There are three primary types of tectonic plate boundaries: divergent boundaries, convergent boundaries, and transform boundaries. At divergent boundaries, plates pull apart and new crust is created, allowing oceans to form. Convergent boundaries occur when plates collide and one slides under the other, often forming mountains and volcanoes. Transform boundaries exist where plates slide past each other horizontally, such as the San Andreas Fault in California.
