The document summarizes the results of a European project that developed the first ranking of multinational companies based on their transparency and social responsibility. It found that only 10% of the 100 companies contacted provided responses. Based on publicly available information, it compiled transparency indexes and identified the top 10 most transparent companies. The top company was Schneider Electric for its disclosure of sustainability reports and data. The project aims to get more companies to participate voluntarily in the ranking to improve transparency standards over time.

Press release
Open Corporation Ranking, Top Ten most transparent companies
“If only 10 out of 100 companies we contacted actually answer, we have
a problem!” It was stated by Gabriele Guglielmi, Project Coordinator of the
European Project: Open EWC (European Works Councils), a study aimed at
developing the first ranking of multinational companies, based on their care for
certain social and union issues: respect of workers’ rights, attention to diversity;
transparency and accessibility of data and information, sustainability including
the environmental one
“Even so” states Davide Dazzi, coordinator of the research team, “we are able to
publish a list of the top ten most transparent companies. This was possible
because, to compare the declarations with the behaviours, the project team has
prepared a data gathering sheet, and between December 2016 and February
2017 we have monitored 100 companies. Based on the publicly available
information: e.g. company website, sustainability balance, we have then
proceeded to precompile the questionnaire. Thanks to this information we
developed:
• Quantitative data: the transparency index of the TNC (Transnational
company), available on www.opencorporation.org, by Open Polis, includes
the ranking of the first 100 companies;
• Qualitative data deriving from the typology of surveyed data, to be
published at the press release in Budapest the next 6th
of april, a first
test of the final Open Corporation Ranking.

The analysis, the answers received, the results gathered, the lists and rankings
that, even though they don’t show a definitive result, at least do show the
prevalent tendencies, are overlapping during this first test phase, and will have a
dual value when the first Open Corporation ranking will be published in
autumn 2017:
- Allow the project staff to stabilize process and methodology, also
thanks to the first answers received by the companies;
- Maintain a window open that will allow companies that still haven’t
done so to answer, and allow the rest to improve their performance.
The representatives of these one hundred companies, as those of the
others that will be gradually added by the project staff or that will offer
themselves volunteers to participate in the ranking, from the CEO to the
CSR manager, the HR manager or the Communication one, still have the
opportunity to showcase what their company is doing in terms of:
respecting workers’ rights, attention to diversity, sustainability and
transparency and accessibility of data and information.

Brief notes on platform functioning
The Open Corporation web platform is the centre for gathering and spreading information on
the project. Corporations that accept the transparency challenge may access a
reserved area on the site and insert data regarding their company by simply
answering the online questionnaire. Gathered data both autonomously by researchers
contrinuting to the project and those given by the companies, will then be published in a
traditional form (on the dedicated section of the site) and made available as open data. The
current online version corresponds to the first development phase of the methodology and a
first core of gathered data and documents (see sections “methodology”, “toolkit”, “open
data” and “documents”). During the next months other implementations will follow,
corresponding to the future developments of the project, up until the final stable version by
the end of 2017.
