ARCH 254- ARCHITECTURE DESIGN I1- BATH HOUSE
The Moscow, Idaho bathhouse is designed to foster relaxation, rejuvenation, and a renewed sense of spirit for clients of all ages. Provided
are lively public spaces as well as soothing private areas catering to a variety of needs. The building emerges from the earth creating a
strong connection to nature and its surroundings; the roof garden fosters a social atmosphere and offers a view of the town. There is a
sense of flow through circulation within the building created by the absence of interior doors. Curves and extruding walls create entries
from one space to the next. This design element duplicates a sense of nature’s natural flow throughout the structure and allows each and
every client to luxuriate in the overall environment.

CONCEPT STATEMENT
Dance is a commutative form of movement through the body
conveying emotion. There is rhythm, time, structure, and aesthetics much like that of a building. Walking through
the turnstone flats you will feel transformed back in time and pleasantly surprised by pops of modern design. Ele-
ments of history will remain with the sense of a contemporary atmosphere. Spending time here will feel reminis-
cent of a Sunday afternoon in the comfort of your own home; having freedom as an individual within a community
setting.

- To bring back the brick facade to tie it into Moscow’s main street historical facade.
- Bring in other elements from local businesses in Moscow.
- Create clear circulation that is accessible to everyone
- Provide private and public spaces
OBJECTIVES
GOALS
- As technique is to dance, the foundation of a building is paramount to it’s overall outcome as to whether it falls or shines.
- Dance can be enjoyed by all whether they are participants or spectators similar to that of a third space. Therefore I intend to provide both
prospect and refuge spaces within the wine bar.
- There are times when self reflection in a private environment is needed to recharge the spirit and boost creativity much like the solo perfor-
mance in a dance. The lounge with local art pieces provides a place for this.
- A choreographer will choreograph a dance to fit the demography of its dancers, much like the perfectly designed entrance to a building that
welcomes all no matter their limitations.
- Dance is fluid and ever changing with each new generation but it always brings with it an element from the past as in the restoration of this
historic building.

IDIA 302- COMMERCIAL ENVIRONMENTS- PALANTIR
When searching for a solution to increase employee productivity, create stronger employee teams, and interpersonal relationships, the
answer can be as simple as creating a new work environment. The organizational effectiveness of an office will translate into output and
can be achieved with an environment designed to support staff wants and needs. There is great value in understanding the psychology of
the work environment and implementing these ideas into the office design to boost interpersonal relations, as well as, individual productiv-
ity. The chaos that is so abundant in the area surrounding the Palantir building is carried through the inner workings of the office building
to keep personnel energy levels high and add an element of playfulness. With that said, there are times when it is necessary to escape the
chaos so this office design also offers quiet sanctuaries for important client meetings and introspective retreat. This combination makes for
an office space that will suit the needs of an eclectic group of employees and clients.

The addition of a fun and creatively designed space can encourage staff interact.
This is important, especially in the case of Palantir, do to the fact that a large part of
their job requires bringing ideas together to form solutions. Providing a playful set-
ting can offer employees a chance to be social and create stronger interpersonal
relationships which translates into strong team work with a faster work process and
favorable results.

I propose to create a theatrical focal point for the University campus as well as the greater Moscow community. This focal point, at the heart
of the campus, will be a transforming environment that allows the University of Idaho and Moscow community to collaborate and come
together in an artistic fashion. Inspiration is drawn from the University’s New Arboretum and its changing of seasons. This is expressed
through the materiality and different stage arrangements. Distinguishing the change in levels Spring welcomes you into the lobby, then
takes your eye up to Summer, and ends with the Fall. The design will feature natural materials, including a water feature conveying the
movement from one season to the next. Staying with the transitional theme, the stage will transform into three layouts starting with a small
circle like that of a “Bud”, then a slightly larger circle turning into “The Rose”, and finishing with the traditional layout representing the full
“Bloom”.
CONCEPT STATEMENT
The building I have chosen to use as my site location is the Physical Education Building on the Uni-
versity of Idaho's campus. It is located on the southern side of the main central building of campus
and attached to the south end of the Memorial Gym. It was built in 1969 and originally housed ath-
letic facilities, department offices, and faculty and grad offices. It is currently occupied by physical
education classes, dance classes, and department and staff offices.
For this project I took the large gym space located on the second level of the building and created a
large multi-functional theatre space in the heart of campus.
The University campus has limited offerings for theatre space, the HartungTheatre being the uni-
versities primary theatre. The Moscow area only offers small performance venues. The dance de-
partment does not have the benefit of a proper location for small annual shows such as Dance Off
Hands and senior concerts. My goal here is to provide the University with a transforming theatre to
provide appropriate space for these annual events.
PROJECT PROPOSAL
-To provide, as the creative heartbeat on campus, a multipur-
pose theatre that can accommodate a variety of events and
performances, including but not limited to, dance perfor-
mances, theatre performances, concerts, and presentations.
-To have clear circulation backstage for all performers.
-To create a pleasant atmosphere that brings out seasonal
elements from the University of Idaho's Arboretum .
