2. Concept
A green library may be a library that uses latest
and cutting edge technology in designing a
library building and providing services to its
users in eco friendly environment.
The Concept “Green Libraries” emerged in the
early 90s.
Green is about sustainability. Going green is
making choices that protect, preserve and
replenish the Earth’s resources.
3. WHY THE LIBRARY?
❖ Unique connection with the people/community
❖ Ability to communicate with local businesses
❖ Libraries serve people who can directly affect change
▪ Families
▪ Teachers
▪ Authors
▪ Business people
Libraries are strong participants in sustainable solutions
5. Green Movement
The human beings began to change the
environment to suit their own requirements.
The modern Green movement began after 1960 as
a result of industrial age due to the increasing
levels of smoke, pollution in the atmosphere and
growing waste.
6. Green Movement continue…
As a result of this in 1972, under the leadership of
UNO, the United Nations Conference on the Human
Environment commenced in Stockholm, Sweden.
Their main motive was to create awareness
towards environment.

Program - 1972
In 1972, UNEP was established the terms
‘eco development’ is coined.
In 1987, the United Nations World Commission on
Environment and Development released the
Brundtland report which gave the most widely
recognised definitions of sustainable
development.
8. United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change
The UNFCCC is an international environmental treaty
addressing climate change, negotiated and signed by
154 states at the United Nations Conference on
Environment and Development, informally known as
the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro from 3 to 14
June 1992.
The publication of this convention is known as Earth
Charter.
The government of all countries have introduced
various policies and plans on the basis of this Earth
Charter.
9. Definition
The California Integrated Waste Management Board
defines Green Building as – “A structure that is
designed, built, renovated, operated or reused in an
ecological and resource – efficient manner.”
A library designed to minimize negative impact on the
natural environment and maximize indoor
environmental quality by means of careful site
selection, use of natural construction materials and
biodegradable products, conservation of resources
(water, energy, paper), and also responsible for the
waste disposal (recycling, etc). _ ODLIS-2016 (Online
Dictionary for Library and Information Science)
Sustainable Library is frequently used to describe
Green Library.
10. Definition
Going Green means to “pursue knowledge and
practices that can lead to more environmental
friendly and ecologically responsible decisions and
lifestyles, which can help protect the environment
and sustain its natural resources for current and
future generations” (Going Green, 2016).

One has to plan according to the LEED guidelines.
12. Role of The International
Organization for Standardization
Developed ISO 14020 and ISO 14024 to establish
principles and procedures for environmental
labels.
Which should be followed by eco-labellers for the
certificate of declarations.
‘Eco-friendly’ products/practices/services are
designed to minimize the bad effect on the
ecological system during its manufacturing or
production.
13. IFLA Green Library Award
The IFLA Green Library Award was established in
2016 by Environmental Sustainability and
Libraries Special Interest Group (ENSULIB - SIG).
The award was sponsored by De Gruyter publishing
Company.
The award is 500 Euros for the first place
winner.

Objectives of the IFLA Green Library Award
are:
To reward the best Green Library submission
that communicates the library’s commitment to
environmental sustainability;
To create awareness of libraries’ social
responsibility and leadership in environmental
education.

In collaboration with USGBC - (United States Green
Building Council) Indian Green Building Council
carries out the activities in India.
LEED has also established its hubs in different
countries to provide rating certifications locally; in
India it is known as LEED-India.
In India another Green building rating system known
as Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment
(GRIHA) initiated by Tata Energy and Research
Institute, New Delhi – TERI. It also carried out Green
Building Movement in India.

51. Conclusion:
❖ Librarian should always make efforts to promote green library
movements by using different online tools like social media.
❖ The Librarian constantly willing to work under the Eco-library system
and identify those people who are willing to work in this environment.
And also promote green library tools, techniques to encourage others.
❖ A Librarian can encourage other librarians towards green library by
discussion, seminar, and conferences.
❖ The green librarian’s role is most dynamic; he is also called as eco
librarian because he has to handle the budgets to support the
organizations.
52. Conclusion:
❖ Use wooden furniture and material because these are bio
degradable materials.
❖ Paper Insulation is also an ultimate trick to make environment
friendly building. It is made from newspaper and cardboard
which are recyclable. Also it protects wall from fire and insects.
❖ Library can use wool brick instead of burnt brick. Solar tiles or
panel can be used for roof.
❖ More and more use of bamboo by replacing steel and rooftop
planting can be a good idea.
