1.1 Entrepreneurship meaning
Entrepreneurship is a French word meaning to undertake and focuses on a
business enterprise
In a broader sense, entrepreneurship refers to the means of stimulating
innovative and creative undertakings for a better business community.
What is entrepreneurship?
Entrepreneurship: refers to a system of operating a business in which
opportunities existing within the scope of a market are exploited.
Or
Entrepreneurship: is a process whereby an individual or group within a large
organization creates something new or different to maximize on the available
opportunities to that organization.
Entrepreneur: refers to a person who identify the business opportunities,
harnesses, and obtains the necessary resources to initiate it.
Business: is an economic activity where goods and services are exchanged for
one another or for money.
1.2 Differences between an entrepreneur and a businessman
1. A businessman runs an undertaking where as an entrepreneur runs a start up with an
original innovative product/idea.
2. Businessman sets up a business as a new entrant in an existing market where as an
entrepreneur comes up with a unique concept or idea to generate business.
3. Businessmen focus on short term profits where as entrepreneurs are visionary and they
set long term goals.
4. Businessmen are calculative while entrepreneurs are intuitive

1.5 Types of Entrepreneur
1. Craft entrepreneur; exploits and utilize personal skills to start a business.
2. Opportunistic Entrepreneur; act as a manager and with a view to expand the
business to the maximum.
3. Social Entrepreneur; recognizes a social problem and uses entrepreneurial
principles to organize, create and manage a venture to achieve social change.
4. Political Entrepreneur; seeking political support from political bodies in order to
promote, expand and profit from their own commercial ventures.
1.6 Functions of an entrepreneur
Bearing of uncertainties
Provision of risk capital
Management of the business enterprise
Identifying gaps in the market and turning those gaps to opportunities
Searching for business opportunities
Mobilization of resources
1.7 Qualities of a good entrepreneur
• Taking action in the face of significant obstacles
• Sees and acts on new business opportunities
• Doing things before being asked or forced to do
• Consultation of experts on business and technical advise
• Undertakes market research analysis and investigation
• Placing the highest priority to make the job completed
• Accepting all the challenges that may occur in making the job done
• Developing and using logical plans to meet goals
• Evaluate alternatives
• Strong belief in self and own abilities
• Convince people to buy the products
• Convince people on raising funds etc.
1.8 Roles of an entrepreneur in an enterprise

2. Entrepreneurial Culture
2.1 Concept of Entrepreneurial culture
Culture encompasses a wide variety of elements such as values, norms and artifacts. Theses
are dependent on language, social situation, religion, political philosophy, economic
philosophy, education, manners and customs.
An entrepreneurial culture is a system of shares values, beliefs and norms of members in
the entrepreneurial community
or
Entrepreneurial culture; refers to the way of embracing the concept of finding new
opportunities in business and gathering the necessary resources to fill the opportunity.
Elements of an entrepreneurial culture
• People are empowerment focused
• Value creation is true innovation and change
• Attention to basic/details
• Hands on management
• Doing the right thing
• Freedom to grow and to fail
• Commitment and personal responsibility
• Emphasis on the future

  • 5. 1.1 Entrepreneurship meaning Entrepreneurship is a French word meaning to undertake and focuses on a business enterprise In a broader sense, entrepreneurship refers to the means of stimulating innovative and creative undertakings for a better business community. What is entrepreneurship? Entrepreneurship: refers to a system of operating a business in which opportunities existing within the scope of a market are exploited. Or Entrepreneurship: is a process whereby an individual or group within a large organization creates something new or different to maximize on the available opportunities to that organization. Entrepreneur: refers to a person who identify the business opportunities, harnesses, and obtains the necessary resources to initiate it.

  • 7. 1.2 Differences between an entrepreneur and a businessman 1. A businessman runs an undertaking where as an entrepreneur runs a start up with an original innovative product/idea. 2. Businessman sets up a business as a new entrant in an existing market where as an entrepreneur comes up with a unique concept or idea to generate business. 3. Businessmen focus on short term profits where as entrepreneurs are visionary and they set long term goals. 4. Businessmen are calculative while entrepreneurs are intuitive
