3. Balfron House Campsie Fells
Series 6 Episode 3
‘The contemporary cedar clad house’
‘Low-tech, super-insulated, airtight structure
that is a perfect example of how we might
live in the future. It has its own language but
it doesn't shout and there is no sense of
pastiche or reproduction either.
Architecturally it's everything I value in a
building: a sense of space, its positioning in
the landscape, and a playful and well-
crafted design’. Kevin McCloud

Balornock Bowling Club
Glasgow
‘The clubhouse is a simple long building which matches the length of the green along its west side. Raised
up above the green on the existing banked ground with its major spaces over looking the green.’

‘The building is kept low to avoid excessive overshadowing of the green and some shelter and outdoor
space is provided beneath the eaves, around the entrance and at the south end towards the park for people
to take a drink outside in good weather.’
Chris Platt - Head and Professor of Architecture, Mackintosh School of Architecture

Lochgilphead, Argyll
‘A remotely situated farm steading where
traditional stone outbuildings required

company.’

10. Glenboig Cottage
Fintry Hills Stirlingshire
The site lies down a small country
lane between Fintry and Balfron, a
gently rolling landscape seen
against the darker backdrop of the
Campsie Fells.
The building brief, although for one
house, required accommodation of
two independent households within
and the new building is devised as
a longhouse, in keeping with
indigenous rural forms.

Braefoot House
Dumgoyne Glasgow
‘Extension of a two storey artisan’s cottage
dating from the 19th century of pavilion
form, i.e. a form which had some degree of
visual autonomy was chosen because it
allowed the existing building to retain its
strong presence and sit comfortably within a
new composition of house and extension
creating a parti of ‘long and low’ contrasting
with ‘compact and tall’.
The architectural character is crisp and
contrasts with the soft nature of the existing
building. The extension sings in harmony
rather than in unison with the old.
