PREPARE SECOND LINE OF DEFENCE AS
MANY COPS GETTING INFECTED: MHA
New Delhi: Concerned over scores of policemen
getting infected by COVID-19, the Centre has sug-
gested to states for preparing an effective second
line of defence to contain the spread of the deadly
virus. In a communication to all states and UTs, the
MHA said the police chiefs may consider the option
of ‘work from home’ for personnel not deployed on
the frontline, and wherever feasible. “To meet the
challenge of COVID-19, and to ensure sustainment
of control strategy for COVID- 19, police forces
need to prepare an effective second line of defence
to make up for the police personnel who may be
rendered ineffective due to COVID infection during
the pandemic,” the home ministry said.

ARMED FORCES
SALUTE CORONA
WARRIORS
rom the beginning of India did
not forget to acknowledge the role
of doctors, paramedics, police-
men, and sanitation workers, all
categorised as frontline warriors,
as they were attending to call of duty while
being vulnerable to the deadly virus them-
selves. On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s
call Indians beat metal utensils and clapped
in their honour and lit candles and earthen
lamps at a given hour.
Sunday’s show of gratitude to these war-
riors, however, was not only unique but also
spectacular as the three wings of the armed
forces showered flowers on hospitals, doctors,
and paramedics across the country. Indian
Navy’s warships shone bright with lights in
thanksgiving to those fighting the pandemic
while Coast Guard ships too were seen at 24
places.
It was an event not yet seen anywhere in
the world, although doctors and other health
workers have lost their lives in significant
numbers. The idea for today’s show was re-
vealed on Friday by the Chief of Defence
Staff General Bipin Rawat. He and chiefs of
the other services had announced the “ges-
ture of special gratitude” with the IAF fight-
ers and helicopters conducting fly-pasts all
over the country targeting designated Cov-
id-19 facilities and the “warriors” with flow-
ers and petals.
The IAF’s Sukhoi 30 MKIs, MiG 29s, Jag-
uars and Chetak helicopters started the show
with a fly-past over Rajpath and Delhi show-
ering flowers over different hospitals where
overwhelmed teams of doctors and paramed-
ics responded to the gesture by clapping and
capturing the show on their mobile phones.
From Thiruvananthpuram to Kutch and Di-
brugarh to Srinagar the IAF gave an aerial
salute to the hundreds of men and women
selflessly serving humanity. In some states,
Navy’s aircraft joined the effort, while the
army band performed at the Covid-19 quar-
antine centre at Narela.
The role of police during this pandemic
was also not forgotten and to pay them tribute
flower petals were showered at the Police War
Memorial. All the thanksgiving efforts fol-
lowed a stringent law passed by the Central
government and some states against assault
and harassment of the frontline warriors by
some shameless and irresponsible persons.
At one point, unable to take the humiliation
in return for the service they were rendering,
doctors were on the verge of staging protests.
Realising the disastrous impact it would have
on the country’s battle against Covid-19 the
Union Home Ministry passed the law to pro-
vide protection to those at the forefront.
“The nation stood together and showed re-
silience in dealing with the coronavirus pan-
demic. On behalf of armed forces we want to
thank all the corona warriors - doctors, nurs-
es, police, sanitation workers, home guards,
delivery boys, and media,” General Rawat
had said. Sunday’s gesture showed that it re-
ally has.
IN-DEPTH
F
he world is going through the
most challenging times in re-
corded history. For the first
time, the very existence of
the human race is in danger.
Half of the world is locked
down today. It’s totally un-
precedented. India, a country
of 130 crore people, has gone
into 37 days lockdown. UNIM-
AGINABLE!! But then, un-
precedented situations have
to be dealt with innovative
measures. The world which
was talking about seamless
trade and cultural exchanges
beyond man-made boundaries,
and the world, as one humani-
ty, is now lockeddown in indi-
vidual homes.
