The document discusses the pros and cons of keeping orcas in captivity. Some pros are that it can educate people about orcas and provide jobs. However, the cons outweigh these. Orcas have much shorter lifespans in captivity of around 15 years compared to 80 years in the wild. They also display signs of depression and have even committed suicide in captivity. Moreover, orcas are highly intelligent and need more stimulation and space than captivity provides.

1. SeaWorld Orcas
in Captivity
PROS
CONS
- Educational, can teach children about the animals
- Are fun to look at, difficult to see in the wild so the fact that
they’re in captivity means more people can see them
- Brings in a lot of money for the aquariums as they are a
popular attraction
- Provides a variety of jobs like zookeepers, janitors, breeders,
trainers etc
- Orcas have a much shorter life span in captivity, they have an
average age of 15 at SeaWorld but can live past 80 in the wild.
- They’re shown to be unhappy in captivity, often showing signs
of depression and in some cases even committing suicide by
hitting their head against the walls.
- Orcas are stolen from there homes and forced to be in shows.
This is traumatizing for the family of orcas and the one taken,
and can usually result in multiple Orca deaths.
- Orcas are considered to have an intelligence level close to
humans. They are very sentient and aware, meaning they
need lots of enrichment that a tank won’t provide. They can
travel up to 100 miles in one day, no tanks aren’t even 1 mile
across. This is like a human living in a bathtub all of their life.
VISUAL
AUDIO
- The video will be made
entirely of found footage,
this could be from clips on
YouTube or from a
Documentary like
‘Blackfish’ if it’s able to be
used as free use.
- The main audio will be a speech prepared and drafted by me,
it will be entirely scripted to avoid stutters or going off track.
Everything will be precise and to the point.
- The speech itself will be recorded in high quality using a sound
recorder or microphone and ovelayed over the found footage,
this will help portray a story and get across vital information.
- For some of the found footage I will leave a bit of audio in if it
seems important or will add to the overall vibe of the video. I
will do this in places where the speech audio pauses for effect.
- In terms of music, I will include a somber soundtrack that is
sad but also rather sinister, giving the video a lonely feel which
reflects the Orcas. This will only be played during the cons
portion however, as a brighter soundtrack will be played for
pros in order to provide a clear contrast in tone.
- These clips will demonstrate some benefits, but
mostly cons of keeping Orcas in activity, as this video
will be more about why it’s a bad thing, or at least
setting up to a whole video about that like some kind
of introduction.
- I will also use overlays to add style to the video, almost giving it a
sinister like vibe as the topic is meant to be quite sad and almost
scary for the Orcas.
- Furthermore, I will also use text to emphasize certain points of the
speech, like questions or statistics.
- If possible I would like to film some interviews and use them in the
product to emphasize my points and show how others have the
same opinions. The people interviewed would be from a same age
demographic as my audience, in order to make it relatable.
