Title
Teacher’s Asynchronous Engagement in an Online Distance Learning
in Higher Education
Brief Description of Work
Most higher education institutions in the Philippines shifted to online
distance learning because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The global
health crisis has impacted various sectors, including the education
sector. However, that is not a hindrance to stopping achieving our
goals; online distance learning is a go-to method of pursuing education
for teachers and learners. This paper aims to measure teachers'
asynchronous engagement during online distance teaching.
Specifically, it seeks to profile teachers' asynchronous engagement in
a learning management system, the utilization of resources and
activities, and the engagement challenges they encounter in learning
practices. Profiling and utilization levels were measured using the
LMS logs for the second semester school year 2020-2021 of a private
university in the Philippines. Challenges were determined using a
focus-group discussion among selected senior high school and tertiary
teachers. The study reveals that the average number of visits per
virtual classroom per visit is 621, and the longest time spent per
college in a virtual class is 37 hours. "File" LMS resource is the most
utilized, and "assignment" is the most utilized LMS activity. Further,
technology unfamiliarity, pedagogical, disengagement, and
preparation are the top challenges experienced by the teacher-
respondents. It is concluded that the degree of
asynchronous engagement among the teachers is varied. Teachers are
challenged but able to cope with the egagenemtn challenges through
upskilling. It is recommended that upskilling activities, workshops,
and training must emphasize assessment and feedback management.

Free Computer Education among Senior Citizens: A Service-
Learning in an Immersion Class in Senior High School. 8th
Asia-Pacific Regional Virtual Conference on Service-Learning
Brief Description of Paper
The Dr. Mariano Lao Innovation, Creation, and
Invention Laboratory of Silliman University offers free
computer education to senior citizens and retirees. The training
aims to provide need-based computer skills training for retirees
and senior citizens. It is conducted every weekend, with 25
senior citizens. The training is delivered every Saturday, 8:00
am to 12:00 noon, for three months. The first batch was
launched in January 2019. STEAM senior high school students
serve as training assistants as part of their 80-hour immersion
requirement, a service-learning (S-L) integration in subject
Inquiries, Investigation and Immersion.
This paper presents the S-L integration practices in the
work immersion class in the senior high school of Silliman
University, Dumaguete City. Specifically, this paper describes
S-L's implementation processes as a teaching strategy in
achieving internship deliverables among senior high school
students. As an instructional strategy, each intern must assist
one senior citizen in learning the basics of computers. Likewise,
this paper presents the use of web blogs as a platform for
student's reflection. The students, as service providers, were
rated by their respective supervisors. Students who were
involved in the program said that the program is challenging yet
fulfilling. The senior citizens, as learners, are satisfied with the
assistance provided by the students. It is recommended that
actual internship hours be increased to give ample time in the
preparation and "after-training" assistance among the senior
citizens.

Title How employers protect data and privacy?
Measuring Trust in the Digital World
Brief Description of Paper
Protecting data and privacy is among the critical aspects of
today's data-driven workplaces. It challenges many
organizations to gain trust and confidence among their
employees and workers. This paper is aimed at determining
how employers protect data and privacy. Specifically, this
article presents the employee's trust level in how organizations
safeguard data and privacy in the workplace. It also shows the
relationships between the trust level and the respondents' socio-
demographics, employment, and technological profile. A total
of 4843 were analyzed from 36 countries. An online survey
questionnaire was used utilizing the Marcial-Launer Digital
Trust in the Workplace Questionnaire. Results show that the
overall mean of the trust level as perceived by the respondents
is moderate (𝑥̅ = 3.01). Likewise, the continent, country's
innovation index, income level, internet satisfaction, job
position, company form, and company size were significant
predictors of trust level on data protection and privacy practices
in the workplace. It is concluded that employees are somehow
confident, which is affected by many variables, that their
workplaces protect their data and privacy. There is a need for
any organization to improve its data archiving practices to gain
trust among its employees.

Title Managing Screen Time in an Online Distance Learning
Brief Description of Paper
Majority in the higher education institutions in the Philippines
shifted to online distance learning. The delivery varies due to
Internet accessibility and connectivity. With compassion and
consideration, many universities opted to have more
asynchronous over synchronous time to deliver teaching and
learning. However, many students have expressed their
complaints about too much and overloaded activities to perform
in the virtual classroom. This phenomenon is contended to be a
teacher factor wherein teachers just provide too many activities
without considering the class duration.
This paper explores screen time management in an online
distance learning environment. Specifically, this paper presents
tips and strategies in conducting classroom activities that ensure
manageable screen time among learners. It demonstrates
sample classroom resources and effortless, appropriate, and
interactive exercises that are aligned with the intended learning
outcomes. This article also reviews the literature on the effects
of too much screen time on one’s health, as well as helpful and
practical tips on mitigating the adverse effects of too much
screen time.

Title
Students’ Reflection on Local Knowledge Integration in
Empowerment Technologies: The Case of Silliman University
Senior High School
Brief Description of Paper
Empowerment Technologies is an applied subject in Senior
High School. It is one of the courses that millennials like the
Grade 11 students are quite familiar with, given the fact that
they are exposed to online technology on their own. Local
knowledge is a concept that is experience-based, tested
through time, and adapted to the local environment and
culture, yet is still evolving as time passes or is close to
becoming extinct. These two entities are the total opposites,
with Empowerment Technologies defining modernity and the
future, while local knowledge embodying customs, traditions,
and a big chunk of what is in the past that is still presently
practiced. Could these two be even integrated?
This paper describes the integration process of local
knowledge in Empowerment Technologies. Specifically, it
aimed at describing the students’ reflection of the
implementation of the Local Knowledge-ICT Project, on their
thoughts, experience, local knowledge awareness and being
part of the movement, and their suggestions and
recommendations. It is concluded that the students perceived
the integration of local knowledge in Empowerment
Technologies a successful endeavor since it yielded a deeper
interest on local knowledge in them, at the same time using
what they know best—ICT— in preserving, disseminating,
and promoting local knowledge. They are one in
recommending its continuous implementation with the reason
that it was a whole new experience of being empowered after
going back to their roots.

The global health crisis has impacted various sectors, including the education sector. However, that is not a hindrance to stopping achieving our goals; online distance learning is a go-to method of pursuing education for teachers and learners. This paper aims to measure teachers' asynchronous engagement during online distance teaching. Specifically, it seeks to profile teachers' asynchronous engagement in a learning management system, the utilization of resources and activities, and the engagement challenges they encounter in learning practices. Profiling and utilization levels were measured using the LMS logs for the second semester school year 2020-2021 of a private university in the Philippines. Challenges were determined using a focus-group discussion among selected senior high school and tertiary teachers. The study reveals that the average number of visits per virtual classroom per visit is 621, and the longest time spent per college in a virtual class is 37 hours. "File" LMS resource is the most utilized, and "assignment" is the most utilized LMS activity. Further, technology unfamiliarity, pedagogical, disengagement, and preparation are the top challenges experienced by the teacher- respondents. It is concluded that the degree of

  • 7. Title Managing Screen Time in an Online Distance Learning Brief Description of Paper Majority in the higher education institutions in the Philippines shifted to online distance learning. The delivery varies due to Internet accessibility and connectivity. With compassion and consideration, many universities opted to have more asynchronous over synchronous time to deliver teaching and learning.
