This letter provides a strong recommendation for Giancanio Sileo. The letter writer worked with Giancanio in their lab for six months and has collaborated with him on fieldwork and reviewing his PhD work over three years. Giancanio is praised for his skills in structural analysis, subsurface mapping, ability to consider uncertainties, and exploiting new concepts. He is described as goal-driven and easy to work with. The letter writer would have no hesitation hiring Giancanio for a postdoctoral position and encourages contacting them for more information about his abilities.

This letter is in recommendation of Giancanio Sileo. Giancanio worked in my active tectonics lab at the
university of Colorado for six months in 2005 on problems related to his dissertation research. I have also
reviewed his Phd work and have undertaken fieldwork in the southern Alps with him over a period of
three years.
Giancanio is a talented young geoscientist, computer scientist and researcher with well-developed skills in
structural analysis and subsurface mapping using oil industry seismic reflection data and boreholes.
While Giancanio was in my lab, he moved rapidly through a number of difficult problems that required
an ability to think critically, develop multiple working hypotheses and consider uncertainties in different
datasets. he has a very well-developed knowledge of geoscience and GIS software and used this to map
subtle active folds in the Po Plain. Perhaps more importantly, Giancanio was quick to exploit new
concepts and apply it to his work. I value geoscientists who seek to define the edges of their knowledge
base and work to expand it – giancanio is this sort of individual and has been a real asset to my research
group. Giancanio has also followed through on his phd research, submitting papers to peer reviewed
journals in a timely fashion. Giancanio is also very easy to work with in a group setting and possesses a
pleasant personality in addition to his scientific skills and strong work ethic. He is also goal driven, and
sets schedules for completing tasks and sticks to them, regardless of distractions.
Were Giancanio to apply for a postdoctoral position in my group, I would have no reservations about
hiring him immediately. Please feel free to contact me regarding Giancanio’s abilities and other
attributes, should they be required.
Sincerely
