PROGRAM---YPP
YPP
 The UN Young Professionals Program (YPP) is a UN scheme
for talented, qualified youths to start a career as an
international civil servant. It consists of an entrance
examination and Interview.
 YPP examination is held once a year in different subjects,
depending on the needs of the UN. YPP is open to nationals of
participating countries. The list of participating countries varies
from year to year.
 The notification comes in June each year. Maximum age limit
is 32. Minimum qualification is Graduation. Once qualified, can
be appointed at Professional 2 level.

existence of any dependants, is the same throughout

Joint Staff Pension Fund. A
compulsory contribution will be
deducted from your monthly
salary.
At some duty stations, a hardship
allowance linked to living and
working conditions is paid and
where there are restrictions on
bringing family members, a non-
family hardship allowance is also
paid.
Hazard pay and rest and
recuperation break when you
serve in locations where the
conditions are particularly
hazardous, stressful and
difficult.

HOLIDAYS & LEAVE
Depending on your type of contract, you will be entitled to 18 days
to 30 days of vacation per year. In addition, the United Nations also
observes 10 paid holidays per year; these differ from duty station to
duty station.
You might also be eligible for home leave travel to renew your
social, cultural and family ties in your home country; frequency
depends on the duty station you are assigned to.

ASSESSMENT EXERCISE
• The assessment exercises might include a written exam,
simulation exercise, case study, or other appropriate evaluation
mechanism. You will be informed in advance of the time, type,
and length of the assessment. If, based on the result of the
assessment, you are short-listed for a competency-based
interview, you will be informed accordingly.
• If you are not short-listed for the competency-based interview,
you will be so informed at the appropriate time. Please note,
however, that the type and frequency of correspondence with
individual candidates may vary throughout the application.

• The competency-based interview may take place either, video
conference, or in person. You will be notified in advance of the
time, duration and means and/or place of the interview. During the
interview, your combination of skills, attributes and behaviours that
are directly related to your successful performance on the job will
be assessed.
• Normally the duration is about 45 minutes.
• 3 to 5 professionals of UN will interview the candidate.

interviews are based on the concept that past behavior and experience is the best indicator of future performance. In other words, your
history tells a story about you: your talents, skills, abilities, knowledge and actual experience in handling a variety of situations.
• Competency interviewing questions can look like this:
• Tell us about a situation when you went above and beyond your manager's expectations.
• Give an example of a time when you used your problem solving abilities to resolve an issue?
• Tell us about a time where you had a number of demands being made on you at the same time? How did you handle it?
• Useful tips for your interview:
1. Prepare a wide range of brief real life stories about your accomplishments. Be aware of the specific skills each story illustrates and
remember to include the positive outcome or lesson learned from each experience.
2. Be ready to discuss your strengths and your ability to learn from past experiences. Also think about how you could contribute to the work of
the United Nations and to the specific position you are applying for.
3. Review the competencies mentioned in the job opening. These will be probed in your interview, so your stories should show your skill in
these competency areas.
4. You should be prepared to address positive results and achievements using these competencies and also challenges you have had in
each of these areas.
5. The structure of your answer should be: Situation, Action, Result.
6. Share information you feel is appropriate and relevant.
7. Listen to the question carefully. Keep to the point. Be as specific as possible.
8. Do some research on competency, or behavior based interviews. There is a lot of material available about preparing for such an interview
structure.
9. Learn as much as you can about the Department and Office you are applying to and the work it does.
10. Practice, practice, practice.

COMPETENCY BASED INTERVIEW
CONSULTANTS
• The United Nations engages experts under individual contracts to
work on projects either as a consultant or an individual contractor.
• A consultant is a recognized authority or specialist in a specific
field, engaged by the Organization in an advisory or consultative
capacity. The functions of a consultant are results-oriented and
normally involve analysing problems, directing seminars or training
courses, preparing documents or writing reports on matters within
their area of expertise.
• There is no age limit for applying, except that one should be
functionally capable to perform the duties.
• An individual contractor is engaged by the Organization to provide
expertise, skills or knowledge for the performance of a specific task
or piece of work. The assignment may involve full-time or part-
time functions similar to those of staff members.

  • 30. YPP  The UN Young Professionals Program (YPP) is a UN scheme for talented, qualified youths to start a career as an international civil servant. It consists of an entrance examination and Interview.  YPP examination is held once a year in different subjects, depending on the needs of the UN. YPP is open to nationals of participating countries. The list of participating countries varies from year to year.  The notification comes in June each year. Maximum age limit is 32. Minimum qualification is Graduation. Once qualified, can be appointed at Professional 2 level.

  • 37. Health Insurance You will be eligible to participate in one of the United Nations-sponsored medical insurance plans. The monthly premiums are co-shared by yourself and the Organization. Retirement Pension If you have an appointment of six months or more or complete six months of service without an interruption you become a participant in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund. A compulsory contribution will be deducted from your monthly salary. At some duty stations, a hardship allowance linked to living and working conditions is paid and where there are restrictions on bringing family members, a non- family hardship allowance is also paid.
