1. History of Swabi
History of Swabi: About thousand years ago Swabi was
under the rule of Hindu Raja. At that time in Ghazni
(Afghanistan) a
Muslim ruler Sabuktageen was ruling. He defeated Hindu
Raja and occupied this Area. After him, his son Mahmood
Ghazanvi became the king. In 1526 another Muslim king
Bahar established his rule here. The Mughals ruled here for
about 300 years. After Mughals Ahmad Shah Abdali ruled
here, after him his son part of Punjab. In 1901 Swabi become
a part of NWFP. After the creation of Pakistan it was a part of
Mardan District. But later on for the convenience of public
and development of region government declared it as a
separate district on1st July 1988.
Location: In the North of Swabi lies the District of Boner,
in South is District Nowshera and district Attock of Punjab.
In
East is River Indus. In West lies District Mardan. Physical
Features: Mountains In the Northern areas of Swabi there
are mountains. In the north there are two famous passes
Ambaila and
Mora. Plains In district Swabi most of the areas are plain.
Almost all they are consists of fertile fields in which many
crops
are sown. In the north of Swabi, there is a deserted area
named Qasim Mera. Rivers In Swabi River Indus flows from
North to South along the eastern boundary of Swabi. There
are also many
2. other small streams like Khwar, Naranji Khwar and Shaja
Nala.
Weather and Climate: There are four seasons in a year.
Summer In the area of Swabi summer starts from May and
remains till the end of August. June and July are very hot
months. Days are long nights are short. Schools remain close
in summer. Autumn starts from September and remains till
the end of October. In these months the hotness decreases.
Winter starts from November and remains till the mid of
March. December, January and February are cold
months. There is snow fall on northern mountains due to
which cold winds are blown. Spring From the month of
March the weather starts to change. In March and April there
is not cold nor hot and
weather is pleasant.
Sources of Irrigation: Rain and Snow These are natural
resources of irrigation. In Swabi there is enough rainfall. The
rain water is sufficient for
irrigation purposes. There is also snowfall on the mountains
from which small streams flows towards plains and are used
for irrigation. River and Canals Along the eastern boundary
of Swabi flows River Indus. A canal named Pehur canal near
Topi is taken out
from Indus. beside this canal another famous canal is Upper
Swat. Springs and Ponds Where canal water is not available
for irrigation spring and ponds are used for irrigation.
Wells and Tube Wells In most areas where canal water is
not available wells are dig for irrigation. The water is taken
out from
3. wells by means of "Rahat". In big villages tube wells are used
for irrigation. Natural Vegetation In our district Shisham,
Phulahi, Nuts, Chinar, Pear, Lemon, Orange and Mulberry etc.
are found. There are
also meadows and grasslands in many villages.
Live Stock: Rearing of animals is one of the oldest and
most common occupation of the people of Swabi, as most of
also
them live in villages and majority of them are farmers and
they have own a team of bullocks to help them in fields.
Sheep and goats are commonly reared in Swabi. Cows and
buffalo are also reared for getting milk, butter and ghee.
Beside these camels, donkeys and other pet animals are also
reared. Poultry forming is becoming popular in our district.
Minerals: In Swabi in northern mountains Marble
deposits have been found which is used in ceramics and
sanitary
ware, buildings like hotels etc. Lime stones are also found in
some mountains which are used as cement industry.
Industries: Swabi is progressing rapidly in industrial
sector. In Swabi many industries have been set up in the
industrial
area of Gadoon Amazai. In these factories textile, goods,
ghee, paper, medicines, foam, soap, various goods of iron
battery cells, chemicals, electronic appliances, watches,
rubber and petroleum goods and various items of plastics or
manufactured. Beside this there is tobacco, leather and flour
mills have also been set up in different parts of Swabi.
4. Cottage Industries: The people of Swabi are very skillful
and many people have set up small industries at their homes
in which
they prepare many articles of daily use, for examples!
Bullock carts, home furniture, shoes, agricultural
equipment's and ladies shawl and clothes are famous. In
some villages pottery goods are also made. Beside, this
women of Swabi also performed embroidery and needle
work such as Phulkari and Kamdani. Beside, this women of

liked by people and they earn money by selling these
handicrafts. Agriculture: Agriculture is the oldest
occupation of the people of Swabi. Most of the people of
Swabi are engaged with
this profession. Many crops are cultivated in Swabi.
Cereals: In Swabi many cereal crops are cultivated. It
includes Wheat, Rice, Maize, Grains, Barley, Pulses and
Oilseeds etc. Wheat and Barley are cultivated in October-
November and harvested in April and May. Rice and Maize
etc. are sown in July and August and harvested in October-
November. If there is sufficient rainfall the crops thrives well
and production is greater. Cash Crops: Beside food crops
many cash crops are also cultivated in Swabi which includes
sugarcane, tobacco, peanut,
cotton etc.