It is not the fatality or
deadliness of the disease but
the fear of the unknown
which has created much of
panic (wild, uncontrollable
fear) and anxiety. It’s the anx-
iety about fears of pandemic
spread, non-availability of au-
thentic cure, absence of vac-
cines to arrest the infection,
and scary pictures of unknown
mortality, which has created
the most dreaded fear amongst
all. People, confined to
homes are experiencing feel-
ings of helplessness or even
hopelessness as they watch
scary news coverage (24x7)
of the increasing spread of
illness and disease.
The pain of the lockdown is
clearly known to everybody.
PM Modi also agreed that eco-
nomically, it will take us back
by many years, yet with a heavy
heart; we have to do it since
there is no other choice. Fortu-
nately, today India has lead-
ership that is proactive in
approach, capable of taking
tough decisions in the na-
tional interest and above all,
has the perseverance to im-
plement their decisions over
130 crore Indians. It’s prob-
ably a miracle to enforce such
strict lockdown over largely,
undisciplined Indians. That’s
our strengths, as India -
“WHEN WE WANT TO DO
IT, WE CAN DO THE IMPOS-
SIBLE ALSO.”
God has unimaginable
methods of answering our
prayers. Some students prayed
“God, please give us holidays
to play the whole day.” Others
said –“Why not cancel exams
and get us promoted without
exams.” Overworked babus,
young entrepreneurs, and
globetrotting CEOs wished–“I
wish, I could get 20 days of
paid leave to enjoy with my
family.” Workers, house helps
and daily wagers also secretly
desired-“God, give me a break
but don’t cut my pay.”Oldpar-
ents asked for some more time
from their busy children, while
the least demanding housewife
simply prayed –“Give us some
family time.” God only
smiled and said “TATHASTU
(So be it)”. God created Corona
to fulfill all these wishes but
with a price to pay.
At God’s command, Corona
brings paradigm changes in
the lifestyle on planet earth.
Rich and Poor, Master and
Servants, Old and Young,
Daily Wagers, and CEOs are
all- confined to home with-
out any differentiation.
Some near and dear ones who
went out for a day or so have got
stuck there indefinitely. Chil-
dren now want KFC, McDon-
ald’s, Barbeque Nation, hang-
outs, and malls. Senior citizens
are missing out on pilgrimage,
temples, and prayer places.
The housewife is getting
double the husband and kids
with no maids to help. Add
to that the challenge of the
innovative menu of home-
made recipes with limited
supplies. It’s only a few days
into battle against corona, HE
(No work) and SHE (Over-
worked) are already taking out
their frustration and angst on
each other.
Routine life activities like
academics, healthcare, busi-
ness, travel, administration,
the legal system, social and
cultural events also can’t be
pended forever. Purely out of
frustration of watching every-
thing collapse, from windows
of locked down homes, people
will try to come out, albeit at a
heavy cost. Every fifth Indian
already suffers from an anxiety
disorder. Corona lockdown
will further enhance the symp-
toms of depression and anxie-
ty. As the world braces itself
for a long haul of lockdowns,
my worry is about resultant
psychological challenges
like stress-related syn-
drome, depression, marital
discord, domestic violence,
sibling rivalries, property
disputes, mob violence,
clashes over limited resourc-
es and suicides.
The biggest economic disas-
ter that will follow the corona
storm will add to the woes of
survivors, in form of challeng-
es like economic recession,
currency devaluation, bank-
ruptcy, lockouts, layoffs, in-
creasing unemployment,
and closure of fledgling new
enterprises, etc. Psychologi-
cal challenges emanating from
the economic side effects of
corona will be battled for many
years to come
I am an eternally positive
person. I’m certain that God
will not be so unkind to wipe
out it’s the best creation but
leave it with a little punish-
ment. How severe and long
will that be, is to be seen. The
world will never be the same
again. Certainly, with a calm
mind, we will tide over this
pandemic and then with
greater resilience, build it
again, brick by brick, into a
stronger and more prosper-
ous world.

