as irritability.
Stimulus -is any change in the environment to which organisms responds.
Response-any behavior of a living organism that results from an external or internal

11. Neuron comprises of dendrite, axon and cell
body. Dendrites receives messages from the
surrounding and sends it to the cell body. Cell
body consists of nucleus, mitochondria and other
organelles. Axon transmits the message away
from the cell body and pass it to the the next
receiving neuron.
Synapse is the gap between nerve ending of one
neuron and dendrites of another. At synapse, the
electrical impulse generated at dendrites of a
neuron is passed on to dendrite of another
neuron in the form of chemicals by on ending of
the first neuron

Reflex action is the extremely quick, automatic,
sudden action in response to something in the
environment.
Example- Immediately pulling back of fingers after
touching a hot plate.
17. Reflex arc:
“The reflex arc is the nerve pathway that is followed
by reflex action.”
An example of the reflex arc is it happens when we
accidentally touch something hot. The change in
temperature is detected by the receptor first. Then
electrical impulses are sent to relay neuron which is
located in the spinal cord.
Sensory neurons are connected to motor neurons by
sensory neurons. An effector receives electrical
impulses through the motor neuron. A response is
produced by the effector.

26. Forebrain – Largest part of the brain
It is the anterior part of the brain. The forebrain parts include:
1.Cerebrum
2.Diencephalon –a)Thalamus b)Hypothalamus
Forebrain Function:
It is the main thinking part of the brain and controls the voluntary
actions. The forebrain processes sensory information that is
collected from the various sense organs such as ears, eyes, nose,
tongue, skin. Controls the reproductive functions,
body temperature, emotions, hunger and sleep.
28. Mid Brain :
It connects the fore-brain with the hind-brain. It is the portion of
the central nervous system associated with vision, hearing, motor
control, sleep/wake, alertness, and temperature regulation.
Hind brain:
1)Cerebellum
2)Pons
3)Medulla oblangata

29. Hind brain:
Cerebellum: receives information from the sensory systems,
the spinal cord and other parts of the brain and regulates the motor
movements. It controls the voluntary movements such as posture,
balance, coordination, and speech to maintain a smooth and
balanced muscular activity.
Pons: serves as a communication medium between the two
hemispheres of the brain. It deals with important functions of the
body named as eye movement, respiration, sleep, swallowing,
hearing and bladder control.
Medulla oblangata- controls involuntary actions
Eg; blood pressure , salivation, vomiting, Digestion, Excretion etc
31. Organs Functions
Hypothalamus Controls body temperature , Maintain water balance , Controls urge of
eating, drinking ,Controls pituitary gland
Thalamus Send sensory information to cerebrum
Cerebrum It is the main thinking part of brain. It is responsible for reasoning,
speech intelligence, sight, hearing and usage of information controls
and coordinates different muscular actions ,
Pons It control breathing rate ,It controls facial expression, mastication of
food etc.
Cerebellum It maintains posture and equilibrium of the body during various
activities such as walking, drinking, riding etc,
Medulla
oblongata
It controls involuntary actions such as breathing, blood pressure (BP)
movement of alimentary canal etc.
It regulates reflex responses like salivation and vomiting

When we touch Mimosa pudica (touch me not ), our touch acts as

50. Plant hormones or Phytohormones:
Plants need sunlight, water, oxygen, minerals for their growth
and development. These are external factors. Apart from these,
there are some intrinsic factors that regulate the growth and
development of plants. These are called plant hormones
or “Phytohormones”.
Based on their action, plant hormones are categorised into two
categories:
1.Plant Growth Promoters – Auxins, Gibberllins, Cytokinine
2.Plant Growth Inhibitors – Abscisic acid, Ethylene

Auxins:When a plant detect light, auxin hormone is synthesised at the
shoot tip, help the cells to grow longer. This concentration
of auxin stimulate the cells to grow longer on the side of shoot which is
away from light. Thus plant appear to bend towards light. It promotes
stem, fruit, growth, regulates tropism.

Gibberellins are plant growth regulators that facilitate cell

major roles in germination, elongation of the stem, fruit

Cytokinins are capable of stimulating cell division along with auxins.
They promote cell elongation.
They have ability to delay the process of ageing in leaves.
Cytokinins are most effective in breaking dormancy of buds and seeds.
54. ಅಬಿಾಸಿಕ್ ಆಮಾ / Abscisic acid

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a plant hormone. ABA functions in many
plant developmental processes, including seed and bud

56. Plant hormones Functons
Auxins It helps in the elongation of cells.
It helps in the bending of stem towards light source.
Gibberellins It helps in the growth of the stem and flower
Cytokinins It promotes cell division
It helps in rapid cell division in fruits & seeds.
It helps in opening of stomata during day time
Abscissic acid It inhibits the growth of plant. It is responsible for
wilting of leaves ,It helps in the closing of stomata
during night.

Hormones are the chemicals secreted by endocrine glands in one part of

Endocrine glands in human beings are Pitutary gland, Thyroid gland,

61. Pitutary gland
The Pituitary gland, also known as the hypophysis, is a pea-sized
endocrine gland situated at the base of our brain. It is often referred to
as the ‘Master Gland’ because it produces some of the important
hormones in the body.
The pituitary gland is divided into two parts, also called lobes:
1.Anterior pituitary
2.Posterior pituitary
63. Pitutary gland
➢Pitutary gland secrets Growth hormone,
it is Responsible for the growth and
repair of all cells in the body.
➢Growth hormone secreted by the
pituitary gland is responsible for
dwarfism or shortness. When pituitary
produces an insufficient amount of
growth hormone, it retards the height of
an individual.
➢Gigantism is the outcome of the excess
secretion of growth hormone by the
pituitary.
65. Thyroid gland
➢The thyroid gland is a ductless endocrine gland
situated in the anterior/front portion of the neck. It
roughly resembles the shape of a butterfly. It is also
one of the largest endocrine glands, This gland has
two lobes on either side of the trachea.
➢Thyroid gland secretes Thyroxine hormone.
➢Function- Regulation of metabolism of carbohydrates,
fats and proteins, helps in the development of mental
and physical growth.
➢Iodine deficiency is the most common cause of goiter.
The body needs iodine to produce thyroid hormone. If
you do not have enough iodine in your diet, the
thyroid gets larger in size.
67. Adrenal gland
➢The Adrenal Glands are found on top of each kidney,
the right gland is pyramidal in shape and the left
gland is semilunar in shape.
➢Adrenal medulla secretes Adrenaline hormone
➢The adrenal glands help in metabolism, regulates
blood pressure, and is responsible for the fight or
flight response.
➢Adrenaline hormone is secreted during the time of
stress or emergency by the adrenal medulla and is
hence often referred to as the emergency hormone.
➢Adrenaline hormone is also known as 3F hormone
Fight, Fright, Flight
69. Pancreas(Islets of Langerhans)
➢The islets of Langerhans are a cluster of cells within the pancreas.
➢The islets of Langerhans are responsible for the
endocrine function of the pancreas. Each islet contains beta, alpha,
and delta cells that are responsible for the secretion of pancreatic
hormones. Beta cells secrete insulin, a well-characterized hormone
that plays an important role in regulating glucose metabolism.
➢ Diabetes Mellitus – It is the condition where the pancreas gland
does not generate enough insulin required by the body to regulate
glucose metabolism.
