3. Land – A Resource
Land is not only a basic resource but also a cherished
asset. It has to be utilized in accordance with its
suitability and ecological capabilities, which depend
on geological and biological factors. However, if
unbearable pressures such as of an explosively
growing population are brought to bear on the land
and to overuse it and over-exploit its limited
resources, the ecological balance is upset.
Forgetting responsibility to the posterity, and
having learnt no lessons from the consequences of
mismanagement of land by their forebears in
ancient Phoenicia, Babylonia, Palestine and Sindhu-
Saraswati valleys, the people have been abusing the
finite resources including the land.

4. Land – A Resource
There should be appropriate landuse planning
based on optimal use of lad in accordance with
its suitability and capability.
Hill-lands, for example, if put largely under forests,
would serve as a source of fuel, fodder and
timber, besides recharging the groundwater and
providing scope for cattle farming.
Land should be managed as to satisfy at least the
basic needs of man – food production, shelter,
recreation, communication, transportation, etc.