stateof isolationhasturned
out to be a veritable Petri
dish of fabulist paranoia.
According to one of the
most popular conspiracy
theories, new Chinese-
made 5G networks are to
blame for the pandemic.
According to the theory’s
proponents, 5G equipment
is emitting radiation that
weakens the immune sys-
tem, or is even transmit-
ting the virus directly. In
the United Kingdom, pro-
ponents of this view claim
that the Huawei research
center responsible for the
company’s UK rollout is
located in Wuhan, where
the pandemic started.
As it happens, Wuhan is
also host to many laborato-
ries, and, according to re-
cent opinion polls, 23% of
Americans and 17% of the
French believe that the
SARS-CoV-2 virus was cre-
ated “intentionally” in one
of them. In France, the con-
spiratoriallensfocusedfirst
onaChineseP4(thehighest
biosafety level) lab that was
apparently set up with the
help of the French govern-
ment, before shifting to for-
mer French Minister of
Health Agnès Buzyn and
her husband, Yves Lévy,
both of whom are doctors
of Jewish descent. Indeed,
when conspiracy theories
are on the rise, anti-Semi-
tism is never far away. Not
surprisingly, the philan-
thropist George Soros has
alsobeenlinkedtothe“Chi-
nese lab” conspiracy.
Conspiracy theories of-
ten track existing political
divides, and are particu-
larly appealing to those on
the far right. In France,
National Rally followers in
the aforementioned poll
were twice as likely to be-
lieve that the virus was
made in a lab. And in the
UK, tying the virus to Hua-
wei has been convenient
for those within the gov-
erning Conservative Party
who believe the company is
a Trojan horse for the Chi-
nese government.
Conspiracy theories are
not inconsequential. In the
UK, a number of phone
lines (which are crucial for
the emergency services)
have been burned to the
ground, and the engineers
responsible for installing
them have been harassed
and accused of complicity
in “murdering people.”
Most of these theories
have spread through social
media platforms, which
have been flooded with
new users, including many
elderly people who have
been relying on digital
platforms to stay in touch
with family and friends.
Having grown up in a me-
dia environment populated
with far more professional
gatekeepers, older people
are more likely to share
fake news and online ru-
mors. And, compounding
the problem, people gener-
ally are more likely to be-
lieve messages they receive
from someone they trust.
Celebrities also can
cause problems. Among
those who shared a version
of the 5G conspiracy theo-
ry was the actor Woody
Harrelson, who has two
million Instagram follow-
ers. Before social media,
such misinformation
would have been caught by
an editor or questioned by
an interviewer. But now ce-
lebrities and public figures
can communicate their un-
filtered – and often unex-
amined – thoughts directly
to their fans and followers.

