Más adelante comenzaron a recaudarse metales como el oro, la plata y el cobre. Hoy en día se utiliza el pago con monedas y billetes.
Con los recursos recaudados se construyen y se mantienen los bienes públicos como las escuelas, parques, hospitales, calles y carreteras; Tambien permite el pago de los servicios públicos y servicios como el Sistema de atención a emergencias (911), los acueductos y el transporte público.

5. Cronología de los impuestos
Egipto:
La civilización del Antiguo Egipto era muy
grande y poderosa. Las personas debían
pagar los impuestos al Faraón, quien tenía
mando total sobre el pueblo, con su trabajo
o bienes.
6. Grecia:
En tiempos de Guerra los atenienses
creaban un impuesto conocido como
eisfora, que era usado para pagar gastos
especiales de guerra.
Atenas imponía un impuesto mensual de
censo a los extranjeros, gente que no
tenían madre y padre atenienses- de un
dracma para hombres y medio dracma
para mujeres. El impuesto era llamado
metoikion
7. Imperio Romano:
Los primeros impuestos en Roma fueron
derechos de aduana de importación y
exportación llamados portoria.
Los romanos al igual que civilizaciones que
le precedieron, recaudaban impuestos que
eran aplicados a: la tierra, las herencias,
importación y exportación, los esclavos,
entre otros.
Estos tributos eran pagados con bienes y
servicios o con monedas.
8. Gran Bretaña:
Cuando cayó Roma, los reyes sajones
impusieron impuestos, conocidos como
Danegeld, sobre tierras y
propiedades. Los reyes impusieron
asimismo sustanciales derechos de
aduana.
9. América Colonial:
Los colonos pagaban impuestos
según la Ley de Melados, que fue
modificada en 1764 para incluir
derechos de importación sobre
melados extranjeros, azúcar, vino, y
otros artículos. La nueva legislación fue
conocida como Ley del Azúcar.
