Putin is not trying to provoke NATO.
Putin's message to NATO is quite clear: let me do what I want to do in Ukraine. If you
try to interfere in the military field, then you will suffer the consequences.
What are the consequences that Putin is talking about?
Those of a direct war between Russia and NATO, with the obvious risk of nuclear
escalation that Putin is purposely dangling to keep the fear alive.
NATO does not want a war against Putin either. De facto, there will be no military
intervention in Ukraine. Support will be indirect by providing weapons and
equipment, as well as money.
This is an opposition that aims to avoid an escalation to a nuclear war, but it leaves
the Ukrainian people at the mercy of the Russian army that will sooner or later take
over in all likelihood.
This does not mean that Putin will have won because he will then have to face a
guerrilla war that could last for years and damage Russia's economy to the point that
it cannot recover.
Putin doesn't care and wants to go beyond that to complete his plan. The West is
betting on the collapse of the Russian economy so that Putin will stop this war since
money is the key to war.
We will see what happens in the future.
What are the people saying?
As far as I can gather, Putin knew from the start the western world would have their
hands tied where military intervention is concerned.
He has likely taken into account the severity of the sanctions and made preparations
to handle them.
This results in a situation where he can carry out his plan and the west can do little
to stop him.

Anthony, not so sure if Putin took into account the severity of the sanctions. It was a complete
surprise to many in the west. I am also surprised about what western companies are doing by
closing the shop in Russia.

In retrospect it was kind of obvious to those who will pay attention to the right places and to
those in the know. It's not the first time Russia has received sanctions for similar scenarios.
Crimea was annexed by Russia as far back as 2014 (for the record, that was taken positively by
Crimea. The west keeps painting it in a negative light) Russia had sanctions back then because
of that. It only makes sense the pattern will repeat itself. The special operation in Ukraine is
recieving the same consequences just at a bigger magnitude. To put my perspective another
way, I am just a layman in these subjects like many others out there but after the fact it appears
more apparent that these consequences would take place. Now imagine international
corporations, government bodies, the people who run them, those responsible for managing
them — I think it would be much wiser to conclude that to people like those; politicians,
presidents, CEOs, investors and whoever else is responsible for how they run it would be
virtually predictable that these sanctions would come. Want to know what else should be
predictable? The biggest assault ever launched by what we refer to as ‘Cancel Culture'. That's
what we are witnessing, and it's nothing we haven't already seen only now it's on a much bigger
scale: a multitude of western-based companies shutting shop in Russia and suspending all
trade. Russians from many walks of life around the world having their world's turned upside
down, or feeling they need to keep one eye open purely for being Russian… Speaking for
myself, now, there is one thing I did not predict: the scope of human cruelty. Meta has decided
to revise it's policy on hate speech essentially allowing hate speech if it's directed towards
Russia. The special operation in Ukraine is not the fault of Russia's general population, it's
civilians, yet they are the ones recieving the brunt of the consequences. The value of the ruble
has plummeted so low that even homeowners who lease out property cannot affordably spend
any time abroad. The average Russian is now stuck in Russia. The severity of these sanctions
and encouragement to companies and corporations to abandon Russia as a whole has been
done with the clear intention to put a stranglehold on Russia. The clear intention has been to
punish and bring hardship to as many Russians as possible as a consequence of the Ukraine
conflict. And lastly I like to call the “Ukraine invasion” for what it really is: a continuation of the
conflict that started nearly 8 years ago when the governing body of Ukraine decided to wage
war on Donbas. THAT is a war. Nobody seemed to care about what Ukraine was doing or
continued to do until Russia decided to launch a special operation. Ukraine wages a war for 8
years — the west does not care nor does it help to resolve things. Russia launches an operation
for nearly a mere two weeks and we have seen some of the worst sanctions sanctions in recent
times.