‘RISE IN CORONA CASES
EXPECTED TO STABILISE SOON’
New Delhi: The continu-
ous rise in the number of
people testing positive for
coronavirus is expected
to stabilise anytime soon,
NITI Aayog member VK
Paul said. He also said
the rationale behind the
government’s decision
to extend the lockdown
by two more weeks after
May 3 is to consolidate
the gains of the first and
second phase of restric-
tions. “The rationale
(behind extending the
lockdown till May 17) is
that the gains of lock-
down need to be consoli-
dated in the country...Real
goal of lockdown was
to suppress the chain of
transmission of the virus.
So, we will lose that, if we
abruptly end it,” the Niti
Aayog member said.

a few places with intense showers at isolated
places in the State.

guidelines to be followed whenever classroom
learning is resumed. Universities and schools
across the country have been closed since March
16 when the central government announced a
countrywide classroom shutdown as one of the
measures to contain the COVID-19 outbreak.

economic condition of
states has been adverse-

Answering to a ques-
tion related to mi-

that so far about 15
lakh workers and mi-
grants have registered
with state government.
“The State Govern-
ment is constantly
striving for the safe

about 1 lakh migrants
have come to Rajas-

gone to other states.
The governments of

Uttar Pradesh are not
ready for inter-state

ent. We are constantly
trying to get permis-
sion from them,” he
stressed.
Meanwhile, the Chief
Minister also empha-
sized that the risk of
corona has not de-
creased yet. “State Gov-
ernment has issued no-
tifications by imple-

The liquor shops
have been kept closed

The order further says
that apart from the con-

May, as of now. This might
sound like a long, boring
and stressful time, but it is
also the perfect opportuni-
ty to detox, or upgrade
your beauty routine to
make working from
home a transformative
period, by exploring
new makeup trends
and improve your sk-

