Satchel Paige – probably the
greatest pitcher in history. What
he could have shown against the
MLB in his prime!

6. What a squad! This team would rake at
the plate and miss a ton of bats on the
mound. Domination of the strike zone is
a good place to start, and the defense
isn’t too shabby either. What a fantastic
player pool. These were (and for some,
continue to be) extraordinary players.
But I’d posit that the biggest strength of
this club would be the drive, heart,
leadership, and fortitude of each person
on this roster. Talent alone doesn’t make
you a generational ballplayer.
We can factor in WAR (Wins Above
Replacement, a stat used to measure a
player's effectiveness against others),
adjust for era, talk about ballparks, dead
balls, steroids, or gambling when
comparing Mays to Mantle, for example.
All these players were incredibly skilled.

7. But to overcome life’s inherent
obstacles, (especially when that
obstacle is skin color) to not only excel
in the major leagues but to become a
Hall of Famer (or at least worthy of
Cooperstown consideration), it is a
testament not only to true talent, but to
a remarkably strong human character as
well. We would all like to believe the
Major Leagues have been and continue
to function as a level playing field.
We’d like to believe that the historical
performances of each player,
particularly when compared to others at
their respective positions, is for the
most part an apples-to-apples
comparison, with various adjustments
for era.

8. Yet that simply cannot be. Just
thinking about institutional
injustices that have existed for
centuries puts the whole concept
of ranking players in perspective.
How do we account for the
systemic racism that Black and
Brown ballplayers have navigated
and continue to navigate each
waking moment of their lives?
When considering that it heightens
my appreciation for the remarkable
accomplishments of the vast
majority of this group and would
serve to take this team to special
places.

12. Honestly, I always pulled for and
felt more connected to the
"good" players rather than
superstars. John Olerud for
example was one of my favorite
players growing up. But I'll go
with Pedro Martinez since I saw
him play and he is so special for
so many reasons. A true baseball
treasure.

Probably Ted Williams. It's
always incredible to me that he
had one of the best careers of
any player ever despite missing
three seasons in the middle of
his prime.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE
PLAYER ON THIS LIST?
I'd say the bench. I made sure to
put a few players with managerial
experience on there in case the
group needs some guidance.

Keeping Carl Yastrzemski

hardest cut for most people.
The closest race was at
catcher, where Yogi Berra
edged Johnny Bench by just
one percentage point.
Ted Williams and Pedro
Martinez led the list for your

votes for Satchel Paige
