s good for your mind, body, and spirit. It helps you learn to rely on yourself—on your own skills and knowledge. When you go camping as a Cub Scout, you get skills you will learn and use more, later, as a Boy Scout. Cub Scout camping often starts with a pack overnighter at a local park or at one of our council camps. March 23, 2018 v1
  • 2. Contents • Intro • What is camping • Where do we camp • Upcoming camping opportunities • How to reserve camp space for your Scout • Parent / Adult Leader training • Camping Outings Detail • Pack 142 Spring Weekend (and packing list) • Iron Horse Day/Twilight Camp Summer 2018 • Iron Horse Parent N Pal Spring 2018 • Circle 10 overnight cub/Webelos Summer Camp 2018 (and packing list) • Camp/Park Reference: Info on the various area campgrounds
  • 3. What is camping? Camping is spending the night at a group event. For first time families, it can be intimidating, but it shouldn’t be. Camping is not hard! A few things to keep in mind: • Official scout camp outings may be organized by Circle 10 (our N. Texas regional group), Iron Horse (our district within Circle 10), our pack (142) and for Webelos only – your Den. Tigers, Bears, Wolves may not organize a Den overnight camping trip per Scout rules. • Some Circle 10 and Iron Horse camp-outs are only for the scout and trained volunteers and administers, while others invite (or require) a parent or the family to join the group • Iron Horse weekend camp out called the Cub-o-ree invite the whole family • Iron Horse weekend camp called the Pal-n-me require a parent/guardian (or both parents) but not siblings • Iron Horse event called the Camporee (only Webelos are eligible for this Boy Scout event) require a parent/guardian; siblings not welcome • Circle 10 summer resident camp in July is only for the scout and trained volunteer adults • Your rank is not your rank after June 1st!! What what?! Keep in mind that scouts rank up on June 1st. So on June 2nd, there are no Tigers. Assuming that requirements are met, Tigers become Wolves. Wolves become Bears. Bears become Webelos. And Webelos who complete the Webelos Badge may become Arrow of Light! • Pets, guns, fireworks are always prohibited from camp outs • Ask before bringing axes, saws, sheath knives, candy, or gum • Packing lists will vary among events – you usually will be required to bring a tent, mattress/cot/pad and bedding. You always will need to pack clothing and toiletries, and most of the time a mess kit, backpack, water bottle, flashlight, first aid kit, watch, boy scout hand book, compass, notebook/pencil, food and water. More about this later!

  • 8. Reserving Space for camping opportunities For pack organized events such as our Pack 142 Spring Camp Out, you only need to reserve online at Scout Book or on a physical sign-up sheet. For the District Day/Twilight Camp; Parent N Pal; and Cub-O-Ree (next one is fall of 2018 and not reviewed here), there are generally two steps: 1. Register and pay online at the Boy Scout online website called “Camp Master” 2. Reserve with our pack on Scout Book so that we know how many Scouts – and if applicable the number of parents/siblings – are attending. This is important because our Pack has to provide volunteer Adult Leaders for many District and Council organized events – camping or otherwise. • 9. Parent Training Boy Scouts of America highly recommends that all parents go through the 1.5 hour Youth Protection Training (YPT) course. The Youth Protection Training (YPT) is a mandatory requirement for all Adult Leaders, including parents signing up as Adult Leaders of the upcoming Twilight Camp. • Adult Leaders: • Several camping events throughout the year require that at least two attending parents from the Den or Pack volunteer as “Adult Leaders. If there are no Adult Leaders, then Scouts may not be able to attend an event. • In general, a ratio must be maintained with 1 Adult Leader per 5 attending Scouts. • 1 to 10 scouts: 2 Adult Leaders required • 11 to 15 scouts: 3 Adult Leaders required • And so forth… • Please see this web page for more information about what it means to be a volunteer Adult Leader: https://www.scouting.org/programs/cub-scouts/leaders/. Two YPT Training options: “face-to-face” and online • The State of Texas requires any adult attending a BSA long-term camp to take an instructor-led, “face-to-face” YPT training (“F2F YPT”) • For Circle Ten Council, the long-term camps include summer camp, Webelos resident camp, day/twilight camp, winter camp, and NYLT. • Circle Ten Council offers multiple sessions of “F2F YPT” during spring and fall months as well as at each camp session. The training is also available through your district. • F2F YPT is also valid for two years and can substitute for the online training described below (but not vice versa). For this reason, our pack strongly encourages parents to enroll in F2F YPT if possible. • For other Scout camping events that are not considered long-term camps, Adult Leaders only have to take the online YPT training course at my.scouting.org. You must register for and take YPT training online through my.scouting.org. Please note that it is program specific (Venturing leaders need Venturing specific YPT), and is required to be refreshed every two years. Frisco Area Spring “face-to-face” Youth Protection Training (F2F YPT) Training Schedule” is listed below. Other area F2F YPT training may be found on Camp Master: https://circle10.camp-master.com/. 6:30pm to 8:00pm Tue Mar 27, 2018 (Frisco First United Methodist on Preston) Thu Mar 29, 2018 (Frisco First United Methodist on Preston) 7:00pm to 8:30pm Tue May 15, 2018 (Frisco LDS Stake Center on El Dorado) Tue June 5, 2018 - (Frisco LDS Stake Center on El Dorado) 9:00am to 10:30am Sat Mar 10, 2018 (LDS Chapel on Coit) Sat Apr 21, 2018 (LDS Chapel on Coit) Sat May 5, 2018 (Frisco LDS Stake Center on El Dorado) Sat May 19, 2018 (Frisco LDS Stake Center on El Dorado) Sat June 2, 2018 (Frisco LDS Stake Center on El Dorado) PLEASE NOTE: AS OF 3/31/2018 ALL SPRING F2F YPT IS SUSPENDED UNTIL THE STATE APPROVES NEW YTP TRAINING MATERIAL
