Know
Yourself
Introduction: Self-knowledge is the starting point on the journey of self-development. Self-
knowledge gives you a window onto your potential. It indicates where your strengths lie, what
things you are naturally good at and how you might combine your natural gifts with the
opportunities around you. In this topic, we’ll look at 7 ways to find out just where your potential
lies.

1. SELF-
RESEARCH
There are many ways in which you can do
research on yourself. Here are some. Look in the
mirror and notice what you see. Journalise and
diarise. Write down a dialogue with parts of
yourself. If you have a fear, call it "Bill" and have
a chat with him. He might give you insights into
what really makes him happy and what makes
him afraid. Get feedback on your work and
behaviour from colleagues and friends. Study
your relationships. Draw your life history to date
and project it forward.

Body
Proportions
Right - Left: A strong left side suggests a passive defence; a strong right side an aggressive defence.
Head - Body: A large head shows an intellectual tendency; a large body shows an emotional tendency.
Front - Back: The front is the conscious you; the back the hidden, secretive you.
Limbs - Body: Short arms indicate a fear of contact; thin legs can mean you are not willing to take a stand.
Top - Bottom: A well-developed upper half shows an outgoing life; a well-developed bottom half, a more private
life.
Freepik
In the early twentieth century, psychiatrist Wilhelm Reich suggested that our
personalities were reflected in our body shapes. This is because the way we come to
terms with the world around us is the way we use body language. There are 5 basic
body proportions:

Cluster Graphs, Repertory Grids, and Life Charts
are 3 self-research techniques that will give you
an insight into what directions you should be
following in life. A Cluster Graph shows in a
cluster all the people who are important in your
life. By analysing these people, you can get a
reflection of your own interests. A Repertory
Grid records the way you handle key incidents in
your daily life and so indicates the things you do
with ease. A Life Chart draws a line of your life to
the present date charting your ups and downs.

Yin-Yang In Oriental philosophy, everything in the universe is considered to have two opposite and
complementary characteristics. Thus human beings are male and female; we have a right
and left side, back and front, up and down. Our lives are influenced by day and night, hot
and cold, water and fire, sun and moon. And so on. The two principles are known as Yin and
Yang.
Yin Qualities
Female; Yielding; Expanding;
Dispersing; Passive; Introvert;
Receptive; Defensive; Spiritual;
Psychological; Contemplative;
Solemn; Flexible; Universal;
Future; Negative; Sustaining;
Large; Hollow; Low
Yang Qualities
Male; Dominating; Contracting;
Concentrating; Active;
Extrovert; Penetrating;
Aggressive; Material; Physical;
Social; Cheerful; Inflexible;
Specific; Past; Positive; Killing;
Small; Solid; High
Everything associated with life has either a yin force or a yang force. While they are different, they are also part of
the same life force. When a yin element becomes too yin, it seeks balance by becoming yang and vice versa.
Perfect equilibrium is held to be non-dynamic and thus leads to stagnation. Everything is therefore in a state of
flux. We can use the Yin-Yang dichotomy to assess what we are like normally or under a given set of
circumstances and thus gain insight into our inner natures.

STRENGTHS
AND
WEAKNESSES
Dr Viktor Frankl said that you can divide the
things in your life into 4 categories. First, things
that are hard to learn and hard to do. These are
your weak areas, so make them a small part of
your life. Second, things that are hard to learn
and easy to do, like riding a bike. Third, things
that are easy to learn but hard to do. These are
activities that, although you know how to do
them, always present a challenge, like changing a
car wheel. Fourth, things that are easy to learn
and easy to do. These are where your natural
talents lie. You were made with strengths, so use them

How to DiscoverYour
Strengths
In "Play to Your Strengths", Donald Clifton and
Paula Nelson suggest five ways we can discover
our strengths.
1. Listen for yearnings. Yearnings are often
triggered when we see someone doing something
we'd like to do or feel we could do better.
2. Watch for satisfactions. When we get a glow of
satisfaction from doing a job, even though we
don't know why, it's likely to be a strength.
3. Watch for rapid learning. A strength is
characterised by initial rapid learning that
continues for a lifetime.
4. Be aware of moments of excellence.
5. Watch for total performance of excellence.
Total performance of excellence is a flow of
behaviour when there are no conscious steps in
evidence or in the mind of the performer.

