Ion Mihalache
1. Ion Mihalache
A poor peasant son, with exceptional intellectual capacity,
attended normal school and became a teacher.
In the First World War, Ion Mihalache was distinguished in
the battles for defending the homeland in the muscular
regiments, at the passes of the Dâmboviţa Valley, on the
fronts of Oituz and Mărăşeşti, being decorated with the
military order of war "Mihai Viteazul". He organized and
campaigned for the referendum, in which the population of
Bessarabia decided in 1918 to return to the motherland.
After the First World War, he founded the Peasant Party,
whose purpose was to carry out what King Ferdinand I of
Romania had promised to the soldiers' front in the speech
that Queen Maria had written with Barbu A. Ştirbey. In this
speech, the king promised land to the peasants and
animated them to heroically fight at Marasti, Marasesti and
Oituz.