Vegetables and Fruits: In Swabi many vegetables are
produced both in summer and winter. In includes, potatoes,
tomatoes,
5. pumpkin,-onion, red chili, reddish, carrot, sweet pea,
cauliflower, lady finger, bringal, spinach and Saison etc.
Many types of fruits are also produced e.g. pears, oranges,
Kino, water melons, Apricot, pomegranate, guanagraps and
peach etc.
Meas of Transportation: The prosperity of an area largely
depends upon the efficiency of its means of transportation
because without
adequate means of transportation there is a little progress in
agriculture and industry. Being a plain area the main source
of transport in Swabi are roads. Different towns are
connected with roads. The main Roads are following...
Swabi to Mardan It is one of the longest roads of the
district. It starts from the west of Swabi city and passes
through Gohati,
Charbagh, Nawankali, and Shawa Adda. Kalu Khan, Adeena
and Ismaila and enters district Mardan very busy road.
Swabi to Jehangira It is also one of the longest roads. It starts
from the west of Swabi city and ten towards north it
passes through Punjpir pass, Shah Mansoor, Ambar, Lahor,
Mankai and Tordher and enters Jehangira where its meets
with National Highway which towards west goes to
Nowshera and Peshawar and towards east to Attock etc.
Swabi to Terbela Swabi is connect with Terbela by two
roads, one passes through Baja Bamkheil and then Topi and
other through Kunda, Zaida, Tandkoi, Marghuz, Kalabat,
Kotha and then Topi. Both the roads meet at Topi and
further go to Terbela. Swabi to Buner It starts from the
north of Swabi and passes through Saleem Khan, Tootalai
villages and enters
6. Dagar (Buner) Lahor to Adeena It starts from the
west of Lahore and passes through Yar Hussain. Yaqoobi and
Dagai and meet
Swabi Mardan road at Adeena. Beside these roads many
other small roads also connects different places of Swabi in
which Topi to Gandaf road is important. There are no
railway lines no air port and no sea-port in Swabi. Sources
of Communication: In Swabi main source of
communication are post-offices, telephone, telegrams, radio,
television and
newspaper. The Mobile Communication is also available. The
Mobilink, Al-ward, Telenor, Ufone and Paktel Services of
Mobile communication are available.
Administration: Deputy Commissioner is the Chief
Administrator of a district. He maintains law and order and
keeps
the records of properties. He has the juditionary records of
properties. He has the juditionary power and also called
Magistrate. The office and court of Deputy Commissioner are
at Swabi. There is a session court at Swabi. Police
Police maintain law and order and rules and regulations in
district.
Muncipal Committe Municipal Committee is responsible for
local administration and it performs the duties of cleanliness
to
provide clean water and care of roads and streets lights. It
also runs educational, medical and entertainment institution.
7. Educational Institution: Schools Many schools are set up
in different villages of Swabi in which thousands of children
get education. There
are primary, middle and high schools for boys and girls
almost in every village of District Swabi. Besides these many
private schools are also working in Swabi. Colleges In
Swabi there are degree colleges for boys at Kotha and
Lahore and a degree college for girls at
Maneri, Swabi. There are also higher secondary schools at
Topi and Marghuz. At Topi Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of
Science, Engineering and Technology is also working.
Hospitals: For the cure of different diseases a
District Headquarter Hospital is present at Swabi where x-
ray
and surgery facilities are available. Besides it there are
hospital at Topi, Zaida and Kalu Khan and almost every
village has small hospital, health centers and dispensaries.
There are also hospitals for cattle’s in different villages.
Banks: In Swabi almost every village has banks. The
Name are MCB, Allied Bank, Habib Bank etc
Some of the famous places of Swabi are given bellow.
The Fort of Hund:: This is an ancient fort situated on the
right bank of River Indus. It was built by Moria Emperors
before the birth of Crist. This was a gateway to India. All
conquerors like "Alexender The Great" crossed the River
Indus at this point.
Rani Ghat:: These are the ruins of Gandhara Civilization
and is situated on the top of a mountain. It is believed that
these are the ruins of a big university of that time.
8. Tarbela Dam:: The largest mud dam of the world.
Ghazi Barotha Dam:: Situated on River Indus for supplying
water to Barotha Hydle Power Generation Plant through a
long water channel.
Pehure High Level Canal:: The first of its kind in Asia &
second in the world. The whole canal has the same level and
the water level along with the water flow is controled
automatically.
Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering and
Technology:: One of the most advanced and top level
institution delivering the high quality education in science
and technology.
Kernal Sher Khan Cadit College:: This is the first Cadet
College of Swabi and is made in the memory and honour of
Kernal Sher Khan Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider).
The Industrial Etate of Gadoon Amazai:: An Industrial
Estate where hundreds of small scale production units of
different kinds are operating.
