1. SEEKING A SIGN
INSTEAD OF SEEKING JESUS
MATTHEW 12:38-42

2. “AN EVIL AND ADULTEROUS GENERATION SEEKS
AFTER A SIGN”
• Jesus just did a sign… He cast out a demon from a man. (Matt. 12:22)
• Jesus accused them of their sin, demanding that they repent when the
Holy Spirit comes. (Matt 12:31)
• Then they ask for a sign – (Matt. 12:38)
• Probably in an attempt to delay or distract their heart from accepting the
truth.
• “Always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” - 2
Tim. 3:7
• As long as we keep ourselves in the dark, we do not have to submit to
the truth.
• John 3:19-21
• We tell people we are “still just learning”, for others to accept our life
in darkness.

3. NINEVEH WILL RISE UP IN JUDGEMENT AGAINST US
• “They repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a
greater than Jonah is here.” (Matt. 12:41)
• Jonah said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be
overthrown!” (Jonah 3:2)
• “Then God saw their works, that they turned from their
evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had
said He would bring upon them, He did not do it.” (Jonah
3:10)
• 2 Corinthians 11:3 - But I fear, lest somehow, as the
serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may
be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

4. THE QUEEN OF THE SOUTH WILL RISE UP IN
JUDGEMENT AGAINST UP
• 1 Kings 10:1-3,9
• The Queen of Sheba probably traveled around 1400 miles to meet
Solomon.
• That is like walking to Denver, Colorado.
• It probably took her 6 months
• Matthew 12:42 - “The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment
with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of
the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than
Solomon is here.”

5. THE SIGN OF JONAH
• Matthew 12
• 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly
of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and
three nights in the heart of the earth.
• Mark 16:6
• 6 But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus
of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen! He is not here.
See the place where they laid Him.

6. 1 CORINTHIANS 1:22-34
• 22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after
wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a
stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24 but to
those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the
power of God and the wisdom of God.