Since the time

stuck at home does come
with a silver lining. You’ll
have more time on your
hands with nowhere to go
or people to meet, so there’s
been no better time than
now to catch up with your
beauty needs and practice
more self-care. With limit-
ed exposure to the sun, pol-
lution, dust, and grime,
this is the perfect time to
whip up some home reme-
dies and concoctions for
your skin even if you can
not go to the parlour.
We are going to share
with you the herbal beauty
tips which can be used for
daily beauty routine while
you are in Lockdown.
Make an avocado face
mask: Homemade avocado
face masks are amongst the
best natural face masks
that nourish your face with
non-greasy moisture and
revitalize the skin.
Apply Sunscreen: Sun-
screen should be applied
every day to exposed skin,
and not just if you are go-
ing to be in the sun.
Avoid Heat Hair Tools:
Another thing that you can
avoidforthenextfewweeks
during Lockdown is using
heated hair tools, such as
blow dryers, curling irons,
tongs, straighteners, etc,
and allow the hair to dry
naturally as you have suf-
ficient time with you.
Moisturise Your Hands:
We’re all washing our
hands much more often
(or we should be!) which
leads to a lot more hand
eczema cases.
Have a Luxury Bath: You
can try one of the follow-
ing bath additives; some of
these can remove fatigue,
while others replace oils,
or relieve itching. You can
make your bath luxurious
by adding these: honey,
vinegar, almond oil, and
much more, which have
great effects.
Tips: Your bath or show-
er water should not be too
cold or too hot. Give
yourbodyascrubwith
a loofah or sponge.

attention to areas
where the skin is hard,

THE SPECTACULAR NOWere is a lovely film about two
high school seniors who
look, speak and feel like real
18-year-old middle-American
human beings. Do you have
any idea how rare that is? They aren’t
crippled by irony. They aren’t speeded
up into cartoons. Their sex lives aren’t
insulted by scenes that treat them
cheaply. The story requires them to
make love, but it doesn’t insist we see
her tits. Sutter and Aimee are smart,
but they make dumb mistakes. They’re
more confident on the outside than on
the inside. They’re very serious about
life, although Sutter, the boy, makes an
effort to conceal that.
He lives with his mom. His dad isn’t
in the picture. Sutter has a little buzz
on most of the time, carrying a mon-
ogrammed flask to spike his fast-
food sodas. He drives while drink-
ing. One morning he’s sprawled on
the lawn of a house he’s never seen
before.
That’s the Meet Cute. He’s awak-
ened by Aimee (Shailene Woodley),
who says he’d never recognize her
from their school. They start talking,
and stroll through a wooded area
nearby. Bird song. Sun through the
leaves. It’s one of those time-outs li-
censed by youth, where there doesn’t
have to be a reason: They’re young,
they’re awake, he’s so hung over he
goes into one of those fuzzy trances
that run on fumes.
This is a conversation that will con-
tinue in one way or another for the
whole film. Emotionally it begins at
zero and arrives at 60, with some nega-
tive numbers along the way, but Sutter
wouldn’t know that; he wants her to
help with his geometry homework. Ge-
ometry, the most entertaining branch
of math, and the most advanced one I
ever mastered. Would you believe I was
online the other day, looking for the
sophomore geometry textbook I had at
Urbana High? I had this goofy notion
to get a protractor, a mechanical pencil
and a plastic triangle working through
some proofs. More fun than a cross-
word puzzle.
Sutter isn’t looking for a girlfriend.
Aimee has never had a boyfriend. Sut-
ter got really drunk after splitting up
with Cassidy (Brie Larson). She’s not
one of your bitch queens you so often
see as the Other Woman in teenager
movies. Can she tell there’s no future
with Sutter as long as he keeps on
drinking like this? His teacher (Andre
Royo) has the same thoughts. Sutter is
screwing up just when he should be
filling out an application for college.
Sutter and the teacher, who can’t be 10
years older than Sutter, have a serious
sit-down after class. The teacher asks
Sutter how he expects to get what he
deserves out of life. “Have you?” Sutter
asks him.
The movie’s first hour continues on
a, I dunno, realistic or naturalistic
tone. It makes no point of it. It just
looks at these two. They get to enjoy
hanging out, and although Sutter says
he has no intention of getting serious
with Aimee, damned if he doesn’t ask
her to the Prom. It’s not even that they
fall in love; they just intensely enjoy
one another’s company.
When they make love the scene is
handled perfectly by the director,
James Ponsoldt. Neither is a virgin,
neither is experienced. They perform
the task seriously and with care, Ai-
mee hands Sutter a condom and he
puts in on and enters her carefully and
they look solemnly into each other’s
eyes. None of that wild thrashing
about that embarrasses older actors,
who doth protest too much.
They reach that intent state where
they want to help each other. She
wants her mother to give her
more freedom. He says he lied
when he told her his dad was
a pilot. Actually, his dad
walked out. His older sister
has the phone number, now
revealed to him. Sutter makes
her promise to stand up to her
mom. Aimee makes him promise
to get the number from his sister
and call it.
Now comes the place the movie
was building toward all of his
time. Not a “climax,” nothing really
exciting, only an experience that helps
explain Sutter’s life up until now, and
points toward his future. He takes her
along to meet his dad (Kyle Chandler).
A lot of the meaning here is in long
shots. Sutter says the hell with it. In-
sults Aimee.
What an affecting film this is. It re-
spects its characters and doesn’t
use them for its own shabby pur-
poses. How deeply we care about
them. Miles Teller and Shailene
Woodley are so there. Being
young is a solemn business
when you really care about
someone. Teller has a touch of
John Cusack in his “Say Any-
thing” period. Woodley is
beautiful in a real person sort
if way, studying him with
concern,andthenthatwarm
smile. We have gone through
senior year with these two.
We have known them. We have
been them.

