Andhra Pradesh Governor E S L Narasimhan has invited
Telangana Rastra Samithi, TRS President K Chandrasekhara Rao
to form the 1st ever govt in Telangana that is coming into
existence on June 2nd.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been named the world's
most powerful woman for 4th year in a row by the Forbes in its
Most Powerful Women list.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation, DRDO has
successfully test-fired the Akash air defence missiles off the
Odisha coast.
American author and poet Maya Angelou passes away.
International hockey suffered a big setback today as the Sultan
of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah passed away in Kuala Lumpur. He
was 86. He started Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament in
1983. Under his stewardship, Malaysia hosted two hockey World
Cups -1975 and 2002 editions. In 1997, Sultan Azlan Shah was
elected as the president of the Asian Hockey Federation and he
held the post until his demise.
A set of four postal stamps & a special cover on Narendra Modi
has been issued by Postal Department of Posts in Bihar. The
stamps have been conceptualised by a philatelist Pradeep Jain.
The Department of Post issued it under 'My Stamp' series
coinciding with the oath taking ceremony of Modi. The set of
four stamps with a face value of 5 rupees each shows a smiling
Modi in four different poses, covered with petals of flowers like
Lily, Pansy and Dahlia.The cover depicts a smiling Modi
emerging from a fully blossomed lotus. The famous Navkar

Mantra of the Jains is printed on the cover, which is titled, The
Power of Namo.
Google has showcased a new self-driven car with no steering-
wheel, no brakes, no accelerator. Google plans to build over a
hundred prototype vehicles, and later this year, Google's safety
drivers will start testing early versions of these vehicles that
have manual controls.
An Indian Air Force (IAF) MIG plane has crashed at Marhama
Sangam on National Highway in Bijbehara of Anantnag district in
South Kashmir.

the prestigious Dag Hammarskjold medal to the eight Indian
soldiers, who lost their lives in peacekeeping operations in 2013.
They were awarded along with the other 98 UN peacekeepers
who lost their lives during service in 2013.
It was awarded at the annual celebration of International Day of
UN Peacekeepers on 29 May 2014. The ceremony was attended
by India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador
Asoke Kumar Mukerji and he accepted the medal on behalf of
the eight Indian soldiers.

The eight Indian soldiers are Lt Col Mahipal Singh; Lance Naik
Nand Kishore Joshi; Havildar Heera Lal; Naib Subedar Shiv
Kumar Pal and Havildar Bharat Sasmal; Subedar Dharmesh

About the post of National Security Advisor
The National Security Advisor (NSA) is the chief executive of the
National Security Council (NSC), and the primary advisor to the Prime
Minister of India on national and international security. It is the
National Security Advisor to whom intelligence agencies such as the
Research and Analysis Wing and Intelligence Bureau report, rather
than directly to the prime minister.
The post of NSA was constituted in November 1998 with the
appointment of Brajesh Mishra as the NSA for the then Prime
Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Later J.N. Singh, M.K. Narayanan
and Shivshankar Menon served as NSAs.

Qatar announced about its decision to abolish it controversial
sponsorship system for foreign workers. The sponsorship
system (Kafala system) will be replaced with a system based

on employment contracts as part of a package of labour
reforms.
About 90 percent of total population of Qatar is expatriate of
which around 1.3 millions are from Asian countries, mainly
from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Philippines.
Maximum number of migrant workers and residents of Qatar
are under the sponsorship system.
VRV Sriprasad was appointed as the new Managing Director
(MD) of Volvo Buses India by Volvo Bus Corporation. He will
succeed Manish Sahi, who took the position as the Director-
International business, Volvo Buses India.
Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan led the Indian delegation at
the 67th Cannes International Film Festival inaugurated in
Cannes, France. The Festival will be held from 14 to 25 May
2014.
The only Indian film in the festival is Titli by Love Sex Aur
Dhokha writer Kanu Behl. The film starred by Ranvir Shorey
and it is screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the
festival.

World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) was observed across the
world on 10 – 11 May 2014. The Theme of the WMBD 2014
was Destination Flyways: Migratory Birds and Tourism.
Moldova and Georgia agreed to sign European Union (EU)
Association Agreement on 27 June 2014. The President of the
European Council Herman Van Rompuy revealed this in
Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia.

The signing of the Association Agreement will help strengthen
the trade and political ties between the EU and the two
countries.
Report on Health for the world’s adolescents was released by
World Health Organisation (WHO). The report revealed that
depression is the predominant cause of illness and disability
for both boys and girls aged 10 to 19 years.
► According to the Report, the top 3 causes of adolescent
deaths globally are road traffic injuries, HIV/AIDS, and
suicide. Worldwide, an estimated 1.3 million adolescents died
in 2012.
Satish Adiga, professor in Clinical Embryology at Kasturba
Medical College (KMC), Manipal, and Dr. T.M.A. Pai
Endowment Chair in Manipal University, has been selected for
the Sir C.V. Raman State Award by the Karnataka government
for excellence in medical research.
With a view to recognise and honour scientific and
technological talent, the government has instituted this award
for young scientists and engineers who have made significant
contributions towards the development of the State in various
fields of science and technology.
Nearly a century after Rabindranath Tagore mesmerized his
audience at the Assembly Hall of Berlin’s Friedrich Wilhelm
University, (today’s Humboldt University), his speech has
been rediscovered in the University archive.
This speech was given on June 2, 1921. Tagore visited
Germany twice more — in 1926 and 1930 when he also met
Albert Einstein.
Tagore’s concept of ‘one world’ held his audience spell-
bound.
Although India was under a colonial power at the time of the
delivery of the speech, the great philosopher that Tagore was,
he spoke in a different tenor saying that the idea of freedom
to which India aspired, was based upon realisation of spiritual

