WIND MOVEMENT
DEFINITION:
• Wind is the movement of parcel of air within the earth’s atmosphere that always flows
towards lower pressure areas .
• Wind is described both its speed and direction.
• Direction of wind can be measured by wind wane.
• The speed of wind can be measured by anemometer.
WHAT CAUSESWIND?
• Wind is caused by air flowing from high pressure to low pressure .
• Earth is rotating however the air does flow directly from high pressure to low pressure
but it is deflected to the right in the northern hemisphere and left in southern
hemisphere.
TYPES OFWINDS:
• Local winds
• Global winds
LOCALWINDS:
• Local winds are created as a result of
scenery such as mountains vegetation
water and so on.That usually change
very often. They can move from mild to
extreme in few hours. Good example of
local winds are sea breeze and land
breeze.
LAND BREEZE:
• The movement of air toward the water
from land at night .
• At night land cools faster than ocean
water.
• Air over land becomes cooler and
moves over the ocean water.
SEA BREEZE:
• Movement of air from sea to land.
• During day-time cooler air from above the
water moves over land, forcing the warm less
dense air above land to rise
• The movement of air toward the water from
land at night .
• At night land cools faster than ocean water.
• Air over land becomes cooler and moves over
the ocean water.
GLOBAL WINDS:
• Large convection currents are formed because of temperature difference between poles
and equator.
• This create global wind system.
The sinking of cold, dense air and
the rising of warm, less dense air
do not explain everything about
wind.
• The flow of air caused by unequal heating of the Earth’s surface and the rotation of the Earth
(Coriolis Effect) creates distinct wind patterns on Earth’s surface
• These wind systems not only influence the weather, they also determine when and where ships
and planes travel most efficiently
TYPES OF GLOBAL WIND:
• Doldrums
• Horse latitude
• Trade winds
• Prevailing westerlies
• Polar easterlies
• Global wind systems determine
the major weather patterns for
the entire planet.
