7. The House consists of 242 Republicans and 192 Democrats and
one seat is vacant. There are 29 Republican governors and 20
Democrats, and one independent.

representatives proportional to its population
In the 112th United States Congress, the Senate comprises 51
Democrats, two independents who caucus with the Democrats
and Republicans 47.
9. Senators have terms of six years, every 2 1/3 in 2 years, which
gives political stability. The representatives have terms of two
years. The two chambers may not be dissolved.