  • 11. Pack 142 Spring Campout Name Who Type Dates Location Costs Pack 142 Pack 142 Spring Campout Bring the whole family! (no pets please) Weekend Overnight # Fri 4/27 4pm – Sun 4/29 12pm Clements / Trevor Rees- Jones Scout Camp TBD – depends on food plan, likely $5 to $10 per person Our spring campout will be held in April at the Clements / Trevor Rees-Jones Scout Camp in Athens, TX. There are wildlife, trails, fishing, rowboats, canoes, bb guns, archery, climbing wall, camp fires, and tons of fun. We may be able to consider a group horse trail ride with enough interest. There is no better option for you to bond with your kids / scouts than at our family campout, held at a first rate facility with more amenities than nearly any state or national park. There is no better option for you to trial camping for the first time than with our experienced and trained pack/den leaders. The pack will be providing Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner on Saturday and Breakfast on Sunday. You should bring a water bottle, snacks, and provide for your own dinner Friday night. FAQ Who is this good for? Yes – please see us if you would be willing to help us with anything – even if it’s just extra chairs for the camp! What do I bring? See packing list on a following slide. Also for this outing, bring fishing gear if you want to go fishing. When I arrive, how do I find you? We have reserved the Armadillo campsite, please see the Clements/Trevor Rees-Jones Campground map later in this material for the location. Or just call/text us when you arrive. How do I get all of my camping gear to the reserved campsite You drive. All campgrounds are vehicle accessible. You will later park in the main lot after dropping off your gear though. What are the activities? We are still finalizing. Archery and BB guns for sure. Is it safe? Yes, it’s a great camp and… there will be first aid/CPR trained staff on site What if the weather is terrible? We will cancel at worse case. Each campout has a leader trained in emergency weather procedures. That said, your car will be close by and permanent buildings are on premise if required. And please bring rain gear / ponchos. See packing list on following slide. Do I need to go through training first? No! We have that covered in the pack leadership. So our little pack will have this entire camp to ourselves? No, actually our District is holding its annual Parent-N-Pal at the camp at the same time (when we booked our spring camp out last May there was no conflict – but bad luck, the district rescheduled and it is what it is). No worries, let the pack leaders know and we will get one of our experienced campers to arrange a 1:1 session either at their house or yours to take a look at camping supplies and put your mind at ease. Or if we get enough interest, we will hold a local intro to camping session on a weeknight or weekend including Camp Clements / Trevor Rees Promotional Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QROOUSRsxVY
  • 12. Medical forms – Parts A & B are required for the Spring Pack Campout A FEW NOTES AND RULES ABOUT THE CAMPOUT: • As a Cub Scout Pack we fall under the BSA (Boy Scouts of America) rules. The pack leaders will enforce the BSA rules to the best of their ability. • Cub Scouts are not allowed to play in the camp fire or with fire. • Alcoholic beverages are not allowed on the campout. • Tobacco products are not allowed on the campout. • Profanity is not allowed in the camp grounds. • Each person attending the campout, whether camping or just coming for the day must complete both Medical Form A & B and turn it in. We will be collecting these at the pack meeting on 4/26/18. This is a BSA requirement for medical emergencies and we are required to collect one for each person. We understand that this is a medical form and will contain some personal information. The forms will be stored in a secure locked location. At the end of the cub scouting year the forms will be properly disposed of. • Medical Forms A, B, & C can be found at this link: • https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/healthsafety/pdf/680-001_abc.pdf • Only parts A and B need be turned in for this camp out

This is a 4.5 hour camp held in late afternoon / early evenings and involves some great activities including archery, BB guns, wood crafts, handicrafts, leather work, nature study, sports, swimming, among others. Parents are welcome to join their scouts for this camp. This is really a neat opportunity for parents to experience day camp and bond in a special way with their kids. In fact, Scouts may offer the only opportunity like this in the entire metroplex. Prior participants use words like “awesome” and “best ever” to describe it. The Iron Horse District does most of the work with this camp. They hold activity areas and do all of the set up and tear down of things. That said, each Den is responsible for providing two parents (aka Adult Leaders in Scout speak) who in turn are responsible for chaperoning the cub scouts in the den from one activity to the next. Dens parents are welcome to rotate in and out of the daily Adult Leader rotation. See training schedule on the following slide. Once trained, the training is good for some time. FAQ Who is this good for? TBD What are the activities? Archery, BB guns, wood crafts, handicrafts, leather work, nature study, sports, swimming, among others. What if the weather is terrible? Please bring rain gear / ponchos if the forecast calls for rain. If severe weather calls for cancellation, you will be notified. Do I need to go through training first? If you can volunteer for your Den as an Adult Leader, then YES, you will need to attend a local Frisco 90 minute training course called Youth Protection. See next slide So our little pack will have this entire camp to ourselves? No, this is ran by the Iron Horse district which is comprised of many Frisco area packs. But this is only for Cub Scouts. Can I drop off my scout for the day camp? Yes – as long as you are not a designated Adult Leader for the day. Please find your Den before leaving your scout at the park.
