TORONTO PARKS & TRAILS WAYFINDING INTERACTIVE DESIGN
We use wayfinding everyday of lives, but we are unaware
of how important it really is, until we rely on the
infrastructure that has been put in place to guide us.
Through our travels we often depend on wayfinding to get
us from Point A to Point B successfully, without frustration,
anxiety or disorientation.
To date, each park has been operated in isolation and so
there has been a lack of consistency in terms of design,
look and feel. I am looking at how we can transform these
spaces in to places where people connect with the parks
and interact with each other.
Wayfinding uses symbols and text to clearly illustrate and
explain a path to find your way to your destination.
Symbols they're simplified messages powerful images,
without the use of words. The text used in way finding is
clear, clean and legible.
In my design, I used two main colors. This the color of Oriole bird.
These colors have good contrast and for that they are easy to see
from afar. Signs and totems standing on the street, where at
different times have different lighting and it is very important to
have a strict contrast images and inscriptions that they could be
well visible from afar.
Figures for the Totems/Monoliths have volume because I create a design
for the park, where people can relax and walk, and where they come with
their children and want to feel not in the standard atmosphere, to not feel
the routine life or formal atmosphere as at work.
Totem/Monolith signs can be illuminated with a wide range of IP Rated LED
products from LED Light panels to Light box modules, although if you
require the signs to be externally illuminated, LED ground lights for flood
lighting can be supplied.
The materials mentioned below are standard items although can
manufacture totems/monoliths in a variety of materials should your job
require them. Monolith and totem signage can be manufactured in a variety
of materials: from strong steel aluminium frames to panels made of Dibond,
Perspex or Flexiface, all with acrylic lettering.
Material: Aluminium, Stainless Steel
Finish: Painted to RAL, Satin Brushed, Polished and Chemically Treated
Illumination: Internal LED Lighting - Modules, LED Light Panels, LED
Flexible Strips, LED Light box units
External LED Lighting - LED Up lighters and Ground lights
Fluorescent tubes and gear
Installation: Mild Steel Ground Cages
The font I chose is not strict, but at the same time clear enough,
readable and enjoyable for a man who came to the park to relax.

Toronto has a profusion of formal and informal signage and
information systems. From humble road signs to interactive
booths, all of these contribute to people’s understanding of
the city with varying levels of success. The core objective of this
Toronto Parks & Trails Wayfinding project is to produce a
signage and information system that is consistent, accessible
and predictable. It is an opportunity to reduce visual clutter in
parks, and encourage the use and discovery of parks and
ravines by residents and visitors. A coherent wayfinding system
also aligns with the City of Toronto’s Walking Strategy which
“aims to create an environment where walking is an appealing,
convenient, safe and stimulating experience for residents and
visitors”.
