East Asia STINT Trip Persuasive Speech Revision
I. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were
harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples,
“The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of
the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” These are Jesus’ words regarding
sharing his message with the rest of the world. I'm going to share with you guys about a
trip called STINT and why you should send me. In order to be a part of sending me you
should buy this shirt that I made. It’s a nice royal blue, has footprints going across the
bottom of the shirt and says “How beautiful are the feet...” across the top, from the verse
in Romans 10:14-15 that says “How then, can they call on the one they have not
believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And
how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach
unless they are sent? As it is written, “how beautiful are the feet of those who bring good
news!” This verse is speaking about missionaries bringing the message of God coming
to earth as Jesus in order to take on the price of our sin on the cross, and die in our
place, so that we will be saved. I have gone on a trip similar to this one, where we
did all of the same things, such as reaching out to the city. I did this in Santa
Monica, California on a trip called a Summer Project. I did this the summer of 2013
from June through August. All throughout project, we were poured into by staff
and students so that we may pour out to the community. Pouring into was done
through small groups, weekly meetings, and date nights with Jesus. These kept
us fresh in our faith as we became witnesses to the city of Santa Monica.
A. STINT stands for "Short Term International Internship”
2. 1. Through a one-year internship called STINT, thousands of Cru
students and recent graduates have taken the life-changing
message of Jesus’ love and forgiveness to students in places like
Russia, East Asia and the Middle East.
2. In order to go on STINT, I have to raise support to get there.
Raising support includes writing letters and making phone
calls to others regarding my mission and asking them to
partner financially with me. I raised support as a part of Santa
Monica Summer Project, and successfully raised over 2,000
dollars to cover the project’s expenses and my living
expenses. Raising support was one of the biggest challenges
that I got to meet for this mission trip. I met the challenge of
contacting a multitude of people and asking them to join my
mission in reaching Santa Monica with me. This challenge is
one that will help me in future endeavors as a part of a
company, I will have to learn to talk money to others,
something that was a part of raising support.
3. Raising support includes raising a set amount of money to support
my expenses while I’m there. Since I will be raising quite a bit of
money, in addition to raising support by writing letters and making
phone calls, I'll be selling these shirts for 25$ each.
B. I’ll be going to East Asia for this STINT
1. Due to Christianity being illegal in the location I’ll be placed, the
specific location of where I’ll be is classified. What we can know
from the information we’re given is that it will be somewhere in
East Asia.
3. 2. That’s why this project is called the East Asia STINT
3. The culture of East Asia is rich and varied. There, it is not legal to
talk about Christianity or to have churches and read bibles. That is
why we must go and continue the work of so many missionaries
before us to continue the work that they have started in that
country.
4. In East Asia, they are very centered around community.
Evangelism can be explosive. You can share with one person and
that person can bring ten others to faith. This is due to their culture
being communal, and one person wanting to include others in
their beliefs. In my experience as a Cru leader, I have been
required to speak to many different cultures, among them
were communal cultures. In communal cultures, people feel a
high, sometimes exaggerated, consciousness of family
identity and membership. I have had the experience of
working with people whose family beliefs weren’t the same as
Cru’s Christian beliefs. In a job as an HR representative, I
might have to deal with similar situations, where people in the
company have different cultures, sometimes different from
the company culture. I would then deal with this in the same
way that I dealt with it in my club Cru, by accepting them and
investing in them as I would any other employee.
C. Think about this personal story that happened at a UCLA project in East Asia.
1. Jeff and Chris, STINTers, met two students on campus. The
STINT on the project called them Michael and Donatello, but for
our purposes we will call them Mitch and Don.
4. 2. As often happens in East Asia, the conversation turned into
spiritual things. Through hand gestures, and clear simple
language, they were able to share the gospel with Mitch and Don.
3. In their second meeting, they led both of these guys to Christ.
4. In their third meeting, Mitch brought his brother to hear the gospel,
and he accepted Christ.
5. In their fourth meeting, Mitch and Don brought another student,
and it turns out they had already led him to faith!
6. Discipleship happens quickly in East Asia.
II. You should purchase my shirt and be a part of me being sent to STINT. Millions
still need to hear this life-changing message. Will you be a part of continuing to take the
gospel to every campus, and every nation? If so, purchase my shirt and help me get
there. This piece of work, East Asia STINT trip, is part of my communication
department’s Practice Objectives, especiallythe one regarding social
responsibility, which states: demonstrate social responsibility, ethical awareness,
and community engagement. “Your” dictionarydefines social responsibility as a
voluntarily assumed obligation toward the good of society at large as opposed to
the self alone. Both Santa Monica Summer Project and East Asia STINT Trip are
mission trips in which social responsibility plays a major role in its theme. At
project and on STINT, our motivation is bringing others to faith in God, something
that I perceive as bringing good to the society reached. This motivation is one that
I have had since my freshman year of college, up to now, my senior year. Having a
club like Cru to stand behind me and provide community for those I am reaching
is a great blessing. Community engagement is also a big part of it, as both trips
have outreaches that are aimed at reaching it’s city in which students go out into
the city and share the gospel with others in the city.