Editor: Jagdeesh Chandra, responsible for selection of news under the PRB Act ARMED FORCES SALUTE CORONA WARRIORS rom the beginning of India did not forget to acknowledge the role of doctors, paramedics, police- men, and sanitation workers, all categorised as frontline warriors, as they were attending to call of duty while being vulnerable to the deadly virus them- selves. On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call Indians beat metal utensils and clapped in their honour and lit candles and earthen lamps at a given hour. Sunday’s show of gratitude to these war- riors, however, was not only unique but also spectacular as the three wings of the armed forces showered flowers on hospitals, doctors, and paramedics across the country. Indian Navy’s warships shone bright with lights in thanksgiving to those fighting the pandemic while Coast Guard ships too were seen at 24 places. It was an event not yet seen anywhere in the world, although doctors and other health workers have lost their lives in significant numbers. The idea for today’s show was re- vealed on Friday by the Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat. He and chiefs of the other services had announced the “ges- ture of special gratitude” with the IAF fight- ers and helicopters conducting fly-pasts all over the country targeting designated Cov- id-19 facilities and the “warriors” with flow- ers and petals. The IAF’s Sukhoi 30 MKIs, MiG 29s, Jag- uars and Chetak helicopters started the show with a fly-past over Rajpath and Delhi show- ering flowers over different hospitals where overwhelmed teams of doctors and paramed- ics responded to the gesture by clapping and capturing the show on their mobile phones. From Thiruvananthpuram to Kutch and Di- brugarh to Srinagar the IAF gave an aerial salute to the hundreds of men and women selflessly serving humanity. In some states, Navy’s aircraft joined the effort, while the army band performed at the Covid-19 quar- antine centre at Narela. The role of police during this pandemic was also not forgotten and to pay them tribute flower petals were showered at the Police War Memorial. All the thanksgiving efforts fol- lowed a stringent law passed by the Central government and some states against assault and harassment of the frontline warriors by some shameless and irresponsible persons. At one point, unable to take the humiliation in return for the service they were rendering, doctors were on the verge of staging protests. Realising the disastrous impact it would have on the country’s battle against Covid-19 the Union Home Ministry passed the law to pro- vide protection to those at the forefront. “The nation stood together and showed re- silience in dealing with the coronavirus pan- demic. On behalf of armed forces we want to thank all the corona warriors - doctors, nurs- es, police, sanitation workers, home guards, delivery boys, and media,” General Rawat had said. Sunday’s gesture showed that it re- ally has. IN-DEPTH F he world is going through the most challenging times in re- corded history. For the first time, the very existence of the human race is in danger. Half of the world is locked down today. It’s totally un- precedented. India, a country of 130 crore people, has gone into 37 days lockdown. UNIM- AGINABLE!! But then, un- precedented situations have to be dealt with innovative measures. The world which was talking about seamless trade and cultural exchanges beyond man-made boundaries, and the world, as one humani- ty, is now lockeddown in indi- vidual homes. It is not the fatality or deadliness of the disease but the fear of the unknown which has created much of panic (wild, uncontrollable fear) and anxiety. It’s the anx- iety about fears of pandemic spread, non-availability of au- thentic cure, absence of vac- cines to arrest the infection, and scary pictures of unknown mortality, which has created the most dreaded fear amongst all. People, confined to homes are experiencing feel- ings of helplessness or even hopelessness as they watch scary news coverage (24x7) of the increasing spread of illness and disease. The pain of the lockdown is clearly known to everybody. PM Modi also agreed that eco- nomically, it will take us back by many years, yet with a heavy heart; we have to do it since there is no other choice. Fortu- nately, today India has lead- ership that is proactive in approach, capable of taking tough decisions in the na- tional interest and above all, has the perseverance to im- plement their decisions over 130 crore Indians. It’s prob- ably a miracle to enforce such strict lockdown over largely, undisciplined Indians. That’s our strengths, as India - “WHEN WE WANT TO DO IT, WE CAN DO THE IMPOS- SIBLE ALSO.” God has unimaginable methods of answering our prayers. Some students prayed “God, please give us holidays to play the whole day.” Others said –“Why not cancel exams and get us promoted without exams.” Overworked babus, young entrepreneurs, and globetrotting CEOs wished–“I wish, I could get 20 days of paid leave to enjoy with my family.” Workers, house helps and daily wagers also secretly desired-“God, give me a break but don’t cut my pay.”Oldpar- ents asked for some more time from their busy children, while the least demanding housewife simply prayed –“Give us some family time.” God only smiled and said “TATHASTU (So be it)”. God created Corona to fulfill all these wishes but with a price to pay. At God’s command, Corona brings paradigm changes in the lifestyle on planet earth. Rich and Poor, Master and Servants, Old and Young, Daily Wagers, and CEOs are all- confined to home with- out any differentiation. Some near and dear ones who went out for a day or so have got stuck there indefinitely. Chil- dren now want KFC, McDon- ald’s, Barbeque Nation, hang- outs, and malls. Senior citizens are missing out on pilgrimage, temples, and prayer places. The housewife is getting double the husband and kids with no maids to help. Add to that the challenge of the innovative menu of home- made recipes with limited supplies. It’s only a few days into battle against corona, HE (No work) and SHE (Over- worked) are already taking out their frustration and angst on each other. Routine life activities like academics, healthcare, busi- ness, travel, administration, the legal system, social and cultural events also can’t be pended forever. Purely out of frustration of watching every- thing collapse, from windows of locked down