Congratulations
Charles Chen
The Work, Learn and Grow
Employment Staff are pleased to
announce Charles Chen as January’s
Participant of the Month.
Charles Chen has already become
part of the family at Youth In Unity at
PS 110. He helps with maintaining
the daily operations of the
office. Charles assists with daily tasks
and directives of the Program
Assistant and Coordinator. When he
has completed his work, he takes
initiative to jump in and assist with
something else. If Charles hasn’t
completed a task when he comes in
the next day, he starts it straight
away. He always makes sure to ask
questions or clarify before and during
a project to ensure it is correct.
Students love to be around Charles as
he is friendly and makes himself
available to chat with them. Students
even want to be his assistant in the
office and lend a hand.
Welcome!
Henry Street Settlement
would like to welcome
Daniel Alvarado
Daniel Alvarado currently attends
The Urban Assembly Academy of
Government and Law. His plans for
the future include having a career in
law in regards to the practice of
criminal law. He appreciates the
flexibility in timing that Henry Street
Settlement so graciously grants him.
This makes it easier for Daniel to
manage work and school. His goal in
participating with Work, Learn and
Grow is to enhance his work
experiences and skills. We are excited
to be working with Daniel Alvarado!

Managing Your Time
Wisely
By Eona John
The person interviewed for this piece is Jessica Guzman,
Program Coordinator of the Work, Learn and Grow
Employment Program.
One thing you could never have back
is time. Have you ever heard the
idiom, “Time is money?” Be very
careful how you spend your time or
you could be losing out. The
following interview shows you why
managing your time wisely is so
important.
EONA JOHN: What is time
management?
JESSICA GUZMAN: I would say
time management is organizing and
dividing your time in the most
efficient way to make sure you
complete all the tasks assigned.
JOHN: How do you budget your
time?
GUZMAN: The first thing that I do
to budget my time is to make a list of
all the things I need to accomplish
and then prioritize them. If there is
something I can delegate to someone
else to do, or ask them for help on, I
do it so I can free up some more time
for myself.
JOHN: How do you decide where
and to what you allocate your time
to?
GUZMAN: Things that are highest
on my list of priorities, or with strict
deadlines, I complete first.
Everything else I either try
multitasking to complete them, or I
set up mini goals and deadlines for
myself to finish portions of them. For
example, if I have a report due on
Friday for the program, I might set up
little goals to complete a section of it
each day so that it is
ready Friday morning.
JOHN: So you’re saying that having
knowledge and awareness of one's
priorities play an essential role in
time management?
GUZMAN: Exactly! Knowing what
your priorities are plays a huge role in
how you will manage your time. If
you identify what your main priority
is, then your work will be completed
efficiently.
JOHN: Why is managing your time
so important?
GUZMAN: Managing my time is
very important so that I don't feel
overwhelmed by all the tasks in front
of me. It is very easy to become
overwhelmed and flustered if you are
looking at everything that needs to be
completed as a whole. Being able to
divide your time between different
assignments effectively allows you to
focus on a much smaller picture.
JOHN: Do you write down your
schedule for the day?
GUZMAN: I really try to do that! I
have a whiteboard in my office where
I write all the things that need to be
completed for the program that
day/week/month. I also use notes on
my iPhone and put things in
my calendar to remind myself of
upcoming assignments.
JOHN: All of WLG participants are
in school, what advice to them on
balancing work, school, and
extracurricular activities?
GUZMAN: It can be hard sometimes
trying to balance school, work, and
life in general. My biggest advice is
probably take some time either at
the beginning of the day or week and
list all the things you know you have
to do and prioritize them. Do what's
most important first instead of putting
it off. Sometimes seeing it written
down helps you commit to that goal.
