Why do we test vocabulary?
 Words are considered as the building blocks of language.
 Teachers need to know how developed their students’
vocabulary is.
 Vocabulary belongs to the form of language.
 Vocabulary knowledge is strongly related to overall learning a
language.

Teachers should take into consideration the
following points when testing their vocabulary:
• It is difficult to estimate the size of a student’s
vocabulary.
• How many words does a student know.
• It is often difficult to decide which words should
be included in a test and which should not be.
• It is difficult to decide what is the criterion for
knowing the word.
• Certain tests do not give valid and reliable results.
