This story was written to instill earthquake awareness in children. The story goes that when Carol the rabbit tries to sleep, she feels a jolt and comes out of the house. When he gets out of his house, he sees all the forest animals gathered in an open area. Meanwhile, the wise turtle Toby tells everyone what an earthquake is and what to do when an earthquake happens.
2. It was night time in the Shining Forest. All the animals were sleeping soundly
in their homes and dreaming sweet dreams.
1
3. But Carol the Rabbit couldn't fall asleep, he was tossing and turning on the
bed.
2
4. Knowing that he needs sleep to grow up, Carol the Rabbit decided to count
Sheep and took turns jumping his imaginary sheep over the fence. 1..., 2..., 3..
Then, Carol, the Rabbit noticed his sheep shaking.
3
5. But no! It wasn't the swaying sheep; it was the surroundings. Seeing his lamp
and the books on his bookshelf shaking, Carol the Rabbit remained in bed.
4
6. When the shaking stopped after a few seconds, Carol the Rabbit ran out of his
house. Poor Carol the Rabbit was terrified and his heart was beating pretty
fast too.
5
7. He looked around and saw the other forest animals gathering outside in an
open, empty space.
6
8. Overflowing, Carol went up to them and asked Toby the Turtle, the sage of the
forest, what was going on;
'What are these tremors? What's going on Tobi?"
7
9. Toby the Turtle calmly answered Carol Rabbit's question;
"It's an earthquake, Carol. But don't worry. Look, we're all here and we're safe.
8
10. Carol the rabbit had never heard the word "earthquake" before. After
contemplating what might happen, so he asked Toby;
''Is it an earthquake? Is that the name of a big elephant? Could the big
elephant have suddenly jumped and swayed us?”
9
11. Toby the Turtle decided at that moment that he should tell Carol the Rabbit
and the other animals about the earthquake. So, he gathered them together
and began to explain;
10
12. “Earthquake means the shaking of the ground we are on.
The land we live on is actually made up of many parts. Just like puzzle pieces.
These parts move apart from each other and as if floating on water.
11
13. Sometimes these pieces collide with each other as they float and energy, that
is, these wobbles come out." Toby the Turtle smiled and looked around. "Let's
learn what we need to do in an earthquake now," he said.
12
14. ''After feeling the earthquake, find a safe place, CLOSE above the knees,
protect the head and neck, this is called the triangle of life. HOLD it in a stable
place to avoid falling.
13
15. Stay away from items that are not fixed to the wall and door sills.
Stay where you are in the triangle of life until the earthquake passes. When
the earthquake is over, calmly but quickly, if you are inside, go outside and go
to the assembly areas."
14
16. Carol the Rabbit and the other animals in the forest had listened to Toby the
Turtle with great attention. Now they knew what to do in an earthquake. Toby
the Turtle mentioned that he was going to tell them what to put in the bags that
they should have ready for such natural emergency situations another day.
14
17. After the danger passed, the animals in the forest decided that everyone
should go home. Carol the rabbit had experienced the earthquake for the first
time that evening and learned about it. This information he learned made him
happy and he was not afraid anymore.
15
18. He said, "Now, if there is an
earthquake again, I will protect myself
with the triangle of life!" and smiled as
he happily hopped towards his house.
the end
16
19. What should we do during the earthquake?
16
How should we protect our body?
Where should we go after earthquake?
Let's Talk!
Notes for educators and caregivers: After the reading, please try to answer those questions, talk, and simulate the
life triangle with children. Also in 6th and 8th pages are suitable for painting so if the child prefers, they can paint
those areas.