unity.
Incidentally, the German consulate here, which has circulated
the sound clip, has described Tagore in glowing terms as a
great Indian poet, a novelist, philosopher and ecologist.

DURAND CUP, 2014
The 127th edition of Asia’s oldest cup competition, the Durand
Cup, might take place in Goa this year.
Durand Cup was first held in 1888 in Shimla but since 1940
Delhi has been the venue of this prestigious tournament.
However the interest in the competition has declined over the
years with top clubs rarely taking part and as a result the
organisers are considering Goa to be this year’s host.
After 500 years, Christopher Columbus's ship the Santa Maria
was claimed to be found by archaeological investigators led
by Barry Clifford. Christopher Columbus's flagship, the Santa
Maria, got wrecked in the Caribbean.
The vessel's long-lost remains was claimed to be lying at the
bottom of the sea off the north coast of Haiti.
Santa Maria was the largest of the three ships used by
Christopher Columbus in his first voyage. The ship was
constructed in 1460 and was struck in 1492.
The ship was used by Columbus in 1492 to found a direct
trade tour to India.
The European Court ruled that Google must amend some of its
search results at the request of ordinary people when they
show links to outdated, irrelevant information.

RBI EASES FORWARD FOREX CONTRACTS NORMS FOR
IMPORTERS – Providing importers with greater flexibility in
hedging, RBI has allowed them to book forward foreign
exchange contracts up to 50% of the eligible limit.
COOPERATIVE BANKS told not to give large loans to PSUs -
RBI says such lending goes against urban cooperative banks’
original mandate of funding small borrowers. The primary
function of cooperative banks is to help meet the credit needs
of society by providing loans and advances to small
borrowers, agriculture and small businesses, RBI said. This
meant that granting high value loans to PSUs diluted the
cooperative character of UCBs.

ACQUISITION OF 10% SHARES: RBI - Deposit- and non-
deposit taking non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) will
henceforth have to apply for Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
permission for any transaction that requires transfer of more
than 10% of shares in the companies, the central bank said in
a notification on Monday.
SALE OF BAD DEBT TO ARCS BOOST BANK RESULTS,
BUT WORRIES REMAIN - The fiscal fourth-quarter earnings

of Indian banks have indicated that bad loans at most banks
fell from the preceding three months, mainly with banks
selling bad debt to asset reconstruction companies (ARCs).

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has been appointed on the
Board of Governors of Philippines-based Asian Development
Bank (ADB).
"The Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has been appointed
as India's Governor on the Board of Governors of the Asian
Development Bank with effect from May 27," according to an
official statement.
The position was previously held by former Finance Minister
P Chidambaram. The Board of Governors is the ADB's highest
policy-making body and has one representative from each
member country.
The Manila-headquartered multi-lateral funding agency,
founded in 1966, aims to improve people's lives in Asia and
the Pacific. ADB approved USD 21.02 billion in financing in
2013.

Former Union minister Tapan Sikdar passes away
Former Union Minister and BJP leader Tapan Sikdar has
passed away. He was 69. He died in the All India Institute of
Medical Sciences, New Delhi due to respiratory problems.

Sikdar was a Minister of State in the NDA government headed
by Atal Behari Vajpayee.
He was elected to Lok Sabha twice from Dum Dum
constituency. He also unsuccessfully contested the last Lok
Sabha polls from the same constituency.

World No Tobacco Day 2014 is observed across the world on
May 31.
▶ The day is celebrated to raise awareness of the adverse
effects of tobacco use, which currently lead to 5.4 million
deaths worldwide every year.
▶ The day was instituted by WHO in 1987.
▶ The call for this year 'No Tobacco Day' is for all the
member states to raise taxes on tobacco and implement
relevant policies in order to deter tobacco consumption.

Nasa’s sun-observing IRIS (Interface Region Imaging
Spectrograph) spacecraft has captured its first stunning
close-up of a colossal coronal mass ejection(CME) erupting
from the sun.
The field of view for this imagery is about five times the
width of earth and about seven-and-half times its length, a
tremendous sheet of solar material can be seen erupting in a
latest video released by Nasa.
The view is unprecedented for IRIS which was launched in
June last year to observe the lowest levels of the sun’s
atmosphere with better resolution than ever before.
IRIS must commit to pointing at certain areas of the sun at
least a day in advance, so catching a CME in the act involves
some educated guesses and a little bit of luck.