4. FOLLOW
YOUR HEART
Steve Jobs said that the only thing that kept him
going when times were tough was his intuition
about the work that he was meant to do. In his
address to graduates at Stanford University in
2005, he told the students that they should
follow their intuition when making decisions
about their life's work and not listen to others.
“Have the courage to follow your heart and
intuition. They somehow already know what you
truly want to become. Everything else is
secondary."
Your heart knows your potential

Know Yourself Your True Passion
The secret to finding your strengths is to do
what you love.
"Sometimes life hits you in the head with a
brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the
only thing that kept me going was that I loved
what I did.
You’ve got to find what you love. Your work is
going to fill a large part of your life, and the only
way to be truly satisfied is to do what you
believe is great work.
And the only way to do great work is to love
what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep
looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the
heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like
any great relationship, it just gets better and
better as the years roll on. So keep looking until
you find it. Don’t settle.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living
someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma
- which is living with the results of other
people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’
opinions drown out your own inner voice.
And most important, have the courage to follow
your heart and intuition. They somehow already
know what you truly want to become.
Everything else is secondary.“

5. YOUR
PERSONALITY
Your personality is the set of characteristics that
don't change during your life but can develop in
healthy and positive directions. Your personality
characteristics also indicate what things you will
find come naturally to you. There are many
different kinds of personality typologies and
assessments, such as the Myers-Briggs model of
16 personality types and the Enneagram model
of 9 personality types. These personality models
can offer clues to the things you prefer to do in
your life, which are invariably the things you are
good at and where your natural strengths lie.
Your personality is unique to you

WhereAre You On Eysenck’s Personality Scales?
Eysenck's classification of temperaments is
the basis of many personality tests. Each of
the four predominant temperaments has a
range of characteristics similar to those of the
ancient Greek theory of humours.
Hans Eyenck developed his theory while
working at the Maudsley psychiatric hospital
in London during World War II. His job was to
assess patients and he developed a battery of
questions which he later applied to 700
soldiers recovering at the hospital.
He found that the soldiers' behaviour could be
represented on two scales:
introversion/extroversion; and
neuroticism/stability.
Eysenck found that, as a general rule,
extroverts tend to be carefree, impulsive and
optimistic, while introverts tend to be serious,
reliable, and pessimistic. Neurotics tend to be
anxious, overly emotional and hard to calm,
while stables are calm, unworried, and
unreactive.
1.
MELANCHOLIC
INTROVERT –NEUROTIC

sober; pessimistic;
reserved; unsociable;

2.

thoughtful; passive;
peaceful.
3.

4.
CHOLERIC

6. JOBS AND
PERSONALITIES
There is nothing more satisfying and enriching
than to find work that matches our strengths.
When we do this, our potential to grow and
succeed is unlimited. John Holland suggests that,
when you choose a career or job, it should
reflect the things you like to do. He says there
are 6 different types of job category. These are:
working with things; working with data; working
with others; serving others; working to innovate;
and being an investigator and analyser.
Always do a job that fits your personality

HowWouldYouAnswertheQuestion,“WhoAmI?”
Mumford and Salisbury asked a group of people to answer the question "Who am I?" twenty times. The work
role featured prominently in every response. It seems that our identity is wrapped up in the job we do.
American psychologist, Eleanor Maccoby, suggested there were five different job classifications:
Richard Bolles in "What Colour is your Parachute?"
says that people are attracted to working with:
things, data, ideas, knowledge or other people.
 Experts driven by mastery, control
and autonomy
 Defenders, driven by protection,
dignity and power
 Helpers, driven by caring,
sociability and relating
 Innovators, driven by creating,
competing, and glory
 Self-developers, driven by
balancing, mastery and play,
knowledge and fun.

7. VALUES
AND LIFE
CENTRES
In growing up, we develop a set of values that
become important to us. These values become
the source of our sense of self-worth, our
security, wisdom, and power. Stephen Covey says
that our set of values are like the bedrock to our
life and work. Some of the common centres are
focused on the following: our spouse, our family,
ourselves, pleasure, money, work, possessions,
friends, enemies, and institutions such as church
or organisation.

Some people are lucky enough to perceive their talents at an early age, perhaps at school or in the
family. Others come to them slowly after a process of wrong turns and failings. Others may not
come to self-knowledge until late in life when they suddenly see with blinding clarity where their
lives have been taking them. The important point to remember is that, at whatever point it comes,
it is always possible to turn self-knowledge into self-realisation.

