4. SOCIAL FUNCTION
To state and ask about an obligation.

5. EXPRESSING OBLIGATION

6. STRONG OBLIGATION
In present, “must, need to and have to” are all
used to express strong obligation. All of them
have equal strength.
Example:
• My tooth is sore. I must go to the dentist.
• To travel, you have to carry a passport.

7. STRONG OBLIGATION
BE CAREFUL!
• My tooth is sore. I must not/mustn’t
go to the dentist. (PROHIBITION)
• To travel, you do not have to carry a
passport.

8. WEAK OBLIGATION
SHOULD
It is less strong than “must”. It is used to give advice, to say what’s the right or
wrong thing do.
Example:
– Our friend is unwell. We should visit him. (It is a nice thing to do.)
OUGHT TO
It means suggestion. You should do something but you don’t have to do it.
Example:
– You ought to prepare your bags the night before your flight. (It is a good
idea.)
SUPPOSED TO
It is something that you should do, but it is also okay if you choose not to do it.
Example:
– You are supposed to stay in the class today.

9. ASKING OF OBLIGATION
• Should I prepare the document?
• Do I have to talk to Joe?
• Must I talk to him?
• Am I supposed to call the doctor?

10. EXPRESSING OBLIGATION
• I must tell them the truth.
• You should answer his question.
• You are supposed to bring the paper.
• I have to send the report.