homes, people will try to come out, albeit at a heavy cost. Every fifth Indian already suffers from an anxiety disorder. Corona lockdown will further enhance the symp- toms of depression and anxie- ty. As the world braces itself for a long haul of lockdowns, my worry is about resultant psychological challenges like stress-related syn- drome, depression, marital discord, domestic violence, sibling rivalries, property disputes, mob violence, clashes over limited resourc- es and suicides. The biggest economic disas- ter that will follow the corona storm will add to the woes of survivors, in form of challeng- es like economic recession, currency devaluation, bank- ruptcy, lockouts, layoffs, in- creasing unemployment, and closure of fledgling new enterprises, etc. Psychologi- cal challenges emanating from the economic side effects of corona will be battled for many years to come I am an eternally positive person. I’m certain that God will not be so unkind to wipe out it’s the best creation but leave it with a little punish- ment. How severe and long will that be, is to be seen. The world will never be the same again. Certainly, with a calm mind, we will tide over this pandemic and then with greater resilience, build it again, brick by brick, into a stronger and more prosper- ous world. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL PSYCHO-SOCIAL CHALLENGES IN LOCKDOWN T The biggest economic disaster that will follow the corona storm will add to the woes of survivors, in form of challenges like economic recession, currency devaluation, bankruptcy, lockouts, layoffs, increasing unemployment, and closure of fledgling new enterprises, etc It is not the fatality or deadliness of the disease but the fear of the unknown which has created much of panic (wild, uncontrollable fear) and anxiety ver half of the world’s popula- tion is in self- confinement as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. And though the lockdown has slowed the spread of the coronavirus, it has acceler- atedtheprogressof another insidiousphenomenon:con- spiracytheories.Fearingfor one’s life, livelihood, and loved ones, all while in a stateof isolationhasturned out to be a veritable Petri dish of fabulist paranoia. According to one of the most popular conspiracy theories, new Chinese- made 5G networks are to blame for the pandemic. According to the theory’s proponents, 5G equipment is emitting radiation that weakens the immune sys- tem, or is even transmit- ting the virus directly. In the United Kingdom, pro- ponents of this view claim that the Huawei research center responsible for the company’s UK rollout is located in Wuhan, where the pandemic started. As it happens, Wuhan is also host to many laborato- ries, and, according to re- cent opinion polls, 23% of Americans and 17% of the French believe that the SARS-CoV-2 virus was cre- ated “intentionally” in one of them. In France, the con- spiratoriallensfocusedfirst onaChineseP4(thehighest biosafety level) lab that was apparently set up with the help of the French govern- ment, before shifting to for- mer French Minister of Health Agnès Buzyn and her husband, Yves Lévy, both of whom are doctors of Jewish descent. Indeed, when conspiracy theories are on the rise, anti-Semi- tism is never far away. Not surprisingly, the philan- thropist George Soros has alsobeenlinkedtothe“Chi- nese lab” conspiracy. Conspiracy theories of- ten track existing political divides, and are particu- larly appealing to those on the far right. In France, National Rally followers in the aforementioned poll were twice as likely to be- lieve that the virus was made in a lab. And in the UK, tying the virus to Hua- wei has been convenient for those within the gov- erning Conservative Party who believe the company is a Trojan horse for the Chi- nese government. Conspiracy theories are not inconsequential. In the UK, a number of phone lines (which are crucial for the emergency services) have been burned to the ground, and the engineers responsible for installing them have been harassed and accused of complicity in “murdering people.” Most of these theories have spread through social media platforms, which have been flooded with new users, including many elderly people who have been relying on digital platforms to stay in touch with family and friends. Having grown up in a me- dia environment populated with far more professional gatekeepers, older people are more likely to share fake news and online ru- mors. And, compounding the problem, people gener- ally are more likely to be- lieve messages they receive from someone they trust. Celebrities also can cause problems. Among those who shared a version of the 5G conspiracy theo- ry was the actor Woody Harrelson, who has two million Instagram follow- ers. Before social media, such misinformation would have been caught by an editor or questioned by an interviewer. But now ce- lebrities and public figures can communicate their un- filtered – and often unex- amined – thoughts directly to their fans and followers. But what people do not realise that these are individuals just like you or me who do get along amicably, albeit at certain times. Take this for an exam- ple. Two rival parties and their two leaders, both from the same com- munity.Toalaymanthis would mean that these two individuals are ‘sworn enemies’, howev- er read a little more to learn how cordial the duo are. That is not to say their ‘chat’ hasn’t raised any eyebrows. But that is reserved for later. For now, lets get on with the prologue. Let us introduce the two ‘contenders’ from the ‘martial’ Jat com- munity. In the orange- white-green ‘corner’ symbolized by a ‘hand’ is a royal scion, a firebrand politician and current Tourism Minister Vishvendra Singh while in the ‘saffron’ corner is leg- islator and state party chief Satish Poonia. If you are thinking there was a duel be- tween them, then you are highly mistaken. In fact, their ‘friendly chat’ on twitter is what this story is all about! Well, three days back, Singh posted a pic of let- teronhistwitteraccount that he wrote to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot regarding irregularities in RTDC and investiga- tion in the same. Singh tweeted that he has writ- ten to CM so that investi- gation could be carried out thereby establishing state government’s poli- cy of zero tolerance on corruption. This tweet was read by the saffron party’s state chief - Satish Poonia - who texted Singh