Know Yourself Introduction: Self-knowledge is the starting point on the journey of self-development. Self- knowledge gives you a window onto your potential. It indicates where your strengths lie, what things you are naturally good at and how you might combine your natural gifts with the opportunities around you. In this topic, we’ll look at 7 ways to find out just where your potential lies.
  • 3. 3 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself 1. SELF- RESEARCH There are many ways in which you can do research on yourself. Here are some. Look in the mirror and notice what you see. Journalise and diarise. Write down a dialogue with parts of yourself. If you have a fear, call it "Bill" and have a chat with him. He might give you insights into what really makes him happy and what makes him afraid. Get feedback on your work and behaviour from colleagues and friends. Study your relationships. Draw your life history to date and project it forward. Look in the mirror and say what you see Flickr attribution: /jasonrphotography/2683916455/
  • 4. 4 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself Body Proportions Right - Left: A strong left side suggests a passive defence; a strong right side an aggressive defence. Top - Bottom: A well-developed upper half shows an outgoing life; a well-developed bottom half, a more private life. Freepik In the early twentieth century, psychiatrist Wilhelm Reich suggested that our personalities were reflected in our body shapes. This is because the way we come to terms with the world around us is the way we use body language. There are 5 basic body proportions:
  • 5. 5 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself 2. SELF- KNOWLEDGE Cluster Graphs, Repertory Grids, and Life Charts are 3 self-research techniques that will give you an insight into what directions you should be following in life. A Cluster Graph shows in a cluster all the people who are important in your life. By analysing these people, you can get a reflection of your own interests. A Repertory Grid records the way you handle key incidents in your daily life and so indicates the things you do with ease. A Life Chart draws a line of your life to the present date charting your ups and downs. The public self is your ego and the real self your potential Flickr attribution: /ananth/279721111/
  • 6. 6 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself Yin-Yang In Oriental philosophy, everything in the universe is considered to have two opposite and complementary characteristics. Thus human beings are male and female; we have a right and left side, back and front, up and down. Our lives are influenced by day and night, hot and cold, water and fire, sun and moon. And so on. The two principles are known as Yin and Yang. Yin Qualities Female; Yielding; Expanding; Dispersing; Passive; Introvert; Receptive; Defensive; Spiritual; Psychological; Contemplative; Solemn; Flexible; Universal; Future; Negative; Sustaining; Large; Hollow; Low Yang Qualities Male; Dominating; Contracting; Concentrating; Active; Extrovert; Penetrating; Aggressive; Material; Physical; Social; Cheerful; Inflexible; Specific; Past; Positive; Killing; Small; Solid; High Everything associated with life has either a yin force or a yang force. While they are different, they are also part of the same life force. When a yin element becomes too yin, it seeks balance by becoming yang and vice versa. Perfect equilibrium is held to be non-dynamic and thus leads to stagnation. Everything is therefore in a state of flux. We can use the Yin-Yang dichotomy to assess what we are like normally or under a given set of circumstances and thus gain insight into our inner natures.
  • 7. 7 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself 3. STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES Dr Viktor Frankl said that you can divide the things in your life into 4 categories. First, things that are hard to learn and hard to do. These are your weak areas, so make them a small part of your life. Second, things that are hard to learn and easy to do, like riding a bike. Third, things that are easy to learn but hard to do. These are activities that, although you know how to do them, always present a challenge, like changing a car wheel. Fourth, things that are easy to learn and easy to do. These are where your natural talents lie. You were made with strengths, so use them Flickr attribution: /soldiersmediacenter/7697206458/
  • 8. 8 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself How to DiscoverYour Strengths In "Play to Your Strengths", Donald Clifton and Paula Nelson suggest five ways we can discover our strengths. 1. Listen for yearnings. Yearnings are often triggered when we see someone doing something we'd like to do or feel we could do better. 2. Watch for satisfactions. When we get a glow of satisfaction from doing a job, even though we don't know why, it's likely to be a strength. 3. Watch for rapid learning. A strength is characterised by initial rapid learning that continues for a lifetime. 4. Be aware of moments of excellence. 5. Watch for total performance of excellence. Total performance of excellence is a flow of behaviour when there are no conscious steps in evidence or in the mind of the performer.