saying, “Maha- raj Sahab, Pranam, aapka yeh andaaz!! Acha Hai!” (This style of yours!! is Good!) The erstwhile ‘Ma- haraja’ also recipro- cated saying, “Bhai Sahab Pranam. You are down to earth. All of us are aiming to establish high moral grounds with good work through the gov- ernment. We are striving for it.” Inter- estingly, even the BJP Rajasthan’s official twitter handle tagged both the men and said that both of them need to be lauded! But where there is power, there are those who keep a keen eye out for any ‘deviations’ from the normal course of ac- tion.Wordisthatformer Chief Minister Vasund- hara Raje has come to know of this ‘develop- ment’ and has started deducinganysignificant detail from this chat. But then economy started slowing down, the state government’s coffers had not paint- ed a pretty picture, there was no help from the centre and worst of all, Corona hap- pened which was the final nail in the coffin. Reeling under acute financial crisis, state government which wanted to part ways from liquor, is now looking at it as its greatest strength - so far as ‘re-arming’ the treasury is concerned when all other options are closed. After Cen- tre’s directions, Ra- jasthan’sfinancedepart- ment also issued order and guidelines to start liquor shops in state. First India had previ- ously hinted that liquor shops could be opened to provide some support to exchequer in lockdown 3.0. According to the order of the finance department, from May 4, liquor shops can be opened in green, or- ange and red zones from 10 am to 6 pm al- though the ban on op- erating hotel bars, resto bars and club bars continues. The liquor shops have been kept closed for 42 days which has resulted in a revenue loss of 125 crore ru- pees to the exchequer. The order further says that apart from the con- tainment and curfew ar- eas in red zone, liquor shops can be operated in otherareas. THE SPECTACULAR NOWere is a lovely film about two high school seniors who look, speak and feel like real 18-year-old middle-American human beings. Do you have any idea how rare that is? They aren’t crippled by irony. They aren’t speeded up into cartoons. Their sex lives aren’t insulted by scenes that treat them cheaply. The story requires them to make love, but it doesn’t insist we see her tits. Sutter and Aimee are smart, but they make dumb mistakes. They’re more confident on the outside than on the inside. They’re very serious about life, although Sutter, the boy, makes an effort to conceal that. He lives with his mom. His dad isn’t in the picture. Sutter has a little buzz on most of the time, carrying a mon- ogrammed flask to spike his fast- food sodas. He drives while drink- ing. One morning he’s sprawled on the lawn of a house he’s never seen before. That’s the Meet Cute. He’s awak- ened by Aimee (Shailene Woodley), who says he’d never recognize her from their school. They start talking, and stroll through a wooded area nearby. Bird song. Sun through the leaves. It’s one of those time-outs li- censed by youth, where there doesn’t have to be a reason: They’re young, they’re awake, he’s so hung over he goes into one of those fuzzy trances that run on fumes. This is a conversation that will con- tinue in one way or another for the whole film. Emotionally it begins at zero and arrives at 60, with some nega- tive numbers along the way, but Sutter wouldn’t know that; he wants her to help with his geometry homework. Ge- ometry, the most entertaining branch of math, and the most advanced one I ever mastered. Would you believe I was online the other day, looking for the sophomore geometry textbook I had at Urbana High? I had this goofy notion to get a protractor, a mechanical pencil and a plastic triangle working through some proofs. More fun than a cross- word puzzle. Sutter isn’t looking for a girlfriend. Aimee has never had a boyfriend. Sut- ter got really drunk after splitting up with Cassidy (Brie Larson). She’s not one of your bitch queens you so often see as the Other Woman in teenager movies. Can she tell there’s no future with Sutter as long as he keeps on drinking like this? His teacher (Andre Royo) has the same thoughts. Sutter is screwing up just when he should be filling out an application for college. Sutter and the teacher, who can’t be 10 years older than Sutter, have a serious sit-down after class. The teacher asks Sutter how he expects to get what he deserves out of life. “Have you?” Sutter asks him. The movie’s first hour continues on a, I dunno, realistic or naturalistic tone. It makes no point of it. It just looks at these two. They get to enjoy hanging out, and although Sutter says he has no intention of getting serious with Aimee, damned if he doesn’t ask her to the Prom. It’s not even that they fall in love; they just intensely enjoy one another’s company. When they make love the scene is handled perfectly by the director, James Ponsoldt. Neither is a virgin, neither is experienced. They perform the task seriously and with care, Ai- mee hands Sutter a condom and he puts in on and enters her carefully and they look solemnly into each other’s eyes. None of that wild thrashing about that embarrasses older actors, who doth protest too much. They reach that intent state where they want to help each other. She wants her mother to give her more freedom. He says he lied when he told her his dad was a pilot. Actually, his dad walked out. His older sister has the phone number, now revealed to him. Sutter makes her promise to stand up to her mom. Aimee makes him promise to get the number from his sister and call it. Now comes the place the movie was building toward all of his time. Not a “climax,” nothing really exciting, only an experience that helps explain Sutter’s life up until now, and points toward his future. He takes her along to meet his dad (Kyle Chandler). A lot of the meaning here is in long shots. Sutter says the hell with it. In- sults Aimee. What an affecting film this is. It re- spects its characters and doesn’t use them for its own shabby pur- poses. How deeply we care about them. Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley are so there. Being young is a solemn business when you really care about someone. Teller has a touch of John Cusack in his “Say Any- thing” period. Woodley is beautiful in a real person sort if way, studying him with concern, andthenthatwarm smile. We have gone through senior year with these two. We have known them. We have been them.