  • 9. 9 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself 4. FOLLOW YOUR HEART Steve Jobs said that the only thing that kept him going when times were tough was his intuition about the work that he was meant to do. In his address to graduates at Stanford University in 2005, he told the students that they should follow their intuition when making decisions about their life's work and not listen to others. “Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary." Your heart knows your potential Flickr attribution: /68397968@N07/13421502175/
  • 10. 10 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself Your True Passion The secret to finding your strengths is to do what you love. "Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle. Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.“
  • 11. 11 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself 5. YOUR PERSONALITY Your personality is the set of characteristics that don't change during your life but can develop in healthy and positive directions. Your personality characteristics also indicate what things you will find come naturally to you. There are many different kinds of personality typologies and assessments, such as the Myers-Briggs model of 16 personality types and the Enneagram model of 9 personality types. These personality models can offer clues to the things you prefer to do in your life, which are invariably the things you are good at and where your natural strengths lie. Your personality is unique to you Flickr attribution: /shovonakar/5131537519/
  • 12. 12 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself WhereAre You On Eysenck’s Personality Scales? Eysenck's classification of temperaments is the basis of many personality tests. Each of the four predominant temperaments has a range of characteristics similar to those of the ancient Greek theory of humours. Hans Eyenck developed his theory while working at the Maudsley psychiatric hospital in London during World War II. His job was to assess patients and he developed a battery of questions which he later applied to 700 soldiers recovering at the hospital. He found that the soldiers' behaviour could be represented on two scales: introversion/extroversion; and neuroticism/stability. Eysenck found that, as a general rule, extroverts tend to be carefree, impulsive and optimistic, while introverts tend to be serious, reliable, and pessimistic. Neurotics tend to be anxious, overly emotional and hard to calm, while stables are calm, unworried, and unreactive. 1. MELANCHOLIC INTROVERT –NEUROTIC moody; anxious; rigid; sober; pessimistic; reserved; unsociable; quiet. 2. PHLEGMATIC INTROVERT – STABLE calm; even; controlled; reliable; carefree; thoughtful; passive; peaceful. 3. SANGUINE EXTROVERT – STABLE easy-going; lively; in charge; outgoing; carefree; responsive; sociable; talkative; leadership 4. CHOLERIC EXTROVERT –NEUROTIC aggressive; touchy; changeable; restless; optimistic; impulsive; active; excitable.
  • 13. 13 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself 6. JOBS AND PERSONALITIES There is nothing more satisfying and enriching than to find work that matches our strengths. When we do this, our potential to grow and succeed is unlimited. John Holland suggests that, when you choose a career or job, it should reflect the things you like to do. He says there are 6 different types of job category. These are: working with things; working with data; working with others; serving others; working to innovate; and being an investigator and analyser. Always do a job that fits your personality Flickr attribution: /wefi_official/9276937578/
  • 14. 14 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself HowWouldYouAnswertheQuestion,“WhoAmI?” Mumford and Salisbury asked a group of people to answer the question "Who am I?" twenty times. The work role featured prominently in every response. It seems that our identity is wrapped up in the job we do. American psychologist, Eleanor Maccoby, suggested there were five different job classifications: Richard Bolles in "What Colour is your Parachute?" says that people are attracted to working with: things, data, ideas, knowledge or other people.  Experts driven by mastery, control and autonomy  Defenders, driven by protection, dignity and power  Helpers, driven by caring, sociability and relating  Innovators, driven by creating, competing, and glory  Self-developers, driven by balancing, mastery and play, knowledge and fun.
  • 15. 15 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself 7. VALUES AND LIFE CENTRES In growing up, we develop a set of values that become important to us. These values become the source of our sense of self-worth, our security, wisdom, and power. Stephen Covey says that our set of values are like the bedrock to our life and work. Some of the common centres are focused on the following: our spouse, our family, ourselves, pleasure, money, work, possessions, friends, enemies, and institutions such as church or organisation. • 16. 16 | MTL: The Professional Development Programme Know Yourself This has been a Slide Topic from Manage Train Learn AFinal Word Some people are lucky enough to perceive their talents at an early age, perhaps at school or in the family. Others come to them slowly after a process of wrong turns and failings. Others may not come to self-knowledge until late in life when they suddenly see with blinding clarity where their lives have been taking them. The important point to remember is that, at whatever point it comes, it is always possible to turn self-knowledge into self-realisation.